Samsung to announce the Galaxy S III Mini tomorrow, leaked specs suggest an underwhelming device

While rumors of the LG Nexus seem to be getting all the attention these days, Samsung hopes to make a big splash tomorrow with the unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S III Mini. The event is schedule to take place on October 11th in Frankfurt, Germany. According to Samsung Mobile’s JK Shin, there is significant demand “in Europe” for a smaller version of its flagship phone.

Up until now, speculation suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S III Mini would feature most of the high-end specs found in the current S III, but new details revealed by MobileGeeks indicate that Samsung is taking a much cheaper phone and simply labeling it with its Galaxy S branding. While the leaked image of the device suggests it will look very similar to its big brother, specifications of the Samsung Galaxy S III Mini are said to include a 4-inch Super AMOLED 800×480 display, 1Ghz dual-core STE U8420,  1GB of RAM and a 5 megapixel camera. MobileGeeks expects the phone to sell for â‚¬399 (roughly $510) when the device goes on sale later this fall.

Honestly, we’re hoping that most of there details turn out to be wrong. Samsung has the opportunity to create an amazing device with a 4-inch display which could outclass the iPhone 5 and beat it on price. If these specs turn out to be true, do you think the Samsung Galaxy S III Mini will be a success?

I am actually looking forward to ge a 4inch device. In todays androidy world, nothing is less than 4.5 inch screen. With a decent config, this would be a very welome addition to Sammy’s arsenal.

    • Paul

Agree I dislike all these massive phones, 4.3″ is ideal, or 4.5″ if the bezil is small.

I thought my GNex was huge coming from the Original Droid, but I quickly got used to it.

  • Prince77

    One word……..NOPE!!!!!

    • Prince77

Not with the specs that a rumored to be coming on there.

  • Paul

4.8″ is just too big, but 4″ is too small. Saunsung should do what Motorola have done with the Razr I, make a 4.3″ screen on a 4″ phone.

    • Graham

Its supposed to be a “mini” for all those apple fans that wont accept anything other than the “perfect” 4″ form factor.

      • pjamies

        I smell Lawsuit by apple…
They will claim that the 4″ screen size is stolen from their
iPhone5. You need to go to 4.3″
I cannot belive that Samsung would go back to pissing off
        Apple again.

        • Dags -

          Erm… the original Galaxy S had a 4″ screen.

  • Jeffroid

Ideally, same specs as S3. With 4 inch screen, the phone will be smaller and so will the battery capacity. Hopefully battery optimization will be carefully examined and we will have a wonderful device.

I believe everyone will think the same.

Would it be just a Galaxy Mini 3?

  • Froojr

Last paragraph should read ‘…most of their details…’ not ‘there’.

  • jamal adam

If there is such a demand that warrants Samsung releasing a smaller Galaxy S III, I would expect better specs, I know that those customers would too.

  • David

Maybe making a powerful phone in a small package is harder than it looks. Maybe Samsung isn’t up to the task. Very unimpressive.

    • http://htcsource.com Nick Gray

Samsung could pull it off if they wanted, but I’m sure they don’t want to pull attention away from the SIII since it’s doing so well.

  • Paul Atreides

I think it will sell. The main gripe for people seems to be with the GS3 size. This could pull those people in line.

    Samesung…boring…Galaxy A$$ III Mini is a fail

  • yowanvista

That device seems overpriced for those specs, especially the low resolution

  • c1liu

I agree that samsung should make some flagship 4” phones. I personally own the tmob version of the S2 which has a 4.5” screen, and I used to have the Vibrant, which was 4”, and before that the mytouch 3g, and I have to say that my sweet spot is 4”, not because I think a 4” screen is better than a 4.5”, but because the 4” phone feels better in the hand, and after using both, I’m surprised myself but I have to say that I’d rather have a phone that feels better in the hand with a slightly smaller screen.

  • JS_215

If they put actual S3 specs in it I think they could strike gold and rival the iPhone 5. Now I think this might sell ok, but it is severely underpowered as it stands now.

  • rauelius

Between this an the Galaxy Players, it appears to me that Samsung has absolutely no respect for you unless you’re will to spend top dollar.

  • shadhussain

pack in a HD screen on that one and it’d sell.

  • MyMilan

If this phone is legit then shame on you samsung! I agree with MobileGeeks that this phone sounds like a much cheaper phone (probably one with a high profit margin) that samslum just slapped the ‘galaxy s III’ name onto it so that potential customers would be attracted to it. Only a samslum fanboy would be interested in this phone. A TRUE galaxy s III mini would have much higher specs and just be smaller in size. This phone does not meet that criteria. This phone is also around 200.00 over priced for what samslum is offering. This phone is a major fail if the article is correct about what it will be. I got all excited when I saw the name “galaxy s III mini” but the low specs and overly high price took all the wind out of its sails, (or in this case ‘sales’).

  • renyo

I don’t know about the latest Samsung devices, but last I saw the the Note with ICS, Samsung had a very buggy Android. It doesn’t matter if Samsung releases a lower end phone. If they can keep it bug-free and smooth, I think a lot of people would buy it.

  • NeoJesus

    Too many models.

Samsung should just focus on 2-3 models.

    • DroidRocka

I gave NeoJesus a vote up just for the profile pic alone, now I forgot why I’m on this page

    • Dags -

You’re right. it must suck being the largest smartphone manufacturer in the world using the strategy of making models for all markets.

  • Max.Steel

How are those specs underwhelming?? People are spoiled these days.

    • ChrisLH

The initial indication from Samsung was that the specs would be similar to the GS3, hence the disappointment. That being said, real world performance is what matters, so maybe it will really shine despite the lesser specs.

      • http://htcsource.com Nick Gray

The processor is OK, but a 4-inch screen with a 800×480 resolution is really disappointing. Its as if Samsung has extra screen left over from the GSII that it wanted to get rid of. This device is inferior to the Verizon DROID Incredible 4G LTE which as a 4-inch qHD (960×540) display and a more powerful processor.

If the leaked specs are true, you are exactly right – they will have missed out on a great opportunity to beat Apple at its own game – A smaller phone which performs at least as well as the iPhone 5. Plus, using “Mini” minimizes the iPhone 5s increased size while basically stealing “Mini” out from under Apple just prior to the iPad Mini announcement. Throw in the GS3 branding and you have a real winner.

Also, they would have been the first manufacturer to truly hit three different sizes with high-end phones (Note 2, GS3, Mini), basically covering all of their bases with top of the line/best in category products.

Unfortunately all that is lost with a mid-range device and now you’ve cheapened the Galaxy S3 brand. I’m hoping the reports are wrong.

  • NasLAU

One comment I’ve heard is that the S3 is great but too big. Even from Apple fans. A 4″ phone with S3 specs could win some of those people over. As it stands, thus device will not.

  • kwills88

If Samsung had beef up the specs on this it could have been a massive hit, the main appeal of the I phone is its smaller size at this point, put the galaxy s3 specs in a smaller screen and Sammy would have won this hands down.

  • JIW

I personally know at least a half-dozen people that would be all over an SIII with a 4-inch screen (including me — for my wife). This is essentially an Atrix 4G from Q1-2011.

I really hope the leaked specs are wrong :(

    • http://htcsource.com Nick Gray

The official announcement is out. Specs are the same as this leak. :(

  • stenzor

You can’t put a GS3 in the name and then have shit specs.. it will just devalue the brand… Shame on Samsung if this rumor is true

    • Dags -

Sure, which is why the specs are almost certainly wrong. Or correct for a new Samsung phone but not the GS3 mini.

      • stenzor

I hope you’re right.. we’ll find out tomorrow though.. Rumours the day before the announcement are not usually too wrong

  • Nathan D.

I’m more of a powerhouse person so no thanks.

  • ruperto17

I think 4″ – 4.3″ is the sweet spot. I’ve been asking for a high end device in a small pkg for a long time.. hope this is it!

  • birdman

Wow can’t even put a qHD screen in it?

There are still a lot of people who love smaller screen phones. I’d actually be interested to see a 3.5-inch device with a qHD display and a dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and Android 4.1.
