Android Rookies: 10 new apps worth checking out this week

New apps need lovin’ too, right? Every day there are thousands of new entries on the Google Play store, but many go unnoticed and never receive the attention they deserve. We have shown in the past that this community can discover great apps and launch them to new heights, so we’re bringing back our weekly column Android Rookies that highlights new apps with less than 100k installs. Browse our new Android app picks below and let us know which ones you enjoy.

Pitch: Find friends and like-minded people nearby. Have more fun navigating the world! By alerting you to friends nearby and other interesting people, Sonar reveals small world moments you’d have otherwise missed.

Pitch: From the most widely read food magazine in the country comes thousands of original and classic recipes straight to your phone. Browse, read, savor and save your favorite recipes and articles for easy access any time, any place (the grocery store comes to mind). From drinks to dinner to dessert, Relish Daily Dish is a moveable feast.

Pitch: We make sure you never get stranded in the city. Lyft is a sweet new on-demand ride service that’s a fraction of the cost of a cab. Now available for Android, you can instantly request a pickup, and a safe, friendly driver will be there within minutes. We select awesome, trustworthy drivers from the community who swiftly get you to your destination (they’re background-checked AND personality-checked, too!).

Pitch: Omega StatusBar is so much more than just another statusbar replacement. It takes statusbar customizability to the next level. With tons of themes available from many developers, you will have an endless supply of looks, styles, and layouts to choose from. On top of that, Omega StatusBar also offers many built-in settings and preferences to get the statusbar look just how you want it! Omega StatusBar offers features that no other statusbar replacement on the market has done!

Pitch: Transparent clock & world weather is a full featured, totally customizable digital clock and weather forecast application and widget. It comes in 3 sizes, 4×1, 4×2 and 5×2 and is easy to setup and customize.

Pitch: Mobile Alarm System is a burglar alarm system with many features. It protects your phone from theft and nosey people or can also be used simply as a prank.

Pitch: SwatchMatic, the point-and-shoot color palette maker . . . with robots! You need colors — for your website, your company logo, your wedding, your kitchen makeover, whatever. Fortunately, they’re everywhere, and SwatchMatic helps you artfully combine and share them.

Pitch: Introducing Sleep Time by Azumio, the next generation sleep cycle alarm clock that will leave you feeling rested after every night’s sleep! Sleep Time uses the sensitive accelerometer in your Android to detect movements during the night. Our advanced algorithm determines your phase of sleep, and sets off the alarm at the perfect moment. You will never wake up from a deep sleep feeling groggy again.

Pitch: NO false cleaning, All Clear makes it thoroughly! Your handset cannot enjoy a thorough cleaning? Running more and more slowly? Some cleaning-featured app cannot help you so much? And perhaps you are tired of fake clear report? Don’t ever worry about these problems, now!

Pitch: AirCalc is the only floating calculator for Android. AirCalc allows you to keep your calculator above any running applications. Enjoy the desktop experience!

That Omega Statusbar app looks pretty cool. I’m gonna try that out. Thanks!!

I’ve been loving Sleep Time so far, I work from home and it always wakes me up at the RIGHT moment. Watching sleep graphs is also interesting :D

Sleep as Android is a similar app with much more customization but with a “gingerbread” look&feel, I abandoned it for Sleep Time: looks better, works better.

Im trying out Omega, my wife uses sleep time and loves it. Lyft looks awesome. I’d love to do that to make some extra cash (be a driver that is). Too bad they don’t allow 2 door cars, because my Focus would be perfect. Something to def keep in mind.
    Anyone else use it?

I like reading up on apps for Android as it’ll give me a nice boost in knowledge when I get my first device!

    • Taylor Wimberly

What other types of things would you like to read before you get your first device?

      • Arian

Whether or not you should root your phone, or how to get the best out of everything on your phone.

  • golfpedaler

I really enjoy these posts…It showcases apps that I would have probably never seen…Thanks!!!

I can’t recommend Sleep Time over Sleep as Android. It’s just not as feature rich. And honestly, who cares about looks when you’re gonna be sleeping when you use it?

This time the selection looks nice! 6/10 installed!

As a burgeoning Graphic Deisgner, SwatchMatic is a really cool app. Could use a little work (like actually cancelling when you refuse the save the colour pallet) but overall I’m definitely going to get some use out of it :)

While these are all good apps, I think your missing one really good app. Its called hypedmusic and its very similar to Grooveshark and Spotify but its FREE and ADFREE.

You can read a review of it here:

Left is getting killed with 1 star reviews because they require Facebook authentication. I wouldn’t consider any app with that requirement.

I’m intrigued and skeptical about Sleep Time. I wonder if it can work for me with my wife sleeping in the bed too. I installed it and am going to give it a try, but I am going to put up a post on the developer’s DB and see if they have any info on this type of situation.

But I love the idea of being able to see the quality of my sleep. I get about 5 hours a night, so it would be good to know if it’s at least “god” sleep.

    • OutofPlace

And by “god” I mean “good.” Although I bet God gets rest like he is sleeping on a cloud…

Have you tried OvuView? If you want to avoid pregnancy, or if you want to conceive children, use this one. In my opinion, it is the best, and the developers put a lot of effort to build it. It uses complex methods to estimate the women’s fertility, and it is something I did not see previously.
I think it deserves to be in your top sometimes…
