The future of Google Voice is here: voice calling available now in Hangouts

hangouts

There’s been a lot of noise made over Google’s transition from Talk to Hangouts. Hangouts was supposed to be Google’s all-in-one communication service, but has fallen flat. It greatly improves the Talk experience across the web and mobile platforms, but there’s still a lot of work to do. Today, Google has begun chipping away at that work by adding voice calls to Hangouts, hailing the move as the beginning of the future of Google Voice.

Rolling out now, users of Hangouts in Gmail, Google+ and those using the Chrome extension will be able to hold voice calls with other users. Placing a call will be as simple as using the phone icon in your Hangouts window. Multiple users can be added to the same call, using either just voice or video. Calls to the US and Canada are free, and international calling is relatively inexpensive.

No details have been shared on when or if the Hangouts app will receive an update including voice calling, but we hope it’s right around the corner. As Google has said, this is only the beginning. By the end of the year, we’d love to see one app for messaging, sms and all of Google Voice available for every Android phone. Google is headed in that direction, it’s only a matter of time now.

It would be awesome we had carriers that offered data only plans and we could use something like Google Hangouts for all our voice and messaging needs!

then they would loose too much money–besides, I find Google hangouts to be totally useless as I don’t even know how the hell its supposed to be used.

Really? I like using it instead of the stock messaging app with my wife. But I don’t use it besides with her.

        • Morten

          I don’t have any friends either ;D

          • SIne

same here, hangouts with wife but there is some issues with app on android when i am on data, dont want to call every time

        • MisterLee

Same… my wife and i both LOVE it. but only use it with each other…. everyone else isnt as cool enough i guess lol

      • Vance

        Yah… technology is hard.

Verizon sort of does that. With there new share everything data plans unlimited text and talk are included…. Obviously your still paying for it but you don’t have to worry about taking to much anymore…. Now just worry about data.

I’m still refusing to upgrade and keep my unlimited data.

Good! These messenger apps are making a mess of my homescreen

Now if I could only make all my friends to get a gmail account…

I personally uninstalled hangouts and google talk and installed Xabber instead. I just wanted a chat client and I don’t need a chat client that has rights to all my sms and all the other zillion permissions that hangouts now demands. Especially in light of their full blown cooperation with the illegal NSA wiretapping I am choosing to move away from many Google services where it is reasonable to do so.

I sure hope you canceled your internet and phone service as well. Also while you’re at it, if you’re that scared of being tracked, get rid of anything that is GPS enabled, and also all of your debit and credit cards too, and don’t go in to any public place.

      What are you hiding…?

Stop paying taxes too, and don’t get a job. Also wear a mask….

I hated hangouts, it does not even include all my google + friends, I can never see who is actually available. Google has to do a much better job on this app. Urgently.

  • vforvortex

So voice calling is available “now” , but the app update is “right around the corner”? So i have it in theory right? :D

  • Joshua

Old news….Kakao talk has been allowing instant messaging and voice calls forever and blows Google hangouts out of the water with awesome emoticons you can download.

Google needs to just buy them and copy it all!! And at least it’s available worldwide whereas the Google voice part is still only available in limited countries.

  • surg3d

Just really looking forward to not having to use the Google Voice app anymore.

    • clocinnorcal

Yeah, me to. It needs so much work it’s not even funny. I love it for Vmails but the lack of batch options sucks.

I am hoping they integrate Google voice into the stock dialer and sms app in 4.3 or 5.0… It would be awesome…

  • Lauren

That’s great – I just hope they come up with a replacement so I can see my carrier’s voicemail in a Google Voice alternative too. I like it because it’s free, where all these other voicemail apps are subscription based.

  • Brian

I was super excited for the Hangouts integration, but I actually sort of miss Talk. Only because it seems like a lot of my messages don’t get to people when they’re not online to receive them, where Talk would have turned them into an email to be viewed later. I’m finding I can’t rely on Hangouts to communicate with friends…

  • Brandon Harris

I’m still hoping for MMS integration.

The forward-to-Email thing is nice . . . when it works.

Good for them, but I’ll keep using my unlimited minutes and save my 4GB of data.
