Top 10 Android app updates: Drive, Pinterest, Kingsoft Office

updates-notification-10-market

Welcome back to the return of our weekly Top 10 Android App Updates column, where we take a look at the most upgraded apps for the week. I’ve found that one of the best ways to discover useful apps is to look at what people are actually updating, and not focus on which apps have the most installs.

To find the most updated apps, I turn to AppAware. It’s a great tool that shows me which apps have active support from their developers and sometimes reminds me of an old app that I might have removed long ago. Make sure to install it so your activity can help determine our weekly top 10 list.

As in the past, we are going to filter out minor updates for the super popular apps that have over 10 million installs, but I’m going to make an exception for apps that had significant updates. I hope you enjoy this weekly feature and discover some apps that you might find useful.

Pinterest – Version 1.0.5

What’s new in this version:

  • Tall images are now bigger and easier to see.
  • It’s now easier to pin from your favorite websites.
  • Easily discover great new boards by seeing where a pin has been repinned.
  • More fixes based on great feedback from our community.

I have never been a fan of Pinterest and I don’t think this recent update will get me to switch. New features include taller images, improving pinning from websites, and more discovery tools. Springpad will continue to be my go to app for note taking and clipping content from the web.

Google Drive 1.1.4.29

What’s new in this version:

  • Create folder, upload to folder and move to folder
  • Filter folder contents by file type
  • Option to auto-sync pinned content while on 3G
  • Richer Google Presentations viewing experience
  • Basic table support in Documents Editor
  • Create, reply and resolve comments in Documents Editor
  • View and change fonts in Documents Editor
  • Pinch to zoom in Documents Editor
  • Print files using Google Cloud Print
  • Option to resume interrupted uploads
  • Updates to gesture detection

When most of Google’s apps have over 100 million installs, I find it hard to believe that Drive is just over 10 million. I use this app weekly to view all the documents I create on my desktop, and it’s great for sharing lists with my wife. The latest update adds improved functionality from the web app, and Android specific enhancements like pinch-to-zoom and gesture detection.

Wattpad – Version 3.2.1

What’s new in this version:

  • Fix for not saving reading position
  • Fix for screen timing out while reading
  • Fix for story parts not advancing
  • Brand new reader that has rich text (bold, italics), drag to scroll, faster and smoother with page transition animations
  • Bug fixes

Wattpad claims to be the world’s largest community of readers and writers, with over 100,000 free books. Their latest update includes a new reader with faster scrolling and page transitions.

Shopper – Version 2.6

What’s new in this version:

  • Filter weekly sales at featured local stores by category so you can focus on your favorite deals
  • Browse visually similar products when searching for apparel
  • Improved performance and stability

Here is another Google app that I am shocked to see only have 5 million installs. I use Shopper almost every time I go to the store to check online prices of products and read reviews before I make a purchase. Grab it now if you have never tried it and take it shopping with you this weekend.

Kingsoft Office – Version 5.0.1

What’s new in this version:

  • Improved: In Writer, when selecting contents, adjust the space between the left selection handle and the square magnifying glass.
  • Fixed: In Writer, fix the problem that when the round magnifying glass appears, the cursor can’t be moved to its position.
  • Added: In Spreadsheet, support Custom Lists, such as Sun, Mon, Tue…
  • Added: In Spreadsheet, add the exclusive Highlight feature.

There are quite a few productivity suites that allow you to edit Office files, but most of them are paid. Kingsoft Office is completely free and it supports over 23 kinds of file types. The new update includes an improved Writer and new features for the Spreadsheet app.

File Expert – Version 5.0

What’s new in this version:

  • Web PC Suite: Convenient to manage mobile device files on PC.
  • DLNA Media Server: Enjoy the media entertainment anytime and anywhere
  • Featured Games and Apps Recommendation: Don’t miss any good Apps of games!
  • Professional File Manager: Manage all your files!
  • Re-designed UI and UE: It is still that File Expert you know, but comes with more features and enhancements!

File Expert is a fully featured file manager that includes support for many cloud services including Google Drive, Dropbox, Box.net, SkyDrive, and more. They just upgraded to version 5.0 that includes a complete makeover, so this might be the time to give them a try if your current file manger is growing stale.

Workout Trainer – Version 4.1

What’s new in this version:

  • Revamped and modern look & feel!
  • Dashboard view helps you discover the latest things to do.
  • New Community Forums let you chat about health & fitness topics.
  • Improved user profiles and friend finding.
  • Filter workouts by difficulty, target area and more.
  • Bug fixes.
  • Removed find friends by contacts feature which required the read contacts permission.

Workout Trainer recently upgraded to version 4.0, which added an all new Holo theme. The app guides you through exercises with timed, step-by-step audio, photo and video instructions. It also has a great community  built around the app that lets you create a profile and chat with other users in the forums.

Sonar – Version 1.1.83

What’s new in this version:

  • Address recent crashing

This week Sonar got a rather minor bug fix update, but I wanted to share this app because I have been really enjoying it. The app allows you to connect to all your social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, Linkden) and then alerts you when a friend might be nearby. It also includes a discovery mode that matches you up with other people that have the same interests and connections. Check it out and let us know what you think.

Smart Compass – Version 1.4.4

What’s new in this version:

  • Nexus 7 support.
  • Design update.

Everyone loves a good compass and Smart Tools co. has a nice collection of Android apps going. This update apps support for the Nexus 7 and improves the overall design.

Glympse – Version 1.37

What’s new in this version:

  • Improved handling of background location sharing.
  • Improved location detection and battery management.
  • Updated Facebook integration.
  • More routing options on certain devices.
  • Several bug fixes and other small enhancements.
  • Look for a MAJOR update coming soon. New look, new features, and lots more.

Google Maps already supports location sharing with features like Latitude, but Glympse brings some added features and allows you to share with others that don’t have a Google account. There is no sign-up needed and no social networks to manage. This week’s update is pretty minor with some small enhancements, but they promise a major update is coming soon.
