Rumor: HTC already working on quad-core Qualcomm S4 powered flagship device

htc_mystery

The HTC One X may be old news now that the Samsung Galaxy S III is making its way across the globe, but that doesn’t mean HTC is simply going to sit back and accept defeat. The latest rumor would have us believe that a new HTC flagship device is already in the works which will eclipse Samsung’s current offering.

According to an anonymous source, HTC is working on a new device which is powered by a 1.6 quad-core Qualcomm S4 SoC (possibly the APQ8064) with 2GB of RAM, LTE integration, 4.7-inch 720p display, 8 megapixel rear camera and a 1.8 megapixel front-facing shooter. The majority of the specs line up with the current HTC One X, but the quad-core Qualcomm S4 chip could easily make this new HTC device one of the most sought-after handsets later this year.

Unfortunately, there’s an issue which throws the credibility of the anonymous source into question. The source claims the device will feature and Adreno 350 GPU while Qualcomm’s documents claims that the APQ8064 is paired with the Adreno 320. We suspect there’s a typo in there somewhere, but we suggest you digest this news with a grain of salt.

What are your thoughts on the new HTC rumor? Would you be willing to pass on the Samsung Galaxy S III if HTC has plans to release a quad-core Qualcomm S4 powered handset in the next 3-4 months?

Bring it to verizon since they didn’t get the one x.

    • dreamdoggy22

Oh they might bring it to Verizon, but if we believe the rumor of 3 to 4 months for release that means we’ll see it on Big Red sometime next summer lol.

      • killrgummibear

yup every country around the world will get it before the US even sees it. by then everybody will be on to the next big thing anyways.

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

I say the quickest we’ll see this device is October since the One Series just got up and running… and that’s a long time to wait for a phone . . . if you want the GS3 just get the GS3… you can’t compare phones over a half a year and wait around

    • swazedahustla

But if you don’t want a GS3 then go ahead and wait…….GS3 is essentially the same as the One X/Evo LTE so its personal preference. If someone wants to wait they can do so and not be missing out on anything.

      • swazedabusta

Why don’t you open an official AndMe account? I see you here all the time.

It makes NO SENSE to wait go get that GALAXY S3 software wise nothing is better today. Later this year the GALAXY NOTE 2 and the new NEXUS will be out by November. Htc will seriously have to come REAL STRONG with it’s next offering.

Why doesn’t it make sense to wait? Are you gonna call him “useless” and “stupid” or a “broke bum” because he doesn’t have the same retarded viewpoints as you? What if he wants a hardware keyboard? What if he wants a phone with a quad-core processor? What if he wants something ELSE with 2 GB of RAM? What if he wants a phone that doesn’t have all of Samsung’s “nature” crap put on there? Those are all perfectly valid reasons for waiting, dumbass.

Your simply an ASSHOLE on this site. I’m pretty sure whatever he wants he would’ve expressed that. • squiddy20

So I’m an asshole because I tell the honest-to-goodness truth? Haha ok. Whatever you say Richard.
“Do yourself a favor and purchase something for a change” I did. Or didn’t you read my 7 or so posts in direct response to you saying I bought a Galaxy Nexus with Sprint and had it unlocked/rooted within 5 hours of getting it home?
“When was the last time you ever brought anything” A) the word you are looking for is “bought”. You can’t “brought” anything in the “real world”, but you can certainly “buy” things you uneducated moron. B) Just the other day I bought a few camping supplies for a weeklong trek me and my buddies are taking next month. Having fun with those baseless, unfounded, and completely “useless” insults?
Just an FYI, the Android and Me staff have absolutely no say in whether or not *I* choose to be a “troll”. It is entirely my decision. It’s just like you to place the blame on other people/things.

        • Orion78

Richy boy, weren’t you the one that promised the T-mobile version would be Quadcore? You’re wrong yet again.

          • Richard Yarrell

Being WRONG doesn’t matter on this page to much. At least I purchase what I want on any carrier and do what I please. I’m not leaving comments on this site and NEVER PURCHASE THE GOODS like…ie….squiddy20 and the other troll snowbdr89. I put my money where my mouth is and switch carriers at will to get what I want. So YES I will have the dualcore snapdragon S4 with 2gb of ram on tmobile on June 28th. Then will purchase another device come November the NEXT NEXUS with jellybean and place that on tmobile too. So when it comes to rolling with the BIG DOGS in the tech game that’s me I purchase what I want on any carrier whenever I feel like it.

          • squiddy20

When has being wrong ever *not* mattered? You who goes on and on about “X device will be here on X date” and are pretty much ALWAYS wrong. You who goes on and on about “knowing the tech game” but doesn’t know a lick of it yourself? You who goes on and on about how I “never purchase anything” when you know absolutely nothing about me or my spending habits? When have you ever been right?
You’re continually commenting on how you can buy whatever you want when you want, but it’s quite sad that you’re wasting all your hard earned money on something so trivial as a cell phone. It doesn’t improve the quality of your life. It doesn’t help that incredibly horrible grammar or spelling problem you have. And it certainly doesn’t help your whacked out mental condition. Have fun with those high costs and expenses. I won’t be surprised to see another article about you stating you’re homeless again.
“So when it comes to rolling with the BIG DOGS in the tech game that’s me” Not even 6 months ago you were saying the same thing when you were with Verizon. And then with Sprint before that, with your “legendary” Evo 3D that you said would be “Sprint’s flagship device well into 2012″, but was discontinued not even 2 months into the year. What a delusional old fool.

          • snowbdr89

@ dick the dummy I already have a dual core s4 so neener neener douchebag

        • redraider133

Yes nothing today is “better” but that is the whole point of this article, if the htc with quad core would be enough to get people to pass on the sgs3 for this said quad core device..

        • Steam

“So when it comes to rolling with the BIG DOGS in the tech game that’s me I purchase what I want on any carrier whenever I feel like it…” No you broke-ass loser, you imagine to spend a few hundred dollars here and there on a smart phone or four. That is not even in the same universe as what “the big dogs” do. Maybe in your roach-infested ghetto, but not in “the real world”. For example, you live in a soup kitchen in lower Manhattan, I have a 4BR apartment on the Upper West Side. You have a room in the Bronx, I own a nice home in Bronxville. You run to soup kitchens scared and terrified, I donate money to good causes (although not the BM any longer). I don’t run about the android sites telling people what a “big spender” I am. Most of my neighbors have more money than I do, so what? What are you trying to compensate for?
Just so you didn’t think that I’d forgotten about you, the flyers are printed up, al;ong with all of the hate comments you’ve posted here, your picture, and where you work. They start going out in the next week or two. Maybe your imaginary phones, imaginary “size 12″ will help you, but only in your imagination, because the real world hurts like hell.

      • CactusCat

They might be similar in specs, but this last weekend, I took my grand daughter into an ATT store in Detroit and got her a One X with case and car charger for $40. I hadn’t even heard about that special but my grand daughter was going to get an iPhone and I told her to take a look at the Android phones. We made the short trip, found the One X on sale and she loves it. Made all her iphone friends jealous. The screen blew them away. So if indeed the SGS3 and the One X are so similar, then for the moment, the SGS3 is a bit overpriced, but it will come down.

  • Robaire

Nope, this is my last opportunity on verizon for a discounted phone

  • EarthJuice

If it doesn’t have a removable battery and SD memory slot, this means nothing to me. I want an HTC phone in the worst way but without this, it is useless to me.

    • Randy W

Same here. No Expandable Storage and Non-Removable Battery=No Sale.

      • BigCiX

        Even if its a Nexus?

        • rasy

          even…

      • cb2000a

Agreed…this was a killer for me with the HTC One X.

    • killrgummibear

i know what u mean but with HTC expandable storage was getting confusing. my amaze acts like it has 3 places to store things. the actual system, the on phone storage then my 16gb card. then half the time it won’t recognize the storage card when you use it with an app as in saving music or pictures to sd card instead of phone storage. but personally i think that’s a fail on HTCs part. maybe something they just tried to avoid with excluding the expandable memory.

    • markbo2000

I was the same way until the EVO LTE. The battery is no longer a concern, I always have at least 30% at the end of the day…. Midnight.

      • cb2000a

I don’t have a problem with the battery life (one can always use a charge pack). The problem is you’re stuck with a two year contract and a non replaceable battery.

  • thaghost

(wishful thinking): This will be one of the 5 Devices released by google during the thanksgiving release that was rumored. It will be a slighly upgraded One X but with pure stock as it will be branded as a true Nexus device. (my dream): it will be GSM and work on Tmobile so i can trade in this Galaxy Nexus. (if so): i will for the first time pre order a device with no questions asked.

    • http://htcsource.com Nick Gray

I like your way of thinking.

    • http://www.focuszonedevelopment.com Homncruse

I really hope you have latent psychic powers.

      • Nathan D.

This comment made my day, I completely forgot about that. But I do hope this is right.

  • Thomas

Since Verizon is moving away from offering unlimited data as grandfathered in, I see myself only buying phones from Google and keeping my data safe. I can’t wait to see these devices that will launch at end of the year. Judging by the cost of the Nexus on Google play only $400 that sure beats $600 I see for some phones on Verizon.

    • bob

How are you going to use an HSPA phone on Verizon?

  • fletchtb

I’m pulling for HTC. This is a company that is in need of a real hit and I think they still have the ability to pull one off.

  • LuisEAP21-24

I hope this time they use removable battery and micro sd card slot. Also, they better have to use on screen keyboard or at least menu button on the hardware keyboards. if they want more mAh for better battery life.

  • Steve Barry

The only way this would make sense would be if this is in fact one of the rumored Nexus devices supposed to come around Thanksgiving. Didn’t HTC just say less than six months ago they’re going to focus more on quality instead of quantity? You can’t tell me they’re going back on that already just because they’re getting beat out by the SGSIII. If that was all nonsense, and they still continue to pump out phones every other month, something is seriously wrong IMO.

I thought they were really on to something with their One series. A cheap one, a mid grade one, and a powerhouse one. Stick with that and release a new one every year.

I’m REALLY hoping HTC, Moto, and Samsung all make a Nexus device available around Thanksgiving. That would be fantastic.

  • http://www.infotainmentempire.com pekosROB

My head is going to explode due to the current pace of technology. At least it’s for a good cause.

  • dVyper

Sounds good. I’m however fully happy with my One X. This upgrade isn’t enough for me to jealous yet.

  • exhibitO

Still won’t be better than the dual core Exynos 5.

  • Postal Jim

They better put an SD card and have a removeable battery!!!!! Would have a One X and not a SIII if they would have done it right.

  • Max.Steel

I fear HTC’s name is getting over saturated.

  • Hue Three of Five

You guys really think that Google will make a CDMA Nexus available in the play store later this year? I don’t believe that will happen, since CMDA is locked up tight. I think future Nexi are likely going to be GSM in the future.

  • Jake Gall

Verizon did say they where going to get HTCs next device so this may be it.

  • aranea

If it’s not a One X variant (maybe for US only) I would think that it’ll take longer than 3-4 months to get it. If it’s a beefed up One X (XL?) then it sounds very good.

    • http://htcsource.com Nick Gray

Technically the AT&T HTC One X is the TC One XL (L standing for LTE).

      • aranea

Yeah I forgot about that. XL4 then? :D

  • Jimmy_Jo

I’m sure this will be a nice phone. I think the One Series (EVO LTE included) are all pretty cool. But isn’t this kind of ridiculous? They JUST release the One Series. They said they’re trying to keep things simple rather than making 5 different versions of the same thing. i.e EVO,EVO 3D, Sensation, Thunderbolt, and Rezound, They should make software improvements to what they already have then drop a new phone next year. That’s the one thing Apple got right. One phone per year. HTC can do it with 3. The One X, S and V

  • Orion78

I think this is just HTC feeling the heat from Samsung. I do prefer the One series over Samsung though. Anyway, I’m hoping both companies make some Nexus beasts this fall.

  • triangle

HTC and Qualcomm have a long standing history where it seems that HTC usually gets the new Qualcomm processors first, so this makes sense. HTC should use this to their advantage and bring out the first quadcore S4 device. I’m sure other manufacturers will jump at the chance to bring a device with this processor probably later this year. I don’t think any of the android manufacturers will wait until it’s time for their yearly product introduction cycle refresh if they have compelling new technology to offer.

If Samsung’s Exynos 5250 is ready and is the first A15 chip in the market, I don’t think you’ll see them wait next May or June to roll out a phone with this chip. I wouldn’t…

  • SGB101

if we’re always looking 4 months into the future we would ever upgrade.

you just need to jump in, and except you will only be top end for a max of two months, then its all down hill from there lol.

    • aranea

Actually, as long as manufacturers bring the new Android I would be happy but they don’t. That’s the problem. So I’m hoping that this will be the Nexus version of OneX. Because mos probably a variant of SIII will be Samsung’s Nexus phone this year and a beefed up competition like this will stir things up.

  • yankeesusa

I would think of passing on the gs3 since I love htc sense but they would have to fix the multitask issue and add features like the ones that samsung has on their phone like svoice, smart stay, gestures and all that cool stuff. So far right now they only thing that my keep me from a sgs3 is the galaxy note 2.

    • SGB101

Voice is stupid, just a gimic that hardly ever works

  • blotto

“The HTC One X may be old news now that the Samsung Galaxy S III is making its way across the globe, but that doesn’t mean HTC is simply going to sit back and accept defeat.”
    accept the defeat?
    poor little samsung fanboy….
    SIII is a defeat

    • real

Stop judging from the looks of the phones; real life performance and ergonomic of GS3 is better than HOX.

It is kind of a defeat…..

Wifi problem, nerfed ICS multi tasking, worse camera unless in low light….and finally S4 with 1GB ram or Tegra 3 with 1GB ram <<<<< Exynos Quad with 1GB ram or S4 with 2GB ram.

Although I give the non pentile screen a credit,, everything else is lacking.

    • http://htcsource.com Nick Gray

If you knew anything about me, you’d know that I’m a huge HTC fanboy. I started blogging about HTC years before most people even knew what a smartphone was. I personally think the HTC one X is a better phone than the SGSIII, but when you look at the numbers – HTC has already lost this round to Samsung.

  • NickA

New leak straight from an insider at HTC: It’s the One Y and it will only come in pink.

  • Nathan D.

Sounds like a slightly beef up one x and if I does come around thanksgiving I know what my new phone going to be if it happen or if I can get.

I’m still waiting to see what ever happened to Taylor’s confident rumor of the HTC One X coming to T-Mobile as the T-Mobile G4X.

    “sit back and accept defeat”
    What defeat?

    • http://htcsource.com Nick Gray

In a 1:1 battle between the HTC one X and the SGSIII, HTC has lost. Not because it’s an inferior phone, but because Samsung has managed to bring the device to all major carriers without modification. If HTC wants to compete with the big boys, they need to deliver an incredible handset so as many consumers as possible without multiple iterations.

  • Kevin

Accept defeat? Define defeat? Sales? Perhaps. Remains to be seen but I would buy that argument. You’re painting it as accept performance defeat. Sorry but no. Not from every review and benchmark I’ve seen. At best for Samsung it’s a wash.

  • Joe

Samsung did some things good but could have been better…new features for Android phones is good, but they should have made it worldwide quad core, 2GB ram, 12 megapixel camera and just blow everything out of the water…

  • Shawn Clark

If this happen it will be the first device with a quad-core processor with LTE capabilities right?…add another G of ram and add the ability to remove the battery and sd card slot as stated in the rumor…with a more proper kickstand i think we have a winner.

  • pokeflute

It’s the G3 for T-mobile lol and I want it

HTC.. What ever thay do.. It will never.. Ever surpass Samsung tec..as far I’m concerned. I’m not putting down HTC. It’s just that, thay don’t have the rsouces as sumsung do to come out with a super duper hp.. Just look at sg3..its a hp for every one.. N a dream for some one to have one.

The vast majority of users will NEVER seen any huge differences between 2-cores or 4-cores.

@ dick the dummy I already have a dual core s4 so neener neener douchebag

        • Yes nothing today is “better” but that is the whole point of this article, if the htc with quad core would be enough to get people to pass on the sgs3 for this said quad core device..

Nope, this is my last opportunity on verizon for a discounted phone

If it doesn’t have a removable battery and SD memory slot, this means nothing to me. I want an HTC phone in the worst way but without this, it is useless to me.

    • Randy WGuest 3 years ago

Same here. No Expandable Storage and Non-Removable Battery=No Sale.

    • i know what u mean but with HTC expandable storage was getting confusing. my amaze acts like it has 3 places to store things. the actual system, the on phone storage then my 16gb card. then half the time it won’t recognize the storage card when you use it with an app as in saving music or pictures to sd card instead of phone storage. but personally i think that’s a fail on HTCs part. maybe something they just tried to avoid with excluding the expandable memory.

I was the same way until the EVO LTE. The battery is no longer a concern, I always have at least 30% at the end of the day…. Midnight.

      • I don’t have a problem with the battery life (one can always use a charge pack). The problem is you’re stuck with a two year contract and a non replaceable battery.

    • bobGuest 3 years ago

How are you going to use an HSPA phone on Verizon?

  7. I’m pulling for HTC. This is a company that is in need of a real hit and I think they still have the ability to pull one off.

  8. LuisEAP21-24Guest 3 years ago

I hope this time they use removable battery and micro sd card slot. Also, they better have to use on screen keyboard or at least menu button on the hardware keyboards. if they want more mAh for better battery life.

  10. My head is going to explode due to the current pace of technology. At least it’s for a good cause.

  11. Sounds good. I’m however fully happy with my One X. This upgrade isn’t enough for me to jealous yet.

  12. Still won’t be better than the dual core Exynos 5.

  13. They better put an SD card and have a removeable battery!!!!! Would have a One X and not a SIII if they would have done it right.

  14. I fear HTC’s name is getting over saturated.

  15. You guys really think that Google will make a CDMA Nexus available in the play store later this year? I don’t believe that will happen, since CMDA is locked up tight. I think future Nexi are likely going to be GSM in the future.

  16. Verizon did say they where going to get HTCs next device so this may be it.

  17. If it’s not a One X variant (maybe for US only) I would think that it’ll take longer than 3-4 months to get it. If it’s a beefed up One X (XL?) then it sounds very good.

  19. I think this is just HTC feeling the heat from Samsung. I do prefer the One series over Samsung though. Anyway, I’m hoping both companies make some Nexus beasts this fall.

I wouldn’t…

  21. if we’re always looking 4 months into the future we would ever upgrade.

you just need to jump in, and except you will only be top end for a max of two months, then its all down hill from there lol.

    • Actually, as long as manufacturers bring the new Android I would be happy but they don’t. That’s the problem. So I’m hoping that this will be the Nexus version of OneX. Because mos probably a variant of SIII will be Samsung’s Nexus phone this year and a beefed up competition like this will stir things up.

“The HTC One X may be old news now that the Samsung Galaxy S III is making its way across the globe, but that doesn’t mean HTC is simply going to sit back and accept defeat.”
    accept the defeat?
    poor little samsung fanboy….
    SIII is a defeat

    • realGuest 3 years ago

Stop judging from the looks of the phones; real life performance and ergonomic of GS3 is better than HOX.

It is kind of a defeat…..

Wifi problem, nerfed ICS multi tasking, worse camera unless in low light….and finally S4 with 1GB ram or Tegra 3 with 1GB ram <<<<< Exynos Quad with 1GB ram or S4 with 2GB ram.

Although I give the non pentile screen a credit,, everything else is lacking.

    • If you knew anything about me, you’d know that I’m a huge HTC fanboy. I started blogging about HTC years before most people even knew what a smartphone was. I personally think the HTC one X is a better phone than the SGSIII, but when you look at the numbers – HTC has already lost this round to Samsung.

New leak straight from an insider at HTC: It’s the One Y and it will only come in pink.

  25. Sounds like a slightly beef up one x and if I does come around thanksgiving I know what my new phone going to be if it happen or if I can get.

  26. I’m still waiting to see what ever happened to Taylor’s confident rumor of the HTC One X coming to T-Mobile as the T-Mobile G4X.

    Here was Taylor’s original report:

    “sit back and accept defeat”
    What defeat?

    • In a 1:1 battle between the HTC one X and the SGSIII, HTC has lost. Not because it’s an inferior phone, but because Samsung has managed to bring the device to all major carriers without modification. If HTC wants to compete with the big boys, they need to deliver an incredible handset so as many consumers as possible without multiple iterations.

  31. KevinGuest 3 years ago

Accept defeat? Define defeat? Sales? Perhaps. Remains to be seen but I would buy that argument. You’re painting it as accept performance defeat. Sorry but no. Not from every review and benchmark I’ve seen. At best for Samsung it’s a wash.

  32. JoeGuest 3 years ago

Samsung did some things good but could have been better…new features for Android phones is good, but they should have made it worldwide quad core, 2GB ram, 12 megapixel camera and just blow everything out of the water…

  33. If this happen it will be the first device with a quad-core processor with LTE capabilities right?…add another G of ram and add the ability to remove the battery and sd card slot as stated in the rumor…with a more proper kickstand i think we have a winner.

And I NEVER see a day in the future where 100,000s of apps in the store will EVER run that much faster based on 8/16/32 cores

  38. speed up the pace manufacturers please… This is just ridiculous how quickly hardware advances

  39. I’m hoping HTC just drops the low and mid range phones completely. If they were to adopt an Apple sort of hardware revamp (once/year) it could go a long way to amortize their costs over the long run and help with profitability.
