Carrier confirms HTC One XL, HTC One S Android 4.1 update being prepped

HTC’s official stance on the Android 4.1 update is still “reviewing the software to determine our upgrade plans and schedule,” but that’s not stopping Telstra from confirming that HTC is already working on the Jelly Bean update for the HTC One S and HTC One XL (aka HTC one X in the US). Telstra’s smartphone software updates page does not reveal when the update will be available for handset owners, but it’s probably not going to roll out any time soon since the update hasn’t yet been submitted for testing.

Many have been disappointed with how long it takes OEMs to push out the latest Android updates. This time around, I have a feeling that HTC, Samsung and most other smartphone makers will surprise with how fast they are able to deliver the Android 4.1 update to handsets currently running on Ice Cream Sandwich.

Let’s be VERY clear here. Google has stated that they gave handset makers access to Jelly Bean a few months ahead of the official unveil, which was about a month ago already. So it’s been 3 months. I don’t think the process is going to get any quicker than it’s been, though it may seem faster since they’ve theoretically had 2 months to work on it already.

  By the time jellybean hits my Galaxy S3 i would’ve already brought the New Nexus coming November from the Google play store. Or I just might purchase the upcoming Galaxy Note 2 in September/October it will come with jellybean out the box. Either way I will be just fine i am enjoying my Galaxy S3 with ice cream sandwich it’s a wonderful device.

    Based on the past, the “Note 2″ won’t be out anywhere near your ridiculously stupid timeframe. The first one was announced in early September and first released in Germany late in October, then the US in February. Not only that, but the expected preview of the device is a day before IFA (the event when the first one was announced), which is August 30. Even if Samsung is able to pull off releasing this phone internationally (including the US) at roughly the same time, we’re still looking at 2 or so months from its announcement, just like any other phone. What a dumbass.

I really hope the jelly bean updates are faster than we expect. I’m still skeptical given that the carriers still have to test and approve all builds, so I’m not expecting to see anything until 4Q12 at the earliest and more likely 2013. I really hope that I’m wrong and you’re right. I would love, love, love some jelly bean on these devices.

So HTC might be finished with the upgrade before CyanogenMod do 10? That’ll be a first innit?! A briliant first. I’m still waiting for flipping CM9 for my One X. Hurry up!

  if this gets released, it may be time to pop my cherry at relocking my device to recive it. as like you im a bit peeved that there isnt a decent (read solid)stock ics rom available for my (int) One X.

This could be a real win for HTC if they can deliver JB before other manufacturers do for their high end phones. Come on HTC, you can doi it!

My money’s on a early September Android 4.1 update for the HTC One X and One S. HTC was the first to push out Android 2.3, 4.0 and the only OEM to update a device from 2.3 to Honeycomb.

Cm9 has been in working alpha for a while now, I’m using it to type this comment and it’s perfect bar the very occasional oddity! Check xda :)

  ????? What does CM9 have do with Jelly Bean? HTC released its first Android 4.0 update months before CM9 was available.

    I think James means CM10, which is based on Jelly Bean. A couple of unofficial CM10 builds have been circulating for the past couple of days.
    
    They aren’t ready to be used as a daily driver, but it’s cool to see the Android enthusiasts are already hard at work

    He means CM10. There are a few builds out there already though most are still in Alpha. Beat that HTC!

      Lets not compare Alpha and Beta release timeframes to OEM builds which go through rigorous internal testing and multiple iterations of carrier testing before getting pushed out.

        Not comparing, just reiterating the above comment. Also, often times these cooked rom’s HAVE gone through rigorous testing by the mod community. Obviously Alpha and Beta releases aren’t ready, but depending on the device they mean a speedy delivery of a final build. I have seen several devices that get much better quality rom’s than what the manufacturer/carriers give out.

it is just a minor update that shouldn’t take long to merge it with ICS, just look at CM team which did exactly that.

This isn’t a full blown change like going from gb to ics. Hopefully that makes it easier to update phones and get updates out faster.

Before you get too carried away, please bear in mind that the Galaxy Nexus on this carrier (Telstra) is still running 4.0.1 so don’t put too much stock in their quoted update schedule. They are probably one of the worst carriers in the world for updates.
