Android posts 250% year-over-year growth with 850k daily activations

android_booth

It’s no secret that Android is the star of the party at Mobile World Congress this year. Most of us are caught up in all the news about new devices, but Google’s Andy Rubin has taken a little time out of his busy day to share some new statistics about the Android ecosystem. In the past twelve months, Android has grown more than 250% with more than 300 million Android devices activated around the globe, adding 850,000 new device activations on a daily basis (a 21.5% increase since December 21). All those new Android users also have access to 450,000 applications on the Android market, an increase of 300% from last year.

Google is celebrating the platform’s huge success at the Android booth at Mobile World Congress all week long, where conference attendees can view more than 100 devices which are on display on the Android conveyor belt or check out “app pods” to experience all the latest innovations that have come to the platform, including Android Beam.

Based on Android’s incredible growth rate, when do you think Andy Rubin will make the 1,000,000 daily activations announcement?

Start of April by the maths if the rate keeps up. Cannot believe where android is now compared to when I got my Hero 2 or so years ago…

No matter what Carrier your on or what Developer/Company you favor, you’ve got to be proud of Android.

Ya know… Apple is just being rolled over by a huge Android tsunami and while there was a brief reprieve when the 4s arrived to a starving Apple throng (16 months they waited for it) the wave continues to swamp them and there’s nothing they can do about it, even though they had a 2 year headstart. Android is just plain steam-rolling Apple. More to the point, the “Apple” websites have very little to talk about and most of them have resorted to Android articles, otherwise, there just would be anything to report. The wave continues….. on and on.

I can’t believe how Android has grown since I purchased my G1 a week or two after the release date. I remember not seeing anyone with an Android device in their hands to now seeing them everywhere.

Its amazing how far they have come.

My brain just shut down for about 10mins when I read that information… just.. wow…

I can’t comprehend those kinds of numbers.

It has been incredible to see the growth. I remember back when the Market on my G1 was sooooo limited. It’s great to see developers seeing Android as the giant opportunity that it is. Although, one thing I’m waiting for is a little more maturity in Android segmentation. It’s great to have all of the different iterations of Android out there because of the innovation but there is still room for improvement. The rapid growth has made it difficult but I think it will come with time. Still, I love me some Android!

i got my G1 on day one, in protest to apple.a few hours after i got it home, i was starting to regret my actions. looking at the wifes iphone 3g, Android 1.1v was not good.

However the day 1.5v (Cupcake) landed ive not looked back. it was a iffy first few months for me and Android, but i had faith, and im so glad us early pioneers did, as that first year Android could of gone either way.

if it didnt take off, we’d be stuck with an iphone 4, but cos of Androids innovation, event that wouldn’t be where it is today.

long live Android, and bring on my ‘One X’

I remember when a friend of mine laughed at me, he literally laughed at me in 2009 when I told him to give android a chance and it will be better than iOS and he said “haha, android is crap and it won’t go anywhere”…..he now owns a EVO 3D.
