Unlock your bootloader with Motorola’s Unlock My Device

droid-bionic-review-630

After what feels like years of waiting, Motorola has launched “Unlock My Device,” a legitimate way for Motorola brand Android users to unlock the bootloader of their device, allowing for the installation of third-party software.

In order to easily flash custom ROMs or other similar third-party software to your Android device, one of the first steps you have to take is unlocking your bootloader. Motorola is notorious for making that next to impossible. Different hacking methods have been introduced for unlocking Motorola bootloaders in the past, but they should all be unnecessary now. Motorola promised that they’d provide a relatively simple bootloader unlocking solution, and today, they’ve done just that.

By installing the Android SDK, some Motorola drivers and following a handful of directions, Motorola’s Unlock My Device service will unlock the bootloader of your device.

Checking the list of supported devices right now returns an error page. So unfortunately, we don’t know what devices will be able to be unlocked using Unlock My Device. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the service as more information is made available. Keep your fingers crossed that Verizon’s big list of Droid devices make the cut.

The error page appears if you’re using a mobile browser. It works from a desktop or if you change your user agent settings.

This is awesome news. Motorola has amazing phones, they need to make a Nexus and expand(most of their high ends go to Verizon).

  • vforvortex

Looks like Google is starting to take over. Although they might not admit that in order to agitate the others like samsung and htc.

Cool!…wait…..WHAT? Moto Xoom is the only VZW device? Once again, it seems that no matter what OEMs try to do to satisfy their customers, Verizon either drags their until the issue is totally irrelevant or simply vetos OEMs efforts. Damn am I glad I got a Galaxy Nexus. Verizon: Maintain your network, control your tower/backhaul security and stop messing with your customer’s phones.

DONT BUY MOTOROLA, THEY DONT UPDATE THEIR PHONES (JUST 1 UPDATE PER MODEL IS THE APROX) AND WITH THEIR LOCKED BOOTLOADER POLICY THEY ALSO DONT ALLOW USER TO INSTALL CUSTOM ROMs. IF YOU LIKE THE FREEDOM OF ANDROID I ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO VETO MOTOROLA UNTILL THEY UNLOCK THE BOOTLOADERS.

I dont understand why i continue to read comments like “cant install custom roms cause MOTO wont unlock bootlaoder “. Do your research, I flash 2-5 different roms a day. >>>>>>>>> Nope this is just a boot loader unlock.. For network unlock you can contact your service provider to do so.. If not there are several commercial vendors online like http://www.superunlockcodes.com who are engaged in unlocking you can opt any of them…
