Chromecast hacked to run original GameBoy emulator

The new Chromecast is a nifty device, and while it doesn’t do much out of the box, it’s plenty useful for the low price of $35. It can stream Google Play, YouTube and Netflix content. Soon it will do much more. It can also mirror a Chrome tab from a computer. But as everyone knows, tinkerers won’t be satisfied with that.

One person got a GameBoy emulator running on the Chromecast. Using the cloud to load a game ROM, and a computer for sending input, he demoed Mario Land on the device. With what he claims is near instantaneous input and around 50 frame per second graphics, I’d say it’s a pretty big success! And with a cat, the video is bound to be internet gold.

This is just the start of what is possible with the Chromecast. Cloud-based functionality both limits the device and gives it so much potential, because processing can be offloaded to other devices. We can’t wait to see what other clever things people will come up with. Stay tuned for more cool tricks! All the code and instructions are in the source link if you want to give it a try for yourself!

If they are already doing this with the ChromeCast, I am on the edge of my seat for an actual Google TV device.
