Google Play gift cards coming soon to a retailer near you

One of our most requested features for Google Play is finally about to become a reality. Any day now Google will announce that Android fans can purchase gift cards for Google Play and redeem them to purchase music, movies, books, apps, and more.

Android Police discovered that the new Google Play app update includes new options for redeeming a gift card code, and creating a wish list for your most wanted content. Android Central has also spotted some $10 and $25 gift cards at an unknown retail store, so we should be hearing something from Google any day.

Hints of gift cards began to appear when Google released the Nexus 7. It included a free $25 credit for Google Play that users could use to purchase anything they liked. If you already have a Nexus 7, you might have noticed a Google Play balance appear in your payment methods with a picture of a gift card.

As someone who loves to give away devices and prizes, we can’t wait for these gift cards to become available.

    Excellent and long overdue idea.

You know what would be nice? Add a NFC tag so Nexus owners just tap the gift card to redeem the amount of the gift.

Interesting. Not sure if that would increase the cost though of production though, and I don’t know how that would work from a security perspective.

This is fantastic news, it would be great if we could buy it on Amazon and other online retailers.

Why would you buy them online form Amazon and others when you’ll most likely be able to gift them directly from Google Play?

Because options are good, and Amazon may support payments for people in countries which are not explicitly supported by Google Play.

These are long overdue. Glad to see them coming out. Merry Christmas!

It was always a sad sight with Facebook gift cards littering checkout areas….with Apple gift cards, etc but no Google representation. About time, Google. ..

    Hey Taylor,

As someone who loves to receive devices and prizes, I can’t wait for these gift cards to become available either. :)

    About freaking time.

Any idea if those gift cards can be used in Google Wallet??

I was just thinking that I’d be more willing to spend $25 on a giftcard for a friend, than to spend $25 in the appstore on apps/games for myself. I wonder what that’s about.

I have this weird taste in my mouth about buying apps period, especially if they’re over 2 dollars. Which in itself is interesting, I would spend $4 on a latte without a second thought about it.

    What do you guys think?

If they work like the Google Play credit I received when I purchased my Nexus 7 this is a fail. I have $6.39 left on my credit that I can not use, unless I want to buy 6 $0.99 cent songs. If I try to buy a $9.99 album it says I can not use the credit because of insufficient funds.

I want to use the credit and what is left due placed on my credit card. Google play doesn’t allow this.

Amazon does. Have no clue if Apple iTunes allows it as I do not buy from Apple.
