Manually install the Jelly Bean update on your GSM Nexus S

Though only a .1 release, Jelly Bean feels like a major upgrade to the Android platform. Project Butter makes the operating system feel smooth and fluid, addressing one of the bigger criticism of Androids past. When the 4.1 OS was unveiled at Google’s I/O developer conference, Google told us that the Nexus devices would receive the update in mid-July.

Good news for those of you who own a GSM Nexus S (either I9020T or I9023) looking to get your hands on the latest great Android release. A user over at XDA Developers has posted the official OTA update from Google so you can manually install Jelly Bean before it hits your phone as an OTA. Sprint Nexus S 4G owners will have to wait a little longer for your Jelly Bean goodness, though it should hopefully still come before the end of the month.

If you do install Android 4.1 on your Nexus S device, let us know your initial impressions of Jelly Bean in the comments below.

    I must have missed something. Last I checked, there is no GSM/UMTS Nexus S 4G. Only a CDMA/WiMAX one…

Some days, there just isn’t enough caffeine in the world. Time to go back to bed.

I recommend an IV drip of pure caffeine at your bedside.

You don’t have to correct every little typo and mistake. Nothing that he said incorrectly changed the whole body of information or caused any problems.

works fine – pretty smooth – google.now results are quite astonishing in text, however i’ve yet to hear some spoken results – anyone an idea for this issue (and yes speak out is enabled)

CAN you manually install JB update on stock, unrooted ICS anyway? I thought somewhere from ICS manual updating through recovery is blocked, giving ‘error 7′ messages..
Am I wrong, or is it changed back to allow manual updating again?

    • golgavatar

That’s correct, you would need a custom recovery to do that.

Since I couldn’t figure out the manual updater (same error 7 message), I dug into the XDA thread (pg 289) and found a fix, which I had to tweak to get it to work and update on it’s own.

      - Start with ‘Airplane Mode’ on.
      - Go to ‘Settings’ > ‘Apps’ and select the ‘All’ tab
      - Scroll down to ‘Google Service Framework’ and first ‘Clear data’
      - Then, ‘Force Stop’ the application (order is critical)
      - Turn off ‘Airplane Mode’ and I recommend a good WiFi connection
      - From ‘Settings’ scroll down to the bottom to ‘About Phone’
      - Select it and then select ‘System Update’
      - At this point, the update was already downloading for me, but you may need hit ‘Check for Update’

Thanks Taylor. I was trying in many ways along with stopping the service but I might have missed the order. Now I’m getting the update :)

        Thanks for the quoted tip!

I have tried this several times and it keeps saying my system is up to date..

      • PatCyr

  • BadPlanner

Pardon my elementary inquiry, But im not following something here. Is the AT&T Nexus S getting updated? Doesn’t seem like it.

  • Rabin Dhital

Still on 4.0.4 Waiting jellybean update for my gsm galaxy nexus.. doesn’t work Google service framework twiq…:(

Working well so far. Text appears to be more readable. Now If only I could find a flight simulator app to work on my phone, something similar to the flight simulator download program – http://flightsimulatordownloadd.org/ I use on my PC.
