Meet Android and Me: Nick Sarafolean

To some people, I’m known as the Gentle Giant, professional nerd, or Nicki among many others. But to most, I’m simply known as Nick, a tall guy who loves all things coffee and tech. And yeah, that sums it up pretty well. I also like to tweet pretty much anything that floats through my mind. (Follow me. @Zricon15). Some of that stuff includes (predictably) tech, coffee, photography, music and other miscellaneous things. Now to jump into my actual life.

Simply put, I’m a high school student. Approaching my senior year, life is becoming busier than ever but I’m still managing to cram most of what I want into it. But let’s back up a few years. My tech addiction really got started in ninth grade when I got my first smartphone, a Samsung Fascinate. But then, it was just an interest. I really liked the phone and all but it hadn’t become an integral part of my life yet. My first foray into the blogosphere was when I began to watch some of the YouTube videos that were coming out of PhoneDog. I grew interested in them and began to read the articles on the website. Eventually, I joined Twitter and began to follow the people who wrote for the site.

Being only a young teenager, there wasn’t much that I could do at that point. I didn’t have a job and couldn’t get new phones nearly as often as I wanted because of that. Nonetheless, I borrowed a family member’s upgrade and after exactly a year with the Fascinate, I graduated to a DROID RAZR. I began to get more involved in the blogging world and began to get to know some of the people who would later become my coworkers. By the beginning of that summer, I’d finished my sophomore year of high school and just turned sixteen.

It was at the beginning of June 2012 that I saw a call for a news editor at DroidDog.com. Thinking that this was at least a chance to get my name out there, I shot Joey an e-mail to let him know that I was interested. Imagine my surprise when I was offered a position as a news editor at DroidDog. Sure, it was unpaid at the time but I’d made it into the field and that was what mattered to me. I continued to write throughout the summer until school resumed and I had to drop a routine schedule. Throughout the school year, I pitched in if help was needed and I was around while occasionally writing up an editorial or review.

This summer, I began a regular shift at DroidDog again. But after just a few short weeks, Android and Me was bought by PhoneDog Media and we of the DroidDog team transferred over. And here I find myself, now a part of the incredible Android and Me team. In complete honesty, I would have never thought that I’d be working at Android and Me someday. I wasn’t even sure that I’d still be in the tech field for this long but here I stand, still a part of this thriving community.

Now you know a little bit about me and how I got into this whole tech blogging thing. Unfortunately, I don’t have the time or space to go into much personal detail, but please know that I do indeed have a life outside of the internet. In the coming months and hopefully even years, I hope to continue getting my type on with Android and Me and continue to provide you guys with content.

What I’m most excited about

College. There’s not even an ounce of doubt about that. In an interesting turn of events, I have actually become the single kid in my grade at the private school that I attend. Due to that fact, I became an honorary senior last year which has begun to make this year feel as though it’s entirely unnecessary. Of course, it’s not at all unnecessary but once it’s over, I’m headed straight down to Georgia to study business. Lest you think I don’t care about the site though, I’m also extremely excited about that. Delivering custom content right to your internet doorstep is one of my favorite things to do and as such, I’m very excited about doing just that.

What I’m going to be doing with Android and Me

For now, I’m going to be mostly writing news. I’ll occasionally throw in an editorial or review to shake things up, but my main focus is pumping out news for you early risers in the morning. When summer winds down to a close, we’ll see what happens with my schedule. I’m hoping to at least get some news writing in during the school year.

What devices have I owned?

Surprisingly, not too many. Just listing in chronological order: Samsung Juke, Samsung Fascinate, ASUS Eee Pad Transformer, Motorola DROID RAZR and a Samsung Galaxy S III. And yes, all of the phones have been on Verizon.

What phone do I daily drive?

At the moment, I’m using a Samsung Galaxy S III on Verizon. I picked it up in October of last year and haven’t really found a reason to get rid of it yet. Speaking software, I’m currently rooted and running a stable version of CM10.1. That’s a very recent acquisition though and before that I simply ran stock TouchWiz with the occasional launcher. However, when the HTC One comes out on Verizon, there’s a very high chance that I’ll be picking that up to replace my Galaxy S III. If not that, then most likely the next iPhone.

Me (4)

Facts about me:

  • I’m ridiculously tall at 6’5″ and still growing. That’s where Gentle Giant comes from.
  • I’ve recently discovered that I have a passion for coffee that’s quickly spiraling out of control.
  • Outside of Android and Me, I run a small photography business.
  • My taste in music is extremely diverse as long as it’s not hard rock, metal or most country.
  • I’ve been playing the piano for around nine years now.
  • I love playing video games. My heart nurses a soft spot for most things Valve.
  • I’m probably the only teenage guy that I know who watches both zombie thrillers and chick flicks. I also have a thing for singing shows such as American Idol or Glee.
  • I have an infectious laugh that occasionally causes me to break down into laughing fits because I’m laughing at my own laugh. Yeah, it’s that bad.
