Looking to break away from the mess of news that comes out of CES every year, Asus has taken the normal press release route to announce a new product over the weekend that’s sure to have frugal shoppers everywhere delighted: The $150 7-inch MeMo Pad.
The Nexus 7 has impressive internals for $200. So how was Asus able to knock $50 off the price of the incredibly similar MeMo Pad? In short, a downgrade in just about every way imaginable. The MeMo Pad comes with a 7-inch 1024 by 600 display, a 1-megapixel front-facing camera, 1GHz single-core processor, Mali-400 GPU, 1GB of RAM and a base storage of 8GB. A 16GB model is also available. To further differentiate the MeMo Pad from the Nexus 7, it’s also a bit thicker and a bit heavier, but comes in multiple colors and features SD expansion.
Asus clearly isn’t going to win any spec wars with the MeMo Pad, but price wars are a different story. If Android 4.1 is able to run well enough on the MeMo Pad, specs won’t matter. The fact that you just spent $150 on a fully functional Android tablet from a well known manufacturer will.
The Asus MeMo Pad will be released in select markets starting this January, with US availability expected by April.Show Press Release
