T-Mobile G4X, first quad-core smartphone in the US with stock Android 4.0?

lg x3

If you were a T-Mobile customer disappointed with last night’s announcement of the Galaxy S Blaze 4G, then take note. Evan Blass of PocketNow is reporting that the device we have been calling the LG X3 could be coming to the US as the T-Mobile G4X. In global markets, the device will be known as the Optimus 4X.

Evan has a damn good track record and T-Mobile did launch the Optimus 2X as their G2x, so we believe this rumor is likely to come true. LG is expected to officially unveil this device in the coming days at Mobile World Congress.

Rumored specs of the LG Optimus 4X include:

  • Quad-core Tegra 3 processor
  • Android 4.0
  • 4.7-inch 1280×720 display
  • 8 megapixel rear camera, 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera
  • 16GB of expandable storage
  • Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, WiFi 802.11b/g/n
  • HSPA+ 21 Mbps support
  • 2,000mAh battery
  • Under 9mm thin

T-Mobile’s G-series has long been popular with the hardcore Android users because they ship with stock Android instead of the manufacturer’s custom skin. If the G4X follow that trend, it could be the first quad-core Android phone in the US with stock Android 4.0.

Even though the specs look impressive, we will have to wait and see how the device performs when released. Many customers, including myself, experienced all kinds of problems with the original T-Mobile G2x and LG was slow to address the issues. Hopefully they learned their lesson and this device will live up to the hype.

No way on earth I will get another LG device. The G2X was quite possibly the worst build quality of any electronic device I have ever owned.

    • Jorge Vieira

Really cause i liked it! Maybe just a bit too much Bezel tho.

      • http://androidandme.com Taylor Wimberly

I think the difference in opinion comes from when the device was purchased. The first batch available at launch had problems and then when they were later re-stocked it sounds like most the issues were fixed.

        • Defiantbeast

I experienced both sides of the G2X. I was also an early adopter of this phone (purchased soon after april release). By summer time it had been switched out 3-4 times. But by summer time it also became a rock solid device that i really enjoyed, and even after being upgraded to another phone i ended up going back to the G2X. I will say this after the Galaxy 1 update fiasco most people hated Samsung only for it to become the number one android maker. Lg might do the same.

        • bwaderunnah

Early adopters always get the pinch. That’s why I wait for the second or third batch before I dive in.

        • ray

Hardware issues were addressed. Locked bootloaders suck. Nvidia is anti open source and refuse to release HAL for the g2x. LG stands by nvidia. If we wanted closed source proprietary we would have purchased iPhones.

    • JayDubya

Hunter, I agree 1000% ! I went through four of those crash-o-matics before I gave up!

    • http://photoep.com/ Elliot Powell

I disagree, I find the build quality to be great especially compared to samsung’s plasticky feel, Where I did take issue was with the software and support. random crashes etc. the phone was great once i switched to CM7. the only thing i missed from the stock software was the camera app.

      • hadoob024

Yeah. I agree. Build quality is top-notch. Can’t believe people are complaining about the build-quality. Software and support is a whole other issue, but yeah, like you said, once I put on CM7 (I’m on MIUI now), the phone has been flawless!

  • sunrise

LG phones look so good on paper, but so many people complained about the G2x and its problems. Hopefully LG is paying attention to what people say online and doesn’t repeat history.

Those specs, and stock Android, this phone could be killer.

    • http://www.focuszonedevelopment.com Homncruse

The truth is, history does repeat itself, and people don’t care. Look at Samsung. How many times have they screwed their customers over with update fiascos? Yet they’ve not only had the last two Nexus phones, but people seem to swear by them every time a new Samsung Thing is released.

  • spazby

    Wow I like that…

  • Jorge Vieira

Now this is an LG phone i can get down with. hopefully it looks and performs good. I can’t wait for MWC coverage!

  • Alvin B.

As a G2X owner, I have strong reservations if this is another LG device. Not only is LG bad on the software front (“stock” android my ass), but my G2X has a severe case of death grip signal loss.

Plus that render has capacitive buttons. Not a good sign for a flagship ICS device.

    • http://www.anthonydomanico.com Anthony Domanico

Not a flagship, just a device running ics

    • Christopher Wueste

As much as LG has put me and every other G2X owner through with their lousy support and defective hardware, this better be a winner. I’m not getting it until it has had some time in the field. Maybe by then there will be a comparable phone by another manufacturer. Do not get lured in. LG is truly awful.

      • Defiantbeast

So was samsung at one point, and to some still is(Lack of updates)

  • cb2000a

Hopefully they have resolved the issues that keep them from selling more phones. If so they can be a contender.

  • http://youtube.com/user/jawckamoe Marcus

I’m glad LG is taking a step up to be the first manufacturer to release a phone with stock Android 4.0 and a quad core processor, but I really want to see how this device really performs. There were a lot of issues with the G2X, and now I’m wondering how LG will handle the G4X.

  • rantmo

As nice as that looks on paper, I’m not sure I’ll ever buy another LG phone after the ongoing difficulties of my G2x.

  • THIS IS FRAGMENTATION

Can you smell the fragmentation *sniff*

  • http://www.brandonvfletcher.com Brandon V. Fletcher

    G1>G2>G2X>…….>G4X?????

    • redraider133

Except lg never had a g1/g2 so it makes sense going from dual core(g2x) to quad core(g4x).

      • http://www.brandonvfletcher.com Brandon V. Fletcher

If thats the case then Tmobile really screwed up the G-series. At least Verizon stuck with the naming conventions of the OG Droid.

  • Jonathan

There is a common signature you see in the G2x XDA Forums: “NVIDIA NEVER AGAIN!”
As the owner of a G2x, I have struggled through the shoddy firmware, SODs and subsequent battery pulls, not to mention the mass exodus of developers away from the G2x as NVIDIA/LG have neglected the Tegra 2 development community. Despite all this, I enjoy my phone as most issues have been resolved by now. So what’s my take away?

LG/NVIDIA really blew it and it’s left a pretty deep scar. Is my next phone going to be made by either LG or NVIDIA? No way, but I hope that this phone does right so that I might consider them the next time around.

    • http://androidandme.com Taylor Wimberly

I don’t see how this was NVIDIA’s problem when LG made the phone. There are many other great Tegra devices out there that didn’t have the problems of the LG O2x/G2x. I blame LG.

      • redraider133

I think it was because nvidia wouldn’t release the drivers or some part needed for roms. LG had a part in it to but more nvidia in this case.

        • http://androidandme.com Taylor Wimberly

I don’t know the exact timeline of events, but I believe LG did release all the drivers that the dev community was asking for.

          • Defiantbeast

Yes but not the drivers for the tegra quad core processor that would allow overclocking and tweaking of the processor functions.

    • Kris E

I haven’t owned an LG phone in years, and I don’t plan on getting a phone built by them or Samsung again. They do not support the products they release, only the projected products. All the problems that the g2x had, (has) and it Is still bring sold with no support behind it. Too many bad phones to choose from. Make fewer phones, but make them awsome!

  • Vance

This, along with the update to Google Docs today, have me wearing all smiles. It’s good to be an Android.

  • kwills88

Those specs are beautiful, but that LG logo makes me go ehhhhhhhhhh.

    • xBIGREDDx

Don’t worry, in the US it will be a T-Mobile logo to make you go “ehhhhhhhhhh.”

Lg NEVER they are a JOKE. I have my stock device already and it’s BOSS..

    • squiddy20

Not even six months ago you wouldn’t shut up about how much of a “joke” or how “useless” Samsung (aka “Samsuck”) was. Now you’re singing the same stupid old song about a different company only because you’ve used just *one* of their phones for 3 or 4 *weeks*. Just plain sad…

      • Richard Yarrell

I would love to know what devices have you used lately???Let me answer that question for you… NONE…..I have has Evo4g, Evo3d, Lg Revolution, Galaxy S2 Skyrocket and also my current Galaxy Nexus. That means i had been sprint, at&t, and verizon customer. On this blog site your a CLOWN and an ASSHOLE plain and simple. You only come to this site to respond to my comments instead of the topic of discussion. You must be pretty BROKE because all you have ever done for 2yrs is talk about the same thing some rooted 2plus year old device that USELESS SAMSUNG MOMENT as well as that SHITTY 5yrs old laptop. Man times must be very hard for you I’ve spent more money and have had more experiences than you ever will have. Your a BROKE FOOL and a PITIFUL soul and the funny part is people who run this site egg you on knowing your an ass. Go get a job then go experience life learn what it feels like to live for a change. You are the sadest of people on this site and everyone knows it. You and Lg as well as apple are useless so now defend that you gumpy jobless broke bum…..Gslaxy Nex rules…

        • squiddy20

“I have has Evo4g, Evo3d, Lg Revolution, Galaxy S2 Skyrocket and also my current Galaxy Nexus” 1. You’ve owned 5 phones in less than 2 years and yet you still can’t use proper grammar. It’s sad that I, a 20 year old, can point this out. Aren’t people supposed to get wiser with age? 2. So what if you’ve owned that many phones? I’ve got friends that have owned double that in less amount of time than your two years. What, you think owning 5 phones makes you an “expert” on anything? Hahaha you are sadly mistaken Dick. If that were even remotely true, we’d ALL be experts at EVERYTHING. The fact that you’ve owned 2 of the aforementioned phones for no more than 4 weeks (Revolution and Skyrocket) does NOT make you an “expert” or even remotely knowledgable on the whole company. Fallacy of Composition right there. Look it up and be enlightened you pitiful excuse for a 50 year old man.
“You must be pretty BROKE because all you have ever done for 2yrs is talk about the same thing” Wow. You just missed the point of your own laughable attempt at an insult. My economic status has absolutely nothing to do with what I do or don’t talk about. The fact that you think it does only shows how screwed up in the head you really are.
“I’ve spent more money and have had more experiences than you ever will have.” Yeah, cause I’m soooo jealous that you’ve spent your money on 5 different cell phones, and yet you can’t even string a logical, well-thought sentence together to save your miserable life. Me? I’m putting my money towards better things, like a college education, a more comfortable life, and savings. Ya know, things that will ACTUALLY get you somewhere in life? How pathetic.
I can’t even address the rest of your “insults” because they’re so laughably stupid and so faulty in any sort of logic/reasoning. Such a sad, miserable little old man you are… Come back to me when/if you can ever rebut my claims without reverting to insults only a 3rd grader would use.

        • Chris

You would definitely know what a CLOWN and an ASSHOLE is. Would you not DICK?

Do you actually believe your own bullshit? Are you projecting and compensating again, or both?
“BOSS”?! Are you 13 and this is 1975?
ZOMG Richard. It’s 2012, you’re pushing 50. Go see the psychiatrist and the nice person will get you the meds that you need. Stop dressing your phones up and having little parties with them. Stop bashing your GNex and Evo3D together to see which one pimp-slaps the other.
Dude, you are seriously getting more and more deranged as time goes on. As one human being to another – go get help; you are one seriously mentally damaged individual. There are people out there that can help you. The Bowery Mission may have gotten a roof over your head, but they sure as hell didn’t do anything about your mental issues.

      • Richard Yarrell

Wow..You sound just as BROKE as your buddy squiddy20. What an ASS you really are pretty clearly your jobless probably walking around with some flip phone oh yeah your so knowlegable. Go fuck yourself how’s that loser.

        • Vance

Haha this conversation is hilarious. Is everyone who disagrees instantly broke? I must be the exception to your rule then.

          • Steam

See? He gets REALLY angry with me and throws out those ridiculous insults because he is:
            1) Projecting his own insecurities onto others (in this case, me)
            2) He knows that I am 100% right – it hit too close to home
            3) He literally can’t defend himself because the proof is right there in the link I posted. I didn’t write those ridiculous things, he did, I just pointed it out. So he resorts to the broke and jobless insults because, once again, he is projecting, as shown here:

            http://boweryapplications.org/Images/mmDocument/Red%20Door%20Jun2007.pdf
Richard is one seriously screwed up individual, and I’ve literally watched him get worse over the past year and a half, or so. You can’t cure stupid, but he really does need psychiatric help. Seriously.

        • Steam

If I am broke and jobless, you don’t have currently 1/100 of what you had when you were on the street, comparatively speaking. That dark basement really screwed with you, didn’t it? I noticed you haven’t brought it up lately.
If I’m broke and jobless, how would I even afford a flip phone and the bill? If I had a flip phone, how would I see your relentless rants and self-reassurance/looking for abuse from other people because of what happened to you in your mom’s basement? No, actually, I have a RAZR MAXX that I got through work, a GNex because I tweak ROMs, create themes, and other miscellaneous stuff and needed an ICS phone to work with, and that was, and is, the only one available. A Thunderbolt for my personal phone, and a Droid 2 to play games on, if you must know. What the hell is really wrong with you anyway? Smartphones are like some kind of massive status-symbol thing for you. I constantly see you telling other people that there devices are useless because it isn’t the same device that you have, just as you have always done. They are just phones, you aren’t a better person because you have the same phone
The smart thing to do, Richard (I know, I know, you can’t do anything remotely sensible), would to have not replied at all, or even better – kept yourself from posting about how “awesome”, “pimp-slapping”, “legendary”, and “BOSS” your current device/network is. I still laugh my ass off at “BOSS”, especially when you’re in one of your extra-special moods and you start throwing out a shit-ton of capitalized words in places that make absolutely no sense.
As I stated in another post:
Do you actually believe your own bullshit? Are you projecting and compensating again, or both?
“BOSS”?! Are you 13 and this is 1975?
ZOMG Richard. It’s 2012, you’re pushing 50. Go see the psychiatrist and the nice person will get you the meds that you need. Stop dressing your phones up and having little parties with them. Stop bashing your GNex and Evo3D together to see which one pimp-slaps the other.
Dude, you are seriously getting more and more deranged as time goes on. As one human being to another — go get help; you are one seriously mentally damaged individual. There are people out there that can help you. The Bowery Mission may have gotten a roof over your head, but they sure as hell didn’t do anything about your mental issues.
I stand by what I said. Get help.

        • squiddy20

How can one “sound” broke? To be broke means you have no money. Nowhere in his argument did he state anything about money, his economic status, or anything else pertaining to finances.
And just because you say he’s an “ass” can in no way link him to being “jobless”. Just because you say my Moment is “useless” does not make it so. And if you were “so knowledgable” about anything/everything Android, you’d know that there ARE flip phones powered by Android, making your “insult” moot. Good job. You now have the thought processes of a 3rd grader. Do yourself a favor and shut the fuck up. Or do you enjoy people laughing at your stupidity?

          • Steam

He does. As I’ve stated, he seeks both approval and abuse. The quotes of him were very close in time to when he switched to Verizon. Sprint probably kicked him off of the service because he embarrassed the hell out of them with his little “families” (“us in the Sprint family”, “the Evo family of devices”, posting videos of Dan Hesse with his little dictionary telling people what unlimited is, etc.). So he had to go to Verizon, but now that he has Verizon, they’re “boss” and “pimp slapping”. He has no friends, he thinks phones are status symbols. He has zero, ZERO clue about anything Android except thast whatever he has at the moment is “bosspimpslappinglegendary” (in caps, of course).
When confronted, it’s not that he won’t give a straight answer, he CAN’T give a straight answer because he doesn’t know (just loike the processors in the Evo3D – because they were in the E3D, they were more boss and pimp-slapping than the exact same chipset in another phone. I do believe he tries to read xda, but he doesn’t understand a word of it. Just a few weeks ago, he gimself stated that he was “studying hard” and “almost comfortable” with doing a force update on his GNex. A force update is as basic as it gets, it doesn’t get any simpler. Now, a person who is arm wrestling and losing against a force update is in no way going to start rooting and flashing custom ROMs and kernels, much less build his own ROMs or themes. He revels in his ignorance, wants approval, and needs to be abused, since that is what happened to him in a dark basement.
I’ll say it again: The Bowery Mission may have got him out of the rain, but they sure as hell didn’t get him the psychiatric help he so desperately needs.
I often wonder what this site was thinking ghost writing a blog for him. It was so obviously ghost-written, it was ridiculous. Oh he may have written a review, but what they put up wasn’t it.
            1) No ballistic caps
            2) Punctuation was used
            3) Apostrophes were in the proper places for the most part
            4) Almost every word was spelled correctly
            5) There was no frothing-at-the-mouth High Priest of the Church of Evo rants
            6) There was a shocking lack of “pimp-slapping”, “legendary”, “granddaddy of ______”, or “boss”
            7) I could keep going on, but I’ve already punched enough holes through that, that it makes Swiss cheese jealous.
He really does thrive on being ridiculed and belittled, why do you think he made a “reply” to you a few days ago in the general comments section when you haven’t even said anything up until that point? Why? Because he knew that you’d come along and belittle him, and he was starving for the abuse.

  • jamal adam

Look at Samsung, there first couple of Android smartphones were terrible especially the Samsung Behold 2 but eventually they learned their less and started to do things the right way and now they are at the top of the mountain. Hopefully, LG learned from their past mistakes and problems and has created an awesome smartphone. I guess only time will tell and until MWC we can’t judge their devices.

  • redraider133

Hopefully this won’t be plagued with the issues like the g2x was and hopefully lg and tmo have a little better support for this device.

  • WlfHart

If only someone other than LG was releasing a phone with those specs on T-Mobile in the near future…

  • Nathan D.

Maybe it wouldn’t be as buggy and hopefully they learned there lesson.

  • Christopher O

If this phone can withstand the abuse that my wife put her G2X though, then i will have no problem handling anything. My wife went swimming with her phone, TWICE! Both times all it took was a week in rice, and BOOM works fine. The second time resulted in some minor screen imperfections and a occasional reboot, but she had it submerged in water for +30Min. I’ll hold my breath on this till i find out about the root/cyan possibilities for this phone, but it might be a contender for me.

  • Hector Manzanarez

I’d like to see how the first adopters are treated by this phone before considering it. However, this and the HTC one-X are definitely on my watch list.

  • Zach

    With hardware buttons?

  • UMA Fan

    What happened to the G3x?

  • qwerty keyboard?

I don’t get why the G2x didn’t have a qwerty keyboard and now the ‘G4x’ won’t have one? The G1 and G2 had qwerty keyboards, so that implies the G series are qwerty keyboarded phones. There is a big market for qwerty keyboards and I think many would agree (even many of the non-qwerty users would probably agree). So what’s going on? Why is the G series no longer using qwerty keyboards? The manufacturer could have just made a qwerty version and non-qwerty version. I was disappointed when the G2x came out ‘cus of this and now I am losing hope. I am dying for a stock qwerty ICS phone. I am currently using the T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide which is doing the job but it’s not THE phone for me. I hope maybe androidandme.com can write about this and can shine some light on this topic.

    • redraider133

those were also made by htc not lg….. Maybe that has something to do with it….

    • http://www.focuszonedevelopment.com Homncruse

I’d guess the “x” in G2x and G4x stands for “eXcluding keyboard”.

  • Darla

Meh, i rather get the new megaseller iPhone 5 in october!

  • Max.Steel

The G-series should have QWERTY keyboards. This is not right.

  • BiGMERF

while I have my reservations about LG after owning a G2x for about a month before I wanted to drop it off the empire state building, This phone however has me interested. I will Def not be a day 1 adopter as I will wait for so of the community to give there feedback. But If i see positive responses I may give it a try. Not sure if I will go wit the Tmo version or international version (no tmo xtra garbage). If I get it at all. But I will say this , if this phone is an exclusive to tmo and support there new 84 mps network…. It can be a game changer for Magneta

  • droiddewd

This might be my next phone but since it is LG I will be watching reviews before I consider it. The specs like killer though so I hope it delivers.

  • Joe*D

Why can’t anything be simple. I’m staying on t-mobile and really want this phone to rock. The G2X thing makes me nervous, but I really want the power of a tegra 3 device. With the HTC ville coming to T-mobile I would say this will be their strongest phone for gaming, but the newly rumored snapdragon s4 in the ville is no slouch either. I love sense calendar but can do without the rest.

I’m pretty sure the g2x vanilla android was still a skin trying to look like vanilla android, which Cyanogen7 has been the strongest fix for in the long run.

  • CTown

With such a big screen, wouldn’t it have been wiser to wait for ICS and use on screen buttons to shave an inch or two in length? It’s not like LG being first with the G2X worked out (that phone was widely reported to be buggy)!

    • BiGMERF

as an early adopter, bugs are expected.. Its how they handled it after that made it ugly

  • Alex Pitts

So excited for this. I have a later run G2X (purchased Fall ’11) and I love mine. Love the tegra as well. Was hoping LG would update the phone, and I’m glad it’s coming. Fingers crossed the rumors are true!

  • 94wolfpack

LG burned me on a TV I bought about a year ago…
Not sure I would be willing to put my feet to the flame a second time.

  • n25philly

High end phone? On T-Mobile? IT’S A TRAP!

  • Derek

Pretty impressive phone. Good thing it comes with ICS because LG will never update it. Also, I will never buy a Tegra product again after the way NVidia has screwed us over by not releasing any of the source code or drivers. They only released binaries which are basically worthless.

  • Lenks

Even after the issues were fixed with the original G2X, these guys never updated it to ICS and the phone is perfectly capable. I’ll pass

    • Darkseider

FYI there will be an official ICS update for the O2X and G2X as per LG.

      • http://www.focuszonedevelopment.com Homncruse

Uh huh. I’ll believe it when I see it. We’ve heard that one for months, yet absolutely zero update in FOREVER.

  • Darkseider

Granted the G2X was a misfire with the stock OS but once you threw a custom ROM and kernel on it it became a beast and showed its’ true potential. I still have mine and I absolutely love it. PhoenixBlood v1.9 w/ a Faux kernel OC’d to 1.2 Ghz. Battery life, stability and performance are incredible. Soon to be rocking ICS as my daily driver once the ROMs hit beta. The G4X, assuming LG has paid attention, should be an absolutely phenomenal device. If the devs get behind this like they have the G2X LG has a repeat customer in me.

  • iHateiPhone

my experience with the G2X has me thinking “oh man….idk if i can trust LG again”, but these are some pretty good specs on a stock ICS phone (I think its stock ICS?), pretty tempting….

  • http://www.focuszonedevelopment.com Homncruse

Thanks but no thanks. Avoid this phone unless you like overhyped promises and subsequent disappointment with absolutely zero recognition or support of device issues. LG sticks their heads in the sand and ignores it all.

  • nizmo

I have g2x first one I had was crap had all the bugs. Second one was good no problems. But thanks to LG for not updating there first dual core phone to ics. At least we got the xda development without themthis phone would be crap. Now LG releases g4x ….at least it comes with ics. And pretty much the g4x wont get jellybean since they lack in software updates. Ill stick with HTC or Samsung this round. I big fuq you to LG
