Mid-range Samsung Galaxy S4 mini announced

samsung-galaxy-s4-mini

With the Samsung Galaxy S4 currently outpacing the competition in the high-end smartphone landscape, Samsung has now introduced the Galaxy S4 mini – a mid-range smartphone for those who prefer a smaller device at a lower price point. While the name may imply that the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini is simply a miniaturized S4, the device specs are a far cry from what you’ll find in Samsung’s flagship Android device.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 mini sports a 4.3-inch qHD (960×540) SuperAMOLED display, 1.7GHz dual-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage (approximately 5GB of usable space),  support for 64GB microSD card, 8 and 1.9 megapixel cameras and a 1,900mAh battery. The S4 mini measures 124.6 x 61.3 x 8.94mm, making the device significantly smaller than the 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm size of the Galaxy S4.

On the software side, the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini will be packed with many of the same features that were introduced by its larger sibling. The device will run on Android 4.2.2 with the latest version of TouchWiz which features Shot&Sound, S Travel, Story Album, Group Play, ChatOn, Samsung Hub, Samsung Link, S Health, Adapt Display, Adapt Sound and much more. The more advanced features from the S4 like Air View, Smart Scroll, Smart Pause, Smart Stay have been omitted.

Samsung isn’t quite ready to talk about pricing or launch dates quite yet, but members of the press are expected to get hands-on time with the S4 mini at  the Premiere 2013 GALAXY & ATIV event in London on June 20th.

Is the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini the mid-range device you’ve been waiting for or is the rumored HTC M4/One mini a more appealing option?

Exactly. Gone are the says when mid-ranfe phones are complete garbage. A couple of these specs are actually better than the iPhone. It’s always great to have CHOICE and that’s what Android gives us.

It’s still a good mid range phone – far better than the old days when you got “top specs” or “garbage”. Would be nice to get a high speced device below a 4.5″ these days though for the small handed.

Why why why 8GB though? 16GB of storage so the device can actually store something without nearing space threshold and slowing down…it’s so cheap to double this…

I’m waiting to see if the HTC One mini (if it is even announced) will feature. Rumors suggest it will have a 720p display and the same aluminum construction as the HTC One.

    • Co1e

I would have to go with the One mini as well. A smaller lower resolution screen would probably increase battery life, which is one of my main complaints with space phones these days.

  • g

So they’re just reselling the galaxy s3 with a new name? Sounds about right. Got to check out my friends s4 yesterday and it’s just as bloated and laggy as my vibrant was. If you enjoy Samsung products, you have very bad taste.

  • Web and Other

Seems like Samsung is making it a practice with the mini series. It works well with people that want a good phone at a lower price range.

  • scubabum

After the S3 –> S3 mini, I guess that we should expect this S4 –> S4 mini announcement.
A win-win for the consumers with many great choices from Samsung.

  • ionorov

God damn it! All these knucklehead manufacturers can’t seem to grasp the idea that there is a market for smaller flagship devices. Smaller phones should not mean lesser specs!

By all means, put in smaller 3.5″ to 4.5″ 720p screens. Maybe reduce the battery to make it fit.

But don’t bloody scrimp on the CPU/GPU! Don’t cheap out and put an inferior camera! Don’t stick a barely visible TFT-LCD from 2003! Don’t hobble it with a paltry 8GB of storage! Gah!

Is it too much to ask for a literal S4 Mini? Or a HTC One mini? or Xperia Z mini?

You know, a no-compromise, top-of-the-line hero phone.. just with a smaller screen and battery? Sigh.

    • EdH2Os

I couldn’t agree more, why not offer a smaller phone with the exact same specs as the flagship. There are some folks out there who are not enamoured with large phones.

  • jamal adam

A 4.3″ screen is considered mini, I guess it just means that a lot of consumers love the larger screens. I would definitely like to see HTC’s M4, that’s been rumored.

  • donger

Not bad, screen size and superamoled is a plus.

  • Adnoxaei

It’s almost exactly midway between an S2 and S3 in specs…I wish they’d have just shrunk the S3 to 4.3 inches. I can live with the “mini” version being a generation behind, but this is almost two generations behind in Samsung’s own product line :/
