ASUS unveils Padfone 2, no US availability announced

Today ASUS announced the new Padfone 2, but just like the first device, it does not appear to be coming to the United States. The unique product once again combines a smartphone and a tablet, this time with a faster quad-core chip, LTE-equipped smartphone and a completely redesigned tablet.

ASUS Chairman Jonney Shih said, “Our relentless drive to innovate through our ‘Design Thinking’ philosophy has empowered us to create PadFone 2. It’s beautiful, it’s fast and, best of all, it’s intuitive.”

The PadFone 2 will be launched before the end of December in Europe (Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, and Sweden) and Asia (Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and U.A.E). Availability in other countries will be announced at a later date.

Highlights of the Padfone 2 smartphone include:

  • Android 4.0 (upgradeable to Android 4.1)
  • 4.7 inch 1280 x 720 HD Super IPS+ display
  • 1.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro chip
  • 16/32/64GB internal storage, 2GB of RAM
  • 13 megapixel high-performance camera, 1.2 megapixel front camera
  • ASUS SonicMaster technology and audio tuning by Waves
  • 42Mbit/s DC-HSPA+ and 100Mbit/s LTE
  • NFC, WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0
  • 2140 mAh battery
  • Weight: 135g

Highlights of the Padfone 2 tablet station include:

  • 10.1 inch 1280×800 display
  •  5000 mAh battery
  • ASUS SonicMaster technology and audio tuning by Waves
  • Weight: 649g

Overall, it looks like the Padfone 2 could have about every spec an Android nerd could hope for. It’s unfortunate that the device will launch with Android 4.0, but ASUS should be providing an upgrade soon. We should also note that there was no mention of a keyboard dock for the tablet station.

ASUS has already uploaded the entire launch event video, along with a trio of product demos. Check out the clips below and let us know what you think of the latest creation from ASUS. Would you buy the Padfone 2 if it comes to the US?
