Republic Wireless wants to help pay for your Moto X, and charge you $5 a month for service

Moto X (9)

Republic Wireless has been around for awhile now in cell phone industry time, trying to make a dent in big carrier policies by offering cheap handsets with even cheaper plans. They’ve yet to see a whole lot of success thus far, but now they’re really upping the ante.

Announced today on their community blog, come November Republic Wireless will be selling the Motorola Moto X for $300 with plans starting as low as $5 a month. So how are they able to charge $300 for a normally $650 Moto X? They’re going to eat the cost. Republic is so convinced there’s a profitable business model in they way they operate, they are willing to pay for more than half of your device’s cost just to get you using their service. And how are they able to charge you only $5 a month for service? By being a WiFi only VoIP moderator.

Republic Wireless’ plans are based on the fact that most people with a smartphone are around WiFi all day. For $5, you get unlimited everything, but it all has to be done through WiFi. If you can’t get a WiFi signal you can’t use your phone. The way I look at it, the $5 plan is like having a smartphone for a home phone. But one you can most likely take to work and still have function just fine. For just $5 more, at $10, you can get unlimited minutes and texts on Sprint’s cell towers, but no data. Data for the $10 plan is available on WiFi only. The next step up is a $25 plan, which includes unlimited everything with 3G data, followed by a $40 plan, which has unlimited everything with 4G data.

Republic Wireless’ plans do come with a lot of caveats, but there are plenty of people out there who would get along just fine with their plans. Especially with a $300 Moto X. If I could get away with a WiFi only plan, I’d do it in a heartbeat. How about you?

its not a bad idea from a consumer standpoint. I have WiFi at home and at work and anyone I visit has it too. However, there are bound to be important times when you are not around WiFi so the $10 plan makes more sense.

I wonder if they would let you buy the phone and walk out of the store without purchasing a plan.

  • halo0

They say there is NO CONTRACT. The phone must be locked to them or altered in some way so you can’t just buy it and take it home and use it on wifi for free. If not they are going out of business.

  • aantoine87

they dont have stores and wifi is wifi of course you can use it just on wifi, the question is will they be going about this like t-mobile, no contract but u have to pay off phone if u leave

  • Blaw

This sounds so tempting… The $5 plan doesn’t make much sense, but the other plans sound good. The phone is locked to the company. They did the same to the Defy XT.

  • halo0

I wonder if Google Voice would play nice on it?

  • Adi Peshkess

This is interesting because the phone is being offered with NO CONTRACT. However, currently Republic only sells a single phone, which they modify to use on their special “hybrid” Sprint-WiFi network. My guess is that this Moto X will be the same, so that it would not work on other networks (maybe Sprint, but why would you do that?) It certainly won’t work on AT&T or T-Mobile or other GSM/HSPA based networks, and likely not on other LTE networks either. So if you go buy one and cancel, you’re really left with a wi-fi-only phone.

I wonder if it would work, though, if you got the Moto X cheap from them, cancelled service, then got an LTE Mi-Fi from Verizon. You’d need a special app to make phone calls, but it might be worth it.

    • Joe The Android Rooter

Flash it…If that doesn’t work, GSM unlock it…If that doesn’t work, just JTAG a GSM version onto it. I guess I’ll be looking into where I can get one tomorrow…

  • NamelessTed

This sounds like a sweet plan. I looked into Republic Wireless previously but their old plans didn’t seem to fit my needs. If I can get a Moto X for $300 and use their $40 a month plan for unlimited service that sounds like a great deal to me. Pretty similar to other carriers, unlimited talk and text with data being “unlimited” up to 5GB before being throttled. It almost sounds too good to be true but I have signed up to be notified via email.

I just bought a Nexus 4 and really like it, but I might be tempted to sell it and get this baby when it is available. I definitely enjoy the flexibility of not having contracts.

    • halo0

It would be great, IF Sprint has great coverage in your area. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case most places.

      • Beverly

I was so happy to learn about this wifi….cell phone…. but then I heard it was Sprint…. their coverage isn’t that wonderful from what all I hear from friends…. I quit Verizon, and I’m told
if I didn’t like Verizon, I’ll hate Sprint…..I love the idea of WiFi and Cell towers but it may not
        work and I’ll be out the $$$ for the phone……………………..or stuck w a phone that I couldn’t
get service for…….if it is only Republic…..,

    • scubabum

Sprint customers should switch to this Republic Wireless $40 deal if they want the Moto X.

  • bikerrich

I was on Rep for a while last year. Worked fine on wifi, problem was that Sprint is weak in my area away from wifi. And when hurricane sandy hit, the towers were down and wifi out, except, and I don’t know why, my buddy’s metropcs worked ok.. I like the rep concept. No reason why it shouldn’t revolutionize the whole cell phone business. But they do need a better phone selection.

  • redraider133

Even the $40 plan isn’t that bad. Nice to see more of these little companies popping up too bad it is on sprints network though.

  • donger

Interesting. But I’m not gonna be their guinea pig.

  • Dan

I’ve been using RP for 10 months and it’ has worked for me. Most people would find that it’s not worth saving 100$ a month defaulting on sprint. Especially is you’re coming from Verizon or Att

I switched to Republic Wireless a few months back from Verizon. They were killing me with the monthly charges. Around $120 a month. Verizon does have the best 4G coverage. I won’t deny that. I got the Republic plan for $25 a month. Unlimited calls, text and data with 3G. I dont have the 4G on my plan. It takes a few seconds longer for the internet to load compared to Verizon. But for $100 a month savings its well worth it. If you get the 4G with Republic remember you might not have use of it except in large cities. Im completely happy with the plan I have. I have no dropped calls. The switch from wifi to Sprint 3G is seamless. Those commercials for Verizon that show the map show the 4G map coverage only and 3G is pretty much everywhere so their ads are really misleading. It works great. Get the Moto X phone and not the Defy (it sucks). The Moto X rocks. Yes, you will have to pay $299 for the phone upfront but it pays for itself in a few months. Do the math and figure out your yearly cost compared with your current plan. Even if you have to pay an early termination fee it will save you money over the next year or two. I have a link that you can use to save $19 for the first month. Yes, it helps me with my bill too when you do. I won’t lie. For Christmas bonus my boss decided to let most of us go and I am unemployed. If you don’t like Republic, there is no contract. Just switch back. It is a great company.

Here is the link. Cut and paste if it needed. Thanks!!

I have been Republic Wireless for a month now and love them!! I pay $25 a month for unlimited talk, text, and 3G data. You can get unlimited everything including 4G data for $40 a month or you can switch to the $10 a month plan and you get unlimited talk and text anywhere but only can use data on WiFi but you can switch you plan 2 times a month from your phone and the rates are prorated so you only get charged for the days you use that plan!! The Moto X is an awesome phone!! I actually like it better than my iPhone 5 because the phone itself has features that the iPhone does not have (twist your wrist and the camera starts and its a better camera than the iPhone, it knows when your driving and reads you texts, and active notifications are very nice too). I highly recommend this service and phone and if anyone wants to use the service after doing some research use this link and get an additional $19 off:

There are many different links posted above, however all appear to be for $19 off, a program which Republic Wireless no longer supports. As such, none of the $19 coupons are valid today. The new program offers both the new member and the referring member $20 off their service. As such, if you are considering signing up and would like to save a few dollars, you can use my below link or one of the many other $20 off links that can be found be Googling “Republic Wireless $20 off”. Regardless of whose code you use, I must say that I have been a Republic customer for almost a year now, and love the service. I got my first smartphone from them at $29/month for unlimited calling texting and 3G, and have now moved on the the Moto X (again, through Republic) where I fluctuate between the $10 unlimited calling and texting plan and the $25 plan which adds unlimited 3G data. While there is an ocassional kink in the service (I have had two, ever) the community is supportive, and I have found the company to go above and beyond in its attempts to help out customers with warranty situations– even when something is very grey and or probably should not be covered by a warranty.

  4. aantoine87Guest 2 years ago

they dont have stores and wifi is wifi of course you can use it just on wifi, the question is will they be going about this like t-mobile, no contract but u have to pay off phone if u leave

  5. BlawGuest 2 years ago

This sounds so tempting… The $5 plan doesn’t make much sense, but the other plans sound good. The phone is locked to the company. They did the same to the Defy XT.

  6. I wonder if Google Voice would play nice on it?

  7. Adi PeshkessGuest 2 years ago

Flash it…If that doesn’t work, GSM unlock it…If that doesn’t work, just JTAG a GSM version onto it. I guess I’ll be looking into where I can get one tomorrow…

    • It would be great, IF Sprint has great coverage in your area. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case most places.

      • BeverlyGuest 1 year ago

I was so happy to learn about this wifi….cell phone…. but then I heard it was Sprint…. their coverage isn’t that wonderful from what all I hear from friends…. I quit Verizon, and I’m told
if I didn’t like Verizon, I’ll hate Sprint…..I love the idea of WiFi and Cell towers but it may not
        work and I’ll be out the $$$ for the phone……………………..or stuck w a phone that I couldn’t
get service for…….if it is only Republic…..,

    • Sprint customers should switch to this Republic Wireless $40 deal if they want the Moto X.

  9. bikerrichGuest 2 years ago

  10. Even the $40 plan isn’t that bad. Nice to see more of these little companies popping up too bad it is on sprints network though.

  11. Interesting. But I’m not gonna be their guinea pig.

  12. DanGuest 2 years ago

I have had a cell phone for years, Republic is ok, but they do need more phones. The Defy is ok, but the battery is a real problem. I cannot decide between going ahead and getting the Moto X or the Moto G.
