Family data plans coming soon to AT&T

att-store-630

AT&T has finalized plans to offer a shared data service to families, AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega told CNET yesterday. The plans are set to be unveiled later this year, though de la Vega was unwilling to provide details as to timing, plan details, or pricing. AT&T joins Verizon as the two companies considering rolling out a shared data plan as early as this summer.

Many wireless customers gripe at having to pay two separate data plans on family lines, especially when neither person comes remotely close to the standard 2-3GB limit most companies offer. Some would rather pay for the ability to share the same allotment of data and mitigate the need for costly separate plans. Of course, data plans tend to be where carriers make their money, so we’ll have to wait and see what AT&T come up with as final products for shared data services.

We should be learning more details of AT&T and Verizon shared data plans in coming weeks, perhaps as soon as a few days as the wireless industry settles into the big easy for the CTIA Spring 2012 show. Our own Taylor Wimberly is on hand in New Orleans, and we’ll be bringing you all the goods from the show floor as it emerges.

I think if the price is right and they offer a decent chunk of gb this could save people some money. Will be interesting to see how they choose price and gb

I think so too. I can totally see a shared data plan making a ton of sense, and (hopefully) saving customers some cash in the long run.

      • @jayefef

But do you think they’re interested in saving people money or just making it for themselves?

        • redraider133

Even if they keep similar prices most likely you could get two data plans( presumably) for the price of one or one and a half data plans now. I know personally if it would be cheaper than having 2 separate data plans at $30 each I would look into it, especially since I am not a heavy data user.

Too bad AT&T is not in the business of saving people money.

Seriously? He asked you a simple question, that only needed a simple answer, no longer than a sentence really, and you give him a whole paragraph (or 2). And you wonder why people hate and constantly downvote you? Good god you are oblivious.
“I don’t care what forum you go on throughout android world their is always some with some king of overall complaint regarding dBm or lack of signal that the device recieves” …Because different phone manufacturers put different radios in their different phones. What a concept. This isn’t Apple and the iPhone Richard. Want roughly the same signal across all devices? Go get a f*cking iPhone and shut the hell up until you actually know what you’re talking about.
“It’s clear that Verizon does it’s overall best to promote their Razr and Razr Maxx devices” Glad you’re finally catching up to the way the “real world” works. *Flagship* phones receiving most, if not all, of the attention while your Galaxy Nexus, which isn’t a flagship phone, doesn’t? Color me surprised that you didn’t figure that out 2 years ago with your Evo 4G. Didn’t see you complaining then.
“Everyone else’s devices have issues back and forth” No dumbass, ALL phones have problems, bugs, and errors. It’s impossible to work out every single bug and every single error because they always crop up. And you tell me I need to “be more intelligent in this space”. Ha. Look in a mirror and say that Dick. You clearly have no clue about anything.
“Verizon is OVERRATED and OVERCHARGES for all their devices plain and simple.” …And yet, you’re the moron who signed a contract with Verizon. Need I really say more?

        • redraider133

yeah dick Verizon builds all the devices so they can choose to put better radios in certain devices…. Oh wait they don’t make the phones, it’s the other companies using different radios hence the different signal strength. You really are a fool.

    • squiddy20

It’s actually hilariously sad, but you have only yourself to blame Richard. For almost 2 whole years, you wouldn’t shut about how “shitty” Verizon was, or how all other carriers were “pissing on” Verizon, or how Verizon “sucks rotten eggs”, and other childish, antiquated sayings ad nauseum. Then in November you signed a contract with the very company you so despised? Really!? I mean c’mon! You must be incredibly f*cked up in the head to do something like that! And all of that for a “pimp slapping” Galaxy Nexus that if you’d waited patiently on Sprint for another 5 or so months, could’ve been yours. Again, you really have only yourself to blame Dick.

You guys are both the same person, aren’t you?

          • squiddy20

No, we’re definitely not. If you notice, I spell everything correctly and use (mostly) proper punctuation/grammar, while Richard doesn’t even know how to spell “dumb” (he spells it “dum”). Not to mention the fact that I usually break my comments into sections (such as the 1., 2., 3…. outline) while Richard makes one giant, unorganized, comment with no breaks or logical flow. Then there’s also the fact that, if I were Richard, I would be insulting everyone because they don’t have a “pimp slapping” Galaxy Nexus, and would think it’s “BOSS”.
            Yeah, we’re *definitely* the same person… /s

          • Bpear96

I’ve actually thought the same.. I mean if you notice have you every seen squiddy write on here, besides responding to richard? And its not just this site, its many android sites, you see richard write something, then squiddy respond not to long. Maybe Richard is trying to be an insane troll with 2 identity’s :P.. But then again who knows.

          1. Ummm Spring break was over several months ago…. Try looking at a calendar once in awhile.
          2. “Why they PLUS your garbage here in these forums is truly beyound me” Yep, just it was “beyond you” as to the reason you got booted from Phandroid *4* times. I remember each time you came back, you were a saying such BS as “You can’t get rid of me. Why do you want to get rid of me?” You are utterly clueless Dick. I’ll let you in on a little secret, maybe you if you stopped acting like a bratty little child with “my device is better than yours” and all your adolescent crap, maybe people wouldn’t downvote you so much. Ever think about that?
          3. Also incase you haven’t noticed, I don’t “attack people left and right”, just you. Because you’re the only moron on here stupid enough to believe the Galaxy Nexus is/was Verizon’s “flagship phone”. You’re the only one on here who believes people’s *opinions* can be right or wrong. You’re the only one on here who, for 2 years stated how “shitty” Verizon was, all over the Internet, and now that they aren’t updating your “pimp slapping” Galaxy Nexus up 0.0.2 releases, you throw a bitch-fit exactly like a spoiled child. So tell me, who’s the “grown up” here?
4.”You can’t stretch a budget any further than you have that’s for sure…” Well, seeing how you know relatively nothing substantive about me, your “insults” (or at least your pitiful attempts at them) means absolutely nothing and are completely unfounded. Have fun with those “useless” insults there Dicky.

I assume you were referring to yourself? You certainly aren’t mentally grown-up. You have never, EVER answered a question someone posed. Instead, you resort to what you think are insults, or simply say something different. Do try to grow up befiore you die.

  • joecyclone

Will be very interested. Have data plans on 3, soon to be 4 devices at various levels. Would be good for the devices on the lower limits be able to take advantage of the unused bits on the higher limit device.

  • rfgenerator

I’d be willing to bet this will be configured to actually cost you more money. “A Fee & Fee” isn’t in business to do anything that is consumer friendly.

    • kazahani

I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt on this one. They already know that Verizon is working on the same thing, so maybe they are just trying to beat Big Red to the punch. If this catches on, they could get some new subscribers by being first to market with it.

    • http://www.anthonydomanico.com Anthony Domanico

Taylor’s at CTIA this week. For what it’s worth, I’m sorry I’m not him. lol

Sorry, I honestly don’t know how that got posted. :|

But def excited to see what treats Taylor brings us from CTIA. Give ‘em hell, Taylor!

It’ll probably be 8GB of shared data for $60. and 10GB for $80

    • uknowme

That wouldn’t be bad but I am leaning towards them charging around $40 for 4GB.

      • redraider133

See now $40 for 4 gb isn’t to bad and that would save people $20+ dollars a month. I have a feeling at&t will make it lower than that though, although with lte the lowest cap should be 4gb but we shall see.

  • HackNet

At&t will never make decisions that will cost the company money. They always vote in favor of the machine(At&t). So, with that said, I think this “Family Data Plan” is a gimmick feature, designed suck more money out of our pockets.

Then again, maybe after many years of ripping their customers off, A very wealthy At&t is finally reborn as a philanthropist carrier who has come to terms with reality and has decided to help the needy(the 99%).

    …Nah, I don’t think so.

  • JIW

I’m willing to bet that whatever plan they come up with for families will only make financial sense to families of 3 or more. Which is great, but I doubt that sharing data with your wife will end up saving you any money. At most you might get a little extra data for the same price your paying now. But here’s to hoping I’m wrong.
