The upcoming HTC One is the best looking Android phone in a long time, but it could have a challenger later this year. French blog Nowhereelse.fr has just leaked several images of a new device called the Huawei Edge that boasts an aluminum unibody design that is just 6.3mm thin.
Rumored specs of the Huawei Edge include a 4.9-inch 1080 x 1920 display, quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, 13 megapixel camera, 16/32GB internal storage, and a 2600 mAh battery. The device is said to ship with the latest Android 4.2 and arrive sometime in the second half of this year.
If all the specs are true, it will be an impressive feat for Huawei. They somehow managed to create an all aluminum phone that is thinner than the HTC One (6.3mm vs 9.3mm), and they crammed in a higher capacity battery (2600 mAh vs 2300 mAh).
Richard Yu, Huawei Device Chairman, hinted at an upcoming smartphone in a recent interview with Engadget. Yu said, “Our other product, coming next quarter or end of Spring, is far ahead of Samsung in terms of build quality.”
We don’t know which device he was referring to, but these leaked pictures certainly match up with a device of the highest build quality. Yu went on to say, “Actually, when I was at the Düsseldorf International Airport last time, the security pulled this phone out of the box and kept asking ‘Where to buy? Where to buy?’ All the officers from the other seven or eight security lines all turned around! It was love at first sight for that guy, and he said he’d give up his iPhone and pick this one! That’s what I aim for when I develop products.”
Huawei has quietly climbed their way into the 3rd largest global supplier of smartphones, but most American consumers are not familiar with the brand, and the ones that are struggle to pronounce their name correctly. (Hint: It’s WAH-WAY)
Hopefully we will be learning more about the Huawei Edge in the coming months. I have never carried a Huawei smartphone as my daily phone, but I would easily pop my SIM card into the Edge when it becomes available.
