Google to release Nexus S Android 4.0 update in the ‘next few weeks’

Word on the street is that Google will start rolling out the Android 4.0 update for the Nexus S and Nexus S 4G within the coming weeks. This new information comes from one of Engadget’s trusted sources which we assume has provided accurate information in the past.

As Dustin pointed out a few days ago, Google did push out an Android 4.0 update for the T-Mobile (i9020-T) Nexus S in December which was quickly pulled due to a number of bugs. We’re hoping that Google has finally been able to sort things out and will be able to deliver a stable update before the end of March.

Will the Android 4.0 update for the Nexus S and Nexus S 4G restore your trust in the Nexus brand or will you consider an OEM branded phone the next time you make a purchase?

    Would you rather have it five months ago with bugs or later without bugs? Sure, they have been dragging their feet but I have hope they can correct this.

    Wow! I thought it was the carriers dragging their feet here. So the Galaxy SII actually got the update before the nexus s. My world is crumbling

If this is true, this is good news. However, what is also true is that ICS was released in November.

The Nexus S should have had this in December. Shame on Google for getting to this point, though!

Here’s the fleece I’m laying before Google: If my brother’s Hebrew-adapted Orange Israel Galaxy S II gets ICS before my SIM-free Best Buy Nexus S, I’m waving bye-bye to Nexus.

  Well, I just got OTA’ed to ICS 4.0.4. My brother is still at 2.3.6 AFAIK. Looks like I’ll be staying with the Nexus line for a while longer. ;)

Makes me wonder how much google will support the Galaxy Nexus in the future. Without google support, I am much less likely to consider buying a Nexus in the future (though I’m sure that would make Verizon happy).

I’m excited, although Google should have made sure bugs were fixed before updating and then pulling it. They need to be on par with apples updates.

  Apple is also known to have buggy software updates, but the thing is:
  
  1. They get it fast – usually within days of announcement, you can update to the latest version (not experienced this personally – I have no iDevice – but websites and people claim so)
  
  2. They do support legacy hardware (iPhone 3GS is older than the Nexus One AFAIK, but look which officially received the most recent software)
  
  With Google having many of the industry’s best talent, this mess should not be happening to their Nexus line.
  
  Please Google, if this can reach you – focus on your most popular products – Android, YouTube, GMail, Maps, etc. and PLEASE dump Google+. It’s simply a huge waste of time and effort.

    I have an iPod touch 4th Generation and yes, updates are quick. It’s not “within days”, it’s usually as soon as the announced day hits.
    
    However, just because the iPhone 3GS got an update, it doesn’t mean it’s a WORKING update. Ask any 3GS user and they’ll tell you how the 5.x update sucks hard and Apple most likely won’t fix it.
    
    My phone is the Nexus S 4G, by the way. The iPod’s only for iOS-only games, no music on it at all.

      Really now? Here’s one happy 3GS user running IOS 5. Oops – 5.1, the update is installing as I speak…. Do Android users have any confidence in Google to support their devices down the road? i.e. – can they be certain that a year from now their phone will sport a moden OS?

I got the ics update on my nexus s and its working pretty fine for me …. I don’t know what all the fuss was about but I guess I had good luck with mine

I have a GNex right now, but if this fiasco happens when Jelly Bean drops I will NEVER buys a Nexus device again. I still can’t get over the FACT that the Samsung Galaxy S II is getting ICS before the Google Nexus S. To me there is no excuse for it, NONE what so ever!

Just install 4.0.3 manually if you can’t wait. It’s a good improvement over 2.3.6. My wife and I have it running since begin of january and we have no issues.

I rooted my Nexus S in December and running a custom ics ROM. Works like a charm! I don’t see why wait for the official build.

Today marks the 90th day since the Nexus S Android 4.0 original release was launched on December 16, 2011. A few more weeks should really give Nexus owners & Android fans/owners some serious concern. Don’t get it twisted. I’m cautiously optimistic about this update. But if there was a major zero day vulnerability or some other critical vulnerability? How long would it take for Google to investigate, patch, & push out an update? If it’s taken Google over 90 days to get a few bug fixes for Android 4.x done? This really raises some questions as to how good, how quick, or how dedicated the Android team is to getting fixes & major updates out the door in a timely manner. If Android competes head to head with the iPhone & iOS, over 90 days is absolutely UNACCEPTABLE!

I have to agree with other comments made on here. Google needs to refocus on its brands & quit being obsessed with Facebook. Focus on Android, Search, YouTube, GMail, Maps, etc. Get back to the original core mission of Google & quit being so corporate. I’ve been really disappointed in both Andy Rubin & Google CEO Larry Page for their lack of communication, accountability, & changing the core mission of Google.

My trust in the Android brand has been shaken by this. If I get Android 4.0, I will seriously have to wait until 2013 to see how the Galaxy Nexus is taken care of? Does it get the next version of Android in timely manner? Or is the Galaxy Nexus waiting months & months & months for the next version as well? It comes down to the so called “Don’t Be Evil” mantra of Google. Not communicating with your customers, not giving them timely update, & leaving customers in doubt in my opinion constitutes as being quite evil.

Just sayin…..

You people need to quit crying. If you didnt get the ota update install it manually. Google’s Nexus brand has one fuckin hiccup and you all are ready to jump ship. Shows how dedicated you are. I say see ya later bitches. Every other update that i can remember for the Nexus line has been smooth. Did you ever think that maybe its taking so long because they are going through it entirely to make sure its fully bug free? Don’t you think the developers got reamed for this. So quit your fuckin bitching, next you’ll be flinging your fists in the air and wailing like titty babies.

What frustrates me even more than the whole Nexus S ICS OTA release date issue with both Google and Samsung, is the lack of decency and respect I have
Seen/ read in countless forums, this one is no exception. We share a common concern therefore we should come together as a “community” to attract Google’s attention, then perhaps theywould respond in a timely and professional manner. Instead we launch verbal, vulgar attacks at Google, Samsung and then at each other? Well, that makes sense now doesn’t it!

I too own an i9020a Nexus S, stock 2.3.6 GB, no more pleased than any of you with the current pace of the ICS OTA. I chose NOT to root/ rom after much research, the odds are simply too high that something can/ will go sideways or worse, wind up with a bricked phone. For the record, I was an iPhone user for years, so I have the benefit of the experience of both OS’s.

In closing, choose your words wisely, act maturely, and stop attacking each other!

Don’t be fooled, there hasn’t been an official announcement from Google or Samsung, just a so called “source…” plus the term “few weeks” is pretty open ended. I feel that this may be an attempt to pacify us, the owners of Nexus S (all variants) as a result of the growing awareness over the net to our dissatisfaction over Google’s lack of ownership & accountability over the whole ICS OTA fiasco. All of which could have been avoided by simple, honest community updates!
