Rumor: Next Nexus 7 to feature full HD display, release at I/O

Over the last several years, Google has established a yearly release cycle for Nexus phones. So it stands to reason that Nexus tablets will receive the same treatment. The first Nexus 7 was released at last year’s Google I/O, which means that about three months from now, we should be seeing a follow-up device. Today, we get our first rumor on just what that device will come with and when it will be released.

According to the hot-and-cold rumormonger Digitimes, Google will be working with Asus again for the next Nexus 7, which will boast a, “full HD resolution and an industrial design with a thinner display boarder,” along with, “Google’s upgraded Jelly Bean-based Android operating system.” Additional information from the source included a price range of $199-$249, and a May release date.

Digitimes has often been wrong in the past, but they’ve been right too. If we break this rumor down, we can see that most of it makes sense. If Google were to release a new Nexus 7 before fall 2013, I/O, in May, would be a great time to do so. And a higher-resolution display would be more affordable now, so it could be included without driving up the price of the Nexus 7.

The only part of the rumor that’s questionable is the redesign mentioned, and the OS. Matias Duarte was very proud of the fact that the bezel on the Nexus 7 was designed a certain way. Mimicking a book made it comfortable and easy to hold. According to the rumor, Google will be shrinking those bezels. And then there’s the OS the new Nexus 7 will reportedly run, an updated version of Jelly Bean. While it’s certainly possibly that Google won’t make the jump to Key Lime Pie yet, last I/O is when Jelly Bean was announced. It would be odd if no new major version of Android was detailed at this year’s I/O.

What do you think of the new Nexus rumors? Do you plan on getting one?
