Sprint Galaxy S III Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update available now

Samsung-Galaxy-S3-tilted

The race to be the first US carrier to update their Galaxy S III to Android 4.1, Jelly Bean, is officially over. As of this morning, Sprint was the first to cross the finish line in offering the latest major Android update to S III users on their network.

Not long ago, Samsung released a statement telling US Galaxy S III users to expect an update to Android 4.1.1 in the coming months. In the past, that meant you had at least a month to wait — if not closer to three or four. But here we are, just one week after Samsung’s announcement, and Sprint is already sending out the update to Jelly Bean to S III users everywhere.

Android 4.1.1 for the Sprint Galaxy S III will include access to Google Now, expandable notifications, Android Beam, automatic widget resizing, camera enhancements and more. Of course it won’t be stock Jelly Bean, but Samsung has added some useful features in the latest version of Touchwiz.

No word yet on when we can expect Jelly Bean to hit other carrier-branded devices. We’ll be keeping an eye out. Sprint S III users, have you received the update yet? First impressions?

Been running this for a while now since Jellybean test builds began to leak. It’s pretty awesome. Smooth, fast, and everything you’d hope’d it would be. The other morning I forgot to set an alarm, so at 5am I mumbled “wake me up at 6am” into google now. Just like that, alarm set for 6am.

Haven’t installed it yet, but from what I’ve seen, the OTA version was leaked a few days ago over at XDA. Some users are saying it wiped their internal storage, so any previous backups (note, anything not on an actual micro SD card) was gone. Not everyone had this though, which is strange.

I haven’t yet seen the Google download link, but I haven’t looked very hard for it yet either. I’m sure it’ll pop up soon.

So far the reports have been good, so I’m just waiting for the devs to work their magic and come out with a good ROM to run.

I’ve heard the same complaint for multiple phones. Droid Bionic users are just now getting ICS. I’ve heard several Bionic users complain of ferrying wiped after the update. Heck, I’ve even heard of this happening to iphones (far more common is the whole “my contracts list is gone” complaint). Seems like it’s a crap shoot any time you update your phone, ever.

I have Verizon. Who wants to bet that Verizon will be the last carrier to get Jelly Bean?

sounds awesome. Is there any information about the update for the international versions?

After teasing its customers with support docs of the Jelly bean update for its Samsung Galaxy S3 variant for a couple of days, Verizon announced the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for the Samsung flagship smartphone yesterday.
