Top 10 Android game releases this week: Need for Speed, Chrono Trigger, Family Feud

contrack-killer-2

This week we’re taking another break from our Android Gaming Weekly recap to focus on new releases. We still plan to cover upcoming releases and games we’re playing, but this new column is dedicated to new games you can install and start playing right now. Check out our top picks and let us know if you have any suggestions for next week in the comments below.

1. Need for Speed Most Wanted

Description: Do you dare to be the Most Wanted? Buckle up, hit the gas and hold on tight; you’re in for the ride of your life. Outrun cops, outsmart rivals — and outdrive your friends — in the most dangerous Need for Speed yet. Evade a relentless police force while you clash with street racers. Race and chase hot cars like the SRT Viper GTS, Porsche 911 Carrera S, Hummer H1 Alpha, and many more. Feel the intensity of no-brakes-allowed street racing with realistic full-car damage for the first time on mobile.

Notes: I’ve been playing this a couple days and it’s totally worth the $6.99 asking price.

2. Chrono Trigger

Description: CHRONO TRIGGER is the timeless role-playing classic developed by the “Dream Team” of DRAGON QUEST creator Yuji Horii, Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama, and the creators of FINAL FANTASY. Featuring revolutionary gameplay and an epic tale of time travel and high adventure, CHRONO TRIGGER captured the hearts of a gaming generation, selling over three-and-a-half million copies around the world.

Notes: I’m old enough to remember playing this game on a console. It’s one of the best classic RPGs from Square Enix, but you might want to read some more reviews before you pay $9.99.

3. Contract Killer 2

Description: You are Jack Griffin, the ultimate Contract Killer. Experience an intense, international storyline combining long-range kill shots and close-range melee attacks. To survive in this line of work, you have to sneak your way in, shoot your way out! Use scopes and silencers to conduct long-range assassinations. Use cover and stealth to sneak up on your enemies and perform devastating melee attacks or just blast away! It’s your choice.

Notes: I always love Glu games and the first Contract Killer was a lot of fun. This sequel is still free to play and it has a lot of new gameplay features.

4. Zombie Driver THD

Description: Insane mix of cars, speed, explosions, blood and zombies! Fight through an epic narrative campaign or test yourself in the Slaughter and Blood Race modes. Engage huge bosses, save survivors, drive crazy vehicles such as a bulldozer, fire truck or even a tank and smash everything in your way. Take part in the Blood Race tournament – chase other cars and take them down without mercy on brutal racing tracks. Jump into the Slaughter mode and survive as long as possible on specially crafted arenas.

Notes: Exclusive to Tegra powered devices.

5. Family Feud & Friends

Description: Survey Says: Play the Ultimate Social Gaming Experience on the go! You can now experience exciting Family Feud competition together with Facebook friends and other Family Feud & Friends players as you try to name the most popular answers to survey questions posed to 100 people. Challenge your friends, family, and the larger Family Feud & Friends community, with built-in social features that enhance the game experience for all players.

Notes: This one is for Clark and Angie, who love this game show.

6. Zombiewood

Description: Light up the silver screen with non-stop action as Zombies invade Hollywood! Zombies have invaded Los Angeles; the once glitzy and lavish streets – lush with movie stars and celebrities – are now overrun with hordes of the undead. For some it spells terror, fear, panic… infection – for others it’s an opportunity to light up the silver screen, roll camera and shine! It’s time to bust some guts and wreak explosive havoc!

Notes: Always a fan of dual-stick shooter games and killing zombies is a plus.

7. Meganoid 2

Description: Survive tombs, temples, traps, bats, snakes and much much more. The sequel to the much acclaimed Meganoid! Meganoid 2 continues the brutal platform gaming that all you guys loved in the first part. Again: this game is not easy! You will need to bring your best game skills to complete the short but hard levels.

Notes: This game is not easy. Supports WiiMotes, and a host of bluetooth controllers, just connect and play.

8. Theme Park

Description: Create a rich fantasy world filled with playful attractions, toy-like interactions and goodie-filled shops! The best-selling Theme Park series is back! Build and interact with unreal roller coasters and rides, featuring lush eye popping animations. Make them run faster for extra cash! Restock shops and repair rides while your perky patrons enjoy your park. Then upgrade your rides and shops to watch the cash roll in (Theme Park Cash, that is)!

Notes: I was always a fan of this series when I played PC games, and I’m glad to see it on Android.

9. Penny Arcade’s Rain-slick 3

Description: A cunning evil Doctor, a series of Unexplainable Thefts, a Mysterious Book of Power and Enigmatic Supernatural Forces conspire to push our heroes onto a Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness! Take part in the epic saga of Tycho Ephemerous Brahe, scholar of Apocalyptic Studies turned detective, and his entirely human partner Jonathan Gabriel as they confront unspeakable evils that threaten New Arcadia, the world as we know it, and possibly the very idea of reality itself!

Notes: This version includes the original game released on Steam and XBox plus The Lair of the Seamstress DLC and Fanfiction packs built-in.

10. Chain3D

Description: Chain3D gives “a twist” to the tired genre of match 3 games. Goal of the game is to remove all the colored blocks. You decide where to place the next block. The entire Cube builds up from the center, if you sever a block’s tie to the center, the block will be removed. With a little practice and luck, you can explode the entire cube with a few well-placed blocks near the center cube.

Notes: Puzzle game of the week.

11. Downhill Xtreme

Description: Tear past the competition on a fierce ride to the finish line in the World’s first longboard racing game, Downhill Xtreme! From the creatives behind the Hockey Nations series and Football Kicks, Downhill Xtreme launches you through a whirlwind of exotic locations and sets you against all challengers and the clock in an adrenaline fueled race to the bottom. Speeding through tracks of volatile twists and turns, progress from amateur racer to professional longboarder by conquering new destinations and tougher races, collecting money and prizes along the way.

Notes: Bonus pick. Free to play.

12. Crazy Machines THD

Description: Experiment and build your wacky contraptions like never before! In this “Rube Goldberg” style puzzle game, experiment and build your wacky contraptions with physics action like never before on the mobile platform! Dazzling visuals of explosives, fire, and true to life physics behavior when you put the experiment into motion!

Notes: Another bonus pick. This one is exclusive to Tegra devices right now.

Looks like a lot of really good picks this week. I can’t wait to try them all.

It’s been ages since I last played Chrono Trigger, I’m sure I never got all the different endings… might pick this one up and see what kind of ending I get, as well as the new content.

Also curious about the Penny Arcade game.

    • kazahani

I can’t see videos from my work computer, so I don’t know if this is a port of the original SNES game or if it’s the reworked game that they released a few yers back on the DS. Either way I’m getting this if they support the GNex.

Hopefully this is successful and they port over Chrono Cross as well!

  • Heetskore

I wanted to get Chrono Trigger but my phone isn’t compatible…Thanks a lot Square.

    • Nathan J

So pick up one of the Super NES emulators (I use Snes9x EX, it’s totally free for all features) and play Chrono Trigger that way. Probably takes up less space. The Android version is a straight up port, as far as I know. Although it’s honorable that you want to throw $10 at Square Enix.

      • http://www.focuszonedevelopment.com Homncruse

Keep in mind that unless you own the original cartridge, running it via emulator is illegal. So if “honorable” means “not pirating a very worthy game with hours and hours of gameplay and fantastic replay value”, $10 is more than worth it. Every other iteration of the game has cost more than that. Hell, you’d be lucky to find the original cartridge for <$30 these days, and it's 17 years old.

        • kazahani

Only problem with that is that Square didn’t bother to support his device. I would have no qualms about using an emulator to run the game, as long as the person fully intends to purchase it legitimately if/when their device becomes supported.

        • Jaime

I thought the whole “it’s illegal unless you own the game” disclaimer was just BS that ROM distributors put on there to make themselves feel better? Do you have any sources for this info?

P.S. Not trying to attack you, I’m genuinely curious. I’m the same Jaime that posts on your blog and follows you on Twitter. :)

unfortunately my G2 is starting to show its age, ill wait went i get my nexus for to try out these games :)

  • Harmonyflame

Gonna pick up rain slick 3

  • Dylan Friedman

Been playing a bunch of Family Feud lately. Lots of fun.

  • renshin

Chrono Triggers seems like nostalgia to me. After FF 3.

    NFS looks great.

  • TuhGrr

I personally dislike games that constantly try to sell you “upgrades” within the game.

  • Defred34

    “I always love Glu games”.

How can I take you and your game roundups seriously anymore?

    • kazahani

Opinions, dude. They’re all over the internet.

    • theviper21

There are definitely some fun Glu games. Whether or not you agree with their freemium pricing model is one thing, but they definitely have some fun games.

      • thel0nerang3r

In my experience, the first couple of levels are free. After that, you do need to spend money to progress. Nothing wrong with that, after you’ve played a few levels you can decide if it’s the game for you. Then, you can either pay or stop playing. I don’t get the hate for these types of games.

        • kazahani

Me either. As long as they are up front with you that the game is not free. I’ve gotten frustrated when I installed a game which I thought was free-to-play, but then after a few levels they wanted $4 from me to keep playing.

Looking for new games might give contract killer a shot!

I just can’t understand why need for speed is not supported on the Transformer Prime…. Weird…

  • STEVEN

Family Feud was really bad. You dont get credit for your answers unless they are exactly worded as the app. For example, for one survey question they had the answer as BREAKFAST and I entered MAKE BREAKFAST and I got a strike. Also beware that to play games you need to earn or more likely buy coins.

Chrono Trigger was an immensely rewarding game when I played it on Super Nintendo. This will make hour-long subway rides pass super quick!

  • Broseph Stalin

Odd, NFS Most Wanted isn’t compatible with my Transformer TF300, even though it has a Tegra 3 just like the Nexus 7. Does anyone know why?

  • Nathan D.

Best looking racing game I’m seen to day.Other games are nice to, good to see some odd games ported into android.

Wow just wish I had a Tegra Powered device.

  • Nathan J

Wasn’t a fan (it’s turn-based). Still, this is one of the best, and one of the few JRPGs I’ve finished, although I only got the first (of what, 14?) endings.

I hope they port Secret of Mana. I have it on emulator but would buy it (again, I had bought it on the Super NES when it was new) to support them. It’s just a great game.

The indications games from Android and Me are making the internal space of my smartphone end!! Only excellent games
