Android Rookies: 10 new apps worth checking out this week

New apps need lovin’ too, right? Every day there are thousands of new entries on the Google Play store, but many go unnoticed and never receive the attention they deserve. We have shown in the past that this community can discover great apps and launch them to new heights, so we’re bringing back our weekly column Android Rookies that highlights new apps with less than 100k installs. Browse our new Android app picks below and let us know which ones you enjoy.

Google Santa Tracker

Pitch: Celebrate the holiday season with the Google Santa Tracker app for Android. Santa’s developer elves have created this app to follow Santa on his December 24th journey as he delivers gifts to children all over the world.

Pitch: Make all your cloud apps work as one. Get push notifications and discuss your work as it happens. Works with Google Drive & Calendar, Dropbox, Evernote and 20+ other productivity apps.

Pitch: ÃœberConference is the easiest and best way to make conference calls. Simply choose contacts from your address book and your conference will be created instantly. Participants don’t even need to call in, as they will be dialed and/or sent an email invite to join.

Deep Sleep Battery Saver

Pitch: Deepsleep battery saver constantly puts the device to deepsleep mode while screen off. During deepsleep mode, Wifi, 3G are turned off, background apps are stopped. Therefore, most apps are not working, including Facebook, Google Service, etc,. It then constantly wakes up in order to download email, sync Facebook status, etc,.

Pitch: Diaro is designed and focused to record activities, experiences, thoughts and ideas throughout your day and browse diary notes from the past in the easiest way using List or Calendar views. Powerful search allows to find entries by any keyword in the title or text and filter results by category or tags.

Pitch: Booksy is a learning-to-read platform for young kids (4-9). It is designed from the ground up to help young children, Pre-K through 2nd grade, practice and develop their reading skills. Think of Booksy as training wheels for books. It gives kids independence and security while providing help and support.

Wave Alarm

Pitch: With Wave Alarm, you never have to touch your phone to silence or snooze, just wave off the alarm! No more fumbling around for your phone in the dark just to turn off the alarm, a simple gesture and Wave Alarm will silence or snooze it for you!

Pitch: Sitegeist helps you to learn more about your surroundings in seconds. Drawing on publicly available information, the app presents solid data in a simple at-a-glance format to help you tap into the pulse of your location anywhere in the United States. From demographics on the people and housing to the latest popular spots or weather, Sitegeist presents localized information visually so you can get back to enjoying the neighborhood.

Pitch: Sync.ME magically update your contacts. Keep your contacts updated with their pictures and information from Facebook (birthday, status, address, website, company & job title).

Beer Citizen

Pitch: Beer Citizen is an advanced tool for true beer fans to discover, review, and share the brews you drink from around the world! Our review system allows you to identify and quantify the intensity of individual traits observed in a particular beer. As more citizens review a beer, review data is used to build an aggregated beer profile. Now, instead of relying on 5-star ratings or reading page after page of written reviews, you can quickly see in great detail what the entire community thinks a beer is like, and decide if it suits your personal tastes before you buy it.

Sync.ME looks enticing. I might have to try that out.

    • J3R3MY_H

      Also give haxsync a look.

      • LukeT32

Have been using HaxSync since January… Works awesome.

        • r1ch

I stumped up for Haxsync while running CM10 on my old HTC Sensation, it does work well.

I might try Sync.Me though, it’s free and i’ll want to know how it works to recommend or help friends with it.

          • r1ch

PS. This list isn’t just for Rookies!

    • Zeratoda1

I’m liking the wave alarm no longer do I have to look at the screen, it’s the little things that matter

      • LukeT32

That’s hot over sleeping written all over it…. If you don’t have to consciously turn it off how do you not sleep over.

        • Sean the Electrofreak

Indeed. I use Alarm Clock Plus, and to get the alarm to shut off in the mornings, I have to answer a math problem like 73 – 38 + 14. That’s surprisingly difficult when you’re half-asleep, but it’s the only good way I’ve found to get me to wake up.

    • ArticulateFool

I used to use with ios. It did its job on that platform.

      • Andesken

The app synchronizes quite well, although it fails in some cases. For example I had to freeze the app because it always was coming down in deep sleep mode and the battery consumed me in no time. Even tried putting manually sync but kept active all the time. See if you can check that. In fact if I use manual sync any form is active all the time. I hope to fix that detail because it is very good app.

  • acidone

Booksy looks neat will have to put that ton my daughters Nabi2 .. Thanks!

    • eioous

Agreed. definitely gonna have to put Booksy on the tablet.

    • Jessica Abbruzzese

I am sure she will love it! There are a lot of neat features also for parents where you can hear your child reading out loud through a recording. Let me know if you have any questions. If you like it check out our facebook page for more apps.

  • Rene Rendon

Sync.ME does look interesting. Always find something interesting in these lists.

  • Kevin Amundson

A Holo themed Diary app! Yes!

  • Shazam

I’m going to check a couple of these out right now. Thanks.

  • tylerfoy

There are a couple apps here I think would come in handy. Thank you for the informative post!

  • ranwanimator

Hojoki is a neat idea but I’m a little too “tin-foil hat” to let one app access all of my stuff.
Definitely downloading the Santa tracker for The Boy.
Sitegeist would be cool if I ever went anywhere.

    Thanks for doing these Taylor.

    • jaxidian

I’m thinking the same thing. Hojoki sounds like a great idea when using my cloud accounts for work, but I’m not sure I trust it with my work’s cloud accounts. It’s tough for new/little guys in situations like this to get off the ground and it’s tough for me to trust said companies. That’s too bad….

  • nikhilverma

I’ll make sure never ever to download wave alarm. Lazy people like me are gonna sleep for eternity.

  • classic_hero

I’ll try the battery saver since I could always use more power.

    • Trevor Cameron

I couldn’t agree with you more! The biggest glaring flaw with our phones right now is battery life. Whenever I try to argue with Apple fanboys, they point to battery life and there is nothing that I can say in defense.

Thanks Taylor, love this section it’s such a great way to discover new gems!

      • tanman888

Once you have installed this app (or any other battery saver app), the next argument Apple fanboys will use is the battery management tool should be native!

    • raichleb

I’ve had good luck running Juice Defender (another app I found because of the Android Rookies column) on a Galaxy Nexus. In fact, I found it so useful that I paid for the upgraded version.

  • mm14

Need 4 Speed Most Wanted just went on sale for 99 cents!

    • Twister_69

Thanks for the heads up =)

  • bdub

    Sync.ME and Sitegeist look promising.

  • damambt

I wonder if the Santa Tracker somehow utilizes NORAD?
Cant believe an entire year has almost gone by.

  • Brian Horstmann

    Anyone use the Deepsleep yet?

“It then constantly wakes up in order to download email, sync Facebook status, etc,.”

that line sounds like it would make battery life worse.

    • Martin

You choose how often it should sync. It’s an awesome app.

  • fletchtb

Will definitely be installing Santa tracker. maybe bookset too.

  • sachin_goral

Help: Installed deep sleep batt saver but in my ME profile it shows no apps from android and me site.

  • mattcoz

    Mmmm, beeeer.

  • romy134

    gonna give a spin

  • dacatalyst41

I’m excited about this battery saver!

  • thechad

Wave Alarm looks like a great app to use if i want to be late for everything and get a lot more sleep. Way to easy for me to snooz. Wave my had, I can do that without ever being awake. I need an alarm app that makes me enter like a 15 digit code that changes everyday or makes me recite the constitution to get it to shut off or snooz

    • nobara

Same thoughts here. But you can always put your phone 5 meters away :)

      • cjleines

I remember I saw an alarm clock that made you enter the solution to a math problem if you wanted to snooze. It was a brilliant idea, but I can’t remember the name.

**just went on the play store, and you can find tons of free ones by searching “math alarm clock” lol.

  • mipd1980

Installing Booksy on my TF101 and Nook color for my daughters to play with. Might give Sync.ME a try, looks promising for all contacts.

    • Jessica

Great! Let us know if she enjoys it! If you need help contact us. Visit our tipitap facebook page for more apps to download. Cheers, Jess

  • datiecher

Hojoki is a really nice idea but I’m not comfortable enough to give my credentials to them in order for the service to work.

  • exilis

Booksy looks like it could be just the thing for my wee lass.

And who doesn’t like a good santa tracker!

  • A.Woodbury

Liking the idea of Also enticed by wave alarm, might have to go back o sleep to try that one out!

  • Viequense

Wow some neat apps coming out. It can only get better.

  • thekaz

Definitely going to check out Booksy.

I did download Beer Citizen a week or so ago, and have been a bit underwhelmed. I think the community needs to grow more before this becomes more useful. I do wish it could provide beer advocate ratings, but I am guessing beer advocate would come out with their own app if they were interested in that.

I’d also love an app that would let you scan a beer barcode and give you info/ratings on it. Or better yet, take a snapshot of the box/bottle and be able to id and give info on the beer…

  • auronblue

Beer Citizen looks very similar to Untappd. I’ll have to check it out.

  • uknowme

I put Sync Me on my wishlist. I will check it out when I get my Nexus. That is now my last worry about leaving Sense behind. I found other apps to do everything else Sense does.

  • GE918

  • sylvan

Intrigued that everyone seems interested in Sync.ME. My first thought was ‘my phone already does that’. But I’m one of the few here that likes and uses HTC’s Sense.

Agree that Wave Alarm seems like a bad fit for sleepy me; I need a harder snooze, not easier!

  • Thomas Biard

Santa Tracker is a must for children.
Wave alarm looks good but I have never needed an alarm outside the stock alarm on Android. I am a light sleeper :/
And time to look into SyncMe

  • surg3d

Love these Rookies posts. Found some good gems here.

  • dpleus

A very eclectic collection of apps this week. For me, Sitegeist is the most appealing, but everyone is different and others will appeal to the. As such, I have a co-worker that is big into craft beer, so I’ll let him know about Beer Citizen.

  • raovallab

Beer Citizen could come handy !

  • texasfan

anyone have good experience with ÃœberConference? Looks interesting.

  • alexanderharri3

DeepSleep seems like it might be useful, but JuiceDefender already works wonders and I’ve got the plus edition with tons of features.

  • nobile

    Cool list! Tanks :)

  • TheyCallMeZ

All of these apps look great, Going to put the Santa Tracker on my MK802 so the Kiddos can see it on the TV :)

  • jefflarkin

I need to try deep sleep, I’ve been having a lot of battery issues recently.

  • ordio

Thanks for the list! May have to try a couple of these.

  • crossbred900

I’m going to check out Hojoki and Booksy.

  • mario_1603

    I like Beer Citizen :D

  • arminla

Has anyone tried out Hojoki? Seems promising.

  • ndub21

I was planning on grabbing Google Santa Tracker after I read about it yesterday but Wave Alarm is a new one for me. Sounds very cool since I have such a hard time hitting the right button to snooze my alarm in the morning when I’m still half asleep. The worst is when I think I snoozed my alarm but really turned it off. Then I’m late to work…

  • gregdv

Sync.ME seems interesting not sure I want a 3rd party with my contacts, Im gonna have to check out their privacy policy first

  • dcortright

I’ve been waiting for a good contact sync-er!

  • Dradien

As a father with young children that loves to use my tablet, Booksy looks promising. Thanks!

  • dafi81 is really nice!

  • DroidPower

haha, love the idea from Wave Alarm. Though I think it’ll make me be late more than usual since all i have to do is wave at it to shut it off or snooze! btw, thanks for another good round of apps!

  • Jorge Eslava

I’m going to try that battery saving app, sadly your battery can never last too long with smart phones.

  • Monsunami

Wow, this list has some great apps.

  • aBax

Wave Alarm could come in handy. I’ll try it out, thanks!

    • Lee Swanson

The alarm I have right now starts really quiet and gradually gets louder. I wonder if Wave Alarm has that functionality.

  • Hall Lo

Diaro looks elegant :) and the Little Things Forever is sooo beautiful!

  • af13

I don’t consider myself a rookie, but I haven’t heard of most of these. I guess it’s time I start paying closer attention cause these look pretty good.

    • Taylor Wimberly

That’s the point. I try to dig up apps that most people have not heard about yet.

      • Futureboy

And you do a great job. You consistently bring us some quality new apps. The Android Rookies column is easily my favorite feature here. Thanks for the solid work.

  • jonstle

Great List of Apps! There are several here that I am really interested in.

We put the Santa Tracker app on our tablet so our kids can check it and track him, which they are already trying to do! Super fun for them.

Hojoki – seems interesting and useful but I always worry when one thing has access to all of my other accounts. If it got hacked I am screwed.

Booksy is going to get a serious look too. I have young kids so anything I can do to get them into reading is a plus. Now I just need to find a Mathy, and a Sciency. LOL

Beer Citizen is going to get a look as well. I love to make and drink different varieties of beer. Always looking for new and unique flavors.

Those are my favorites but I am sure I will check all of them out because Mr. Wimberly has a great track record in finding great apps. I have enjoyed looking at some of the older articles and have replaced many of my “go to” apps as a result.

    • Jessica

Nice to hear you are going to download Booksy! The kids are going to love it! We have other apps that you can check out as well. Also, Mathy and Sciency ones may be coming your way soon. Let us know what you think about Booksy! Cheers, Jess

  • sunrise

Beer Citizen made me crave a beer.

  • thaghost

I think this is the best collection of rookie apps you’ve assembled. So many new apps to try out. Thanks!

  • rbcameron1

  • melan26

  • dacevedo

  • Eben1277

Just grabbed diaro and deep sleep, I intend to get booksy for my daughter, we gave her my wife’s old a855 after she moved up to a newer phone. Might check out My droid x used to do that automatically, but its a pain in the ass to get my gnex to sync all the photos correctly, and I don’t get the status’ like I did with motoblur.

  • WlfHart

I can’t believe I had never heard of deep sleep before… looks awesome!

  • smeghead68

Must get santa tracker! Kids would love it.

  • smeghead68

Wave alarm sounds kind of neat. I wonder if deep sleep has one touch on/off.

  • Nwemo

Might download that deep sleeper battery saver, just to make the most of that extra bit of juice!
BookSy seems quite interesting, shame I’m not surrounded by little people to test it out on!

  • soohoonyu does look exciting. Others.. not so much. The alarm app will probably cause me to skip school everyday..

  • ccn_cristi

Wave alarm seems interesting but my phone doesn’t have a front camera :(

  • Luke Haviland

wave alarm is a bad idea for me
    the beer app looks wonderful

  • aryin

all i want to say is… deep sleep wins the naming convention category =)

  • Eric Wilborn

Passed this along to some users that need it.

  • Frank Burns

In wake of the increased shootings across the globe, I think Google Developers could create an app, much alike a (“panic-button”) that, with proper self-explanatory videos, could teach children when to activate the app.
This will undoubtedly alert law enforcement agencies to a particular problem.
Children and teens would need to understand the penalties for a false alert, again, with video training this could get help fast.

  • jenskristian

    Love these articles!

  • Ilyse Rose

The santa tracker is pretty awesome. The rest of the list is great, too, but i love cute stuff like that.

  • Laurel laurel25

Deep sleep looks interesting. I may have to try that one out.

  • luis maldonado

Can you guys do a post that details the latest best and cool looking widgets for our phones and tablets?

  • unwiredmedic

Thanks for sharing. These tyles of posts are a great way to introduce the newest apps that I may not have found otherwise. Please keep them coming. I hoped to check out Booksy, but it isn’t compatible with my phone :-(

  • gregdv

Getting a tablet for my niece Booksy would be great for her.

  • Kent Burton

  • klcow92

  • naypalm

Beer Citizen is a realy cool app, I’ll have to use this when I visit the local bar/brewery.

  • Chris Jones

Lol that Santa tracker was off compared to the santa tracker on Uverse – lets say it started a long conversation.

If I used the wave app I wouldn’t ever get up.

  • zippyioa

My 3 yr old loved Santa Tracker :)

  • freddiefan

Wave alarm sounds great. Used Santa trackert on Christmas eve. Was a great success with my daughters. Thanks for these lists, extremely useful.
