Rumor: Google Nexus 5 to be based on HTC DROID Incredible X

Back in May, the Wall Street Journal claimed that Google was working with a handful of manufacturers to release five Nexus devices later this year. According to a new rumor, HTC has been selected to create one of the new Nexus devices and is basing its handset on the HTC DROID Incredible X.

According to the anonymous source, the Google Nexus 5 will be running on Android 4.1.2 which isn’t a huge improvement over Android 4.1. The latest version of the Android OS includes improvements to Project Butter, extra lockscreen functionality, minors system tweaks and bug fixes. The hardware on the Google Nexus 5 is said to include a 5-inch 1080p display, quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro, 12 megapixel rear camera, 2 megapixel front-facing camera, a large 2,500 mAh battery and up to 64GB of internal storage.

The source claims to have received the details of the Google Nexus 5 from a “reliable source within HTC” but has offered no real evidence to back up his claims. For now, we’ll be filing this report with the other Nexus rumors (Samsung, Sony and LG) and hope at least one of them turns into a real product that we’ll be able to buy within the next month or two.

  really Taylor? i just think with having released JB so recently i would be surprise for Google to have another huge release this year. JB is barely on enough phones now as it is so i dont think they would further fragment the field so closely after a major release. They can do alot of a small update and taking care of plenty of the bugs in JB as some design issues. Which Nexus rumor are you more excited about? I Think A Sony or HTC device is who im pumped about the most personally. Really like the design of the HTC One X and i really want Sony to make a kick ass phone too.

      I think the difference there is they were all major codename releases. They were also during a time when Google was not averse to releasing multiple significant updates to Android in the same calendar year. JB seems to be changing that mentality. I just don’t see Google dropping KLP this soon, particularly when developers are still trying to understand JB.

      Android 3 was for tablets, so disregard that release and you have Android 2 -> Android 4 in two years, not one. Don’t bet on Android 5 being released this year.

        I don;t see there being a major change, but if you really want variety just root the device and try different ROMS like Cyanogen, AOKP, or ParanoidAndroid.
        
        Some of the clever features built into these really show what should be baked into Android natively.
        
        However, once quadcores are the norm, the OS will have room to play catchup.

        I applaud Htc if this rumor is true. They really need to become more relevant in this android space maybe another Nexus will help them. Meanwhile sorry buddy I am extremely happy with my current Galaxy S3. Plus I am about 6weeks away from my next purchase of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Nothing Htc will make in the next 6months will top the upcoming Galaxy Note 2. Plus NO Nexus will every top any Galaxy Note 2 that’s for sure.

    This rumor is awesome if it’s true. Perhaps Google will make have the nexus one and incredible on Verizon scenario again
    Nexus 5 unlocked and DROID incredible x on Verizon?
    It would make sense since the blurry cam pictures showed the red Verizon version having capacitive buttons, but a benchmark from before showed a strange resolution, so perhaps that was the nexus 5 since I doubt Google will have the next nexus(es) not have onscreen buttons

  I bet it will be an incremental update but would love to be wrong. In fact, I think the best thing they could do would be to allow Google Play driven partial OS updates controlled by Google so we could get baby OS improvements over time by Google without waiting on manufacturers. Clearly they would have to set rules for keeping skins (Sense, Touchwiz, etc) compatible but that should be “easily” (for Google) done without hampering what the manufacturers need to do for their skins.

  I’m in agreement with everyone else. With JB having just been released, it’s much too soon to see an update to KLP. It’s much more likely that the next Nexus will have an incremental point release, like 4.1.2 or 4.1.3, something of that nature.
  
  As to the story at hand, yes, please. I would love for HTC to have another shot at the Nexus. These are fantastic specs if true as well. Count me in if this rumor is legit.

  It’s hard to think that Google will release a new version of android only 5 months after JB. With the Android PDK they promised the tools to start to port the new version on the hardware months before the release and I believe that a new release this year can’t be hidden after october (we have another month). Google has to choose between a more consistent ecosystem and riding the holiday sales (IMHO the most difficult for android market share with lots of worthy competitors like iphone 5 and WP8/WIN RT).

  But last year, they showed Ice Cream Sandwich at I/O as usual, though it wasn’t actually available until December when the Galaxy Nexus released. This year, Jelly Bean released basically right after or even during I/O. Isn’t this correct? I can’t see 5.0 releasing just half a year later, though the argument is there, since everyone was expecting 5.0 to begin with. The thing is 4.1 is a very noticeable improvement over 4.0. I just don’t know that they would make that extra jump already.

  Considering we are already on 4.1.1 it wouldnt surprise me at all. When the 4g version of the Nexus S came out that was running 2.3.7 even though the GSM model was still running 2.3.6. it wont be a “new” version of Android just a few bug fixes. (which 4.1.1 does have)

  I have a feeling starting with ICS, and now JB – the system is in it’s ‘peak stability’ mode. The updates came so quickly before because Android was in it’s infancy and NEEDED updates. JB is a stable giant, and not nearly as flawed in it’s architecture since Android 1.0.
  
  This means a great deal to the community because the ‘fragmentation’ issue has slowly been put to rest, and very good Iphone app developers will have incentive to take a look at Android again. I’m still salty that the creators of Battleheart gave up on Android during it’s 2.x to 3.x time frame, because they didn’t want to put in the time and effort to re-code the game so often.
  
  Google wanted to minimize the fragmentation issue.

  The issue now, is carrier stalls of updates and hardware uniformity (which has become less of an issue as ‘good’ hardware is getting more cost effective for casual consumers).
  
  So all in all, by this time next year, I expect to see a few 4.x updates for minor issues, and possibly 1 major (5.0) update which will likely only be structural in nature (coding infrastructure)

I really hope these rumors are true. 1080p would be amazing! I just hope the 5″ screen isn’t too large. Also, hope there is no pentile action going on although I’m sure I’ll survive at 1080p. :-P

    That’s what everybody said about 720p screens, yet you can tell. It doesn’t require you to be able to identify individual pixels in order to tell that there is a blurring and discoloration with gradients. I do agree that the problems are motivated but they most certainly are not eliminated. That said, I’d rather 1080p pentile that 720p non-pentile.

        You’re definitely miss recent screen tech. Aside from the resolution the SuperAMOLED on SGS3 and SGNexus are utter shit and degradation even compared to SGN1 and SGN2. Low brightness, larger reflection, grayish and bluish screen, not usable in sun. Recent SLCD2 became real state of the art and beat them hands down.

  i agree about the size. i really really dont want my phone to get any bigger then the galaxy nexus. I would be happier with 4.5-4.65 MAX. Anything bigger is just too much for a phone.

    FWIW, I don’t notice the larger phone with my SGS3 over my GNex. But the SGS3 has a nice, small bezel. Bumping up again will be noticeable, I think.

If this is true I hope the rumours about there being multiple phones is also true – 5 Inches is an inch too big for me. I got rid of my HTC One X because the screen was too big. Surely there must be other people out there that want a top of the range phone in the 4 to 4.3 inch category?

  I got rid of my S3 for the same reason. Now i’m on the Rezound or my Nexus. Nexus radios are still kind of an issue, even with JB, but i’m perfectly happy with 4.3, or 4.5 with a small Bezel.
  
  The RAZR M feels so good in hand. I saw the pics, and was like meh, still has a bezel. But i picked it up at the store, and was pleasantly surprised on how good it feels. that small bezel makes the 4.3″ screen look even smaller though, hahaha

      there are still many of us out here who still think the 4″- 4.3″ screen size is the sweet spot. maybe 4.5″ if it was edge-to-edge with on-screen buttons.
      if i wanted a mobile device with a 5″, 7″ or 9″ screen i would buy a tablet

      Last time I checked Apple said that 3.5″ was the perfect screen size but now that all flagship Android smartphones have large screens Apple has decide to catch up to the times. Apple is not leading anymore, they are just following the footsteps of Google and Android.

  nice. I was thinking about doing the same for the post image, but chose to use the Nexus logo instead since all Nexus devices has had a unique look even if they were based off of other devices.

So if this is based off of the Droid Incredible X we can pretty much be certain we won’t see it on Verizon. I expect them to do the same thing they did with the Incredible and not want offer a similar phone.

  I upvoted reluctantly. I have to agree(unfortunately), but I can dream that there will be this Nexus on VZW. The most I hope for is that they keep the same chipset to help people turn the DiX into the Nexus that Google intended.
  
  I am heavily eyeing this phone. If it is a Nexus, this is pure purchase. The stats on the phone sound so beast, that when/if it releases I going to call my phone Hank McCoy.

I like everything about those specs except for the fact that it is a snapdragon. The S3 sucked in terms of performance. Hopefully the quad s4 is better.

    I had a dual core s3 in my old Rezound. It was choppy even after root and debloat, and I have seen that criticism about that version of the processor before.
    
    I would probably prefer a TI processor. When comparing the Galaxy S3 to my GSM Jellybean Nexus there was no comparison. The Nexus was way faster. But to be fair I haven’t spent a lot of time with newer snapdragon devices.

      Its faster because the S3 is running Touchwiz with ICS. Of course the Gnex runs smoother with stock and JB. It has nothing to do with the CPU. GS3 with stock/AOKP JB is the smoothest smartphone you can get. Touchwiz ruins phones.

      S4 Kraits are REALLY fast, and with Butter and Adreno 320, it will easily be as smooth as the ip5. Of course when A15 comes out it will bring desk-top grade computing into your pocket. Imagine an Exynos 5450! Wanna know the best part? 20nm, which means SUPER efficient.

  NVIDIA may have Qualcomm beat in terms of brute processing power, but Qualcomm has always been able to best NVIDIA on battery life. When using a 5-inch device, battery life has to be one of the major considerations. Keep in mind that the new S4 Pro benchmark number currently outpace anything NVIDIA currently has on the market. The Tegra 3 Plus will have a faster clock speed, but that’s the only real difference besides support for LTE.

    I figured they were using the qualcomm for battery since it will most likely be an LTE device. I liked the snapdragon in my Inc2, but in my Rezound it was choppy. It was fast at times but it stuttered a lot. I was rooted with S-Off. I will have to give the s4 a fair shot though.

      Yeah, the Rezound was not the best performing phone on the market since Sense 3.5 was extremely heavy and it didn’t help that HTC bumped the resolution up to 720p at the same time. Remove HTC’s custom UI with another launcher and things get a lot better.

Removable battery please…
For all us ROM flashers the occasional SOD is easily solved with a battery pull so as long as it has a removable battery – we’re good.

  Typically they do provide some way to do a hard reset without a battery pull on phones without removable batteries. For example, the One X does it when you hold down the power button for 10 seconds.

If this is unlocked for ~$400 – $450 on the Play Store and can do CDMA/LTE and GSM/HSPA+ I would be in heaven. I would possibly consider selling my soul for this on Verizon and get 4g LTE in my little rural town 30 minutes from Indianapolis. If those radios fit in a tiny iphone 5, im sure they could squeeze them into this behemoth.

5″ screen? Really? I’m really happy with my Nexus 7. For my phone I’m actually looking for a smaller screen. Maybe something in the 3″-4″ range.

These screens keep getting bigger and bigger. I mean, the Galaxy Note is ridiculously large. They are uncomfortable to carry around and when holding in one hand, is hard to tap the screen in the opposite corner of your thumb. I own a Razr and it is 4.3″. I have some big hands and even that is hard to click in one hand.

I think tablets should be 5″+ and phones should stay no larger than 4″.

    Dude..he’s just expressing his opinion. I’m in the same camp as he is. I believe that anything bigger than 4.65 on my GNex is too big as an everyday driver phone. That’s just me. Does it mean I want them to cater to me? No. I would like something for everyone. If this comes out at 5″, I just won’t be getting one. I’ll resort to an unlocked bootloader of another manufacturer that has a size that suits my needs.

  You don’t have big hands, I can use an S3 one handed easy. A 5″ screen is fine for a lot of people. Though I do think a mini version should be a standard option at release. If it’s an edge to edge screen, it shouldn’t be noticably larger than a GNex

  Off-contract is superior anyway. You save significant money (not to mention the freedom to upgrade whenever you want/can afford it, and no legal contract with any carrier for continued service) by purchasing your phone at full-retail and paying a lower monthly rate than you do with any subsidy you gain by being on contract.

    options for people like me as well as smaller handed people, that’s the hole reason Android is so great, it allows those pf us who don’t fit a standardized sheep mold to have options that work for us.

  probably not gonnabe a CDMA only, because every Nexus phone has had a GSM model.
  Another thing is, AOSP used to be only on GSM, so im sure Google wouldn’t change it.

  yeah but you can squeeze a little more inch space if you make the bezel thinner and smaller, and god knows that the bezel on the gnex is not as perfect as I’d like it to be… probably up to 4.85 with not making it bigger so the device itself would probably be just a little bigger than the gnex

Sweet if this comes to exist as a Nexus. The Galaxy Nexus as it is now can accommodate a 5″ screen if they make the bezel thinner. The battery should be removable. I have plenty of room on my 32gb Nexus, so I won’t worry about SD card slot.

The iPhone stuffs GSM/CDMA radios in there. Why can’t the next Nexus? Then it could be the same unlocked device that you could take to carrier of choice. Not sure Sprint/Verizon would like that, though.

Only morons would want a 5 inches device! Its too big and clumsy. You can measure and compare it to your dlck size, but thats all (most of the time this minitablet wins against the typical android poser dlck size i guess). I rather have a smaller phone and a free off-hand for a gun maybe (just in case you are stuck in a black neighborhood or wal-mart, best buy,…u name it).

Even if it’s just a rumor, I’m still excited at the mere possibility. HTC has stellar build quality and feel on their phones. A pure Google phone by HTC is fantastic. Even at 5″, with on screen buttons they can go with a smaller bezel and it won’t be much larger than the One X. I really want the quad-core S4 and Adreno 320 in the next Nexus. So far the rumors only point to this HTC and LG having that. I’m also fine with JB or an incremental upgrade from it. Unlocked for around $450-$550 and I would be all over this (probably even get it at $599). HTC needs to bring back the high level Nexus like they had with the Nexus One. 64GB storage would be great and I wouldn’t care if it had removable storage with that capacity. Bring it on HTC.

We all love rumours and speculation.

“5-inch 1080p display, quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro, 12 megapixel rear camera, 2 megapixel front-facing camera, a large 2,500 mAh battery and up to 64GB of internal storage”

These all sound like a compilation of all our wish lists put together. I personally cannot see this being released in any guise as a HTC phone or a Nexus or a Verizon Droid, but I will be pleasantly surprised if it is.

I can’t wait for the next Nexus device(s). It has been said that it is possible up to 5 Nexus devices could be released, I can imagine that may be at least one phone and at least one tablet (maybe a 10″ tablet), but who knows if that would mean multiple phones, or multiple phones and tablets or a single phone and multiple tablets?

I think we should find out within the next 2 months, especially if Google want to get the holiday sales in.

Personally I would like a Nexus device with a top display between 4.65 – 4.8″, at least 8MP camera and 16-32 Gb inbuilt storage(preferably 32).

Roll on Nexus release(s)

I doubt the next Nexus will be HTC. I recently spoke with a Google employee that works on the Android team. He said that HTC and Google were working on the cdma Verizon version of Nexus One but there was an issues with the phone. The issues had to do with the antenna and some other hardware. He didn’t mention why exactly they couldn’t get it working properly, but after a period of time they dropped the project. They had some sort of private dispute with HTC because they ended up taking the plans for cdma Nexus One and porting it into a different phone. Not sure what phone and if it was the incredible or not, he didn’t say. Thats why we have not seen another HTC Nexus again and only samsung.

Anybody else notice that the Galaxy Nexus is no longer available on Google Play? It’s been unavailable for purchase on the US site of course, but for sale in the EU up until a few days ago. Now, it doesn’t even appear on any of the Play sites – only the Nexus 7 is there.

Methinks this means they will be announcing something soon on the Nexus phone front…

I would be over the moon if Google started bringing out more Nexus devices. I want to be able to buy a vanilla Android phone, but it’s just TOO HARD to get my hands on the Nexus 4. More Nexus devices means more chances for people to get a phone that hasn’t been ruined by manufacturer UI bloat!
