PSA: Here’s your Nexus 5 availability information

Now that the Nexus 5 has been made official, you’re probably wondering where you can get one, when and for how much? Let this post serve as your guide. While we don’t have all the details quite yet, we have enough to help give you a plan of action.

Unlocked, no strings attached

For those of you looking to get the phone off-contract, unlocked, with no strings attached, you can buy one from at least one retailer right now. The Nexus 5 is available on Google Play in black or white for $349 and $399 with 16GB and 32GB storage, respectively. Shipping times on the devices may vary. As of the time I am writing this post, the black 16GB Nexus 5 is listed as out of stock. And the white 16Gb version is listed as shipping November 8. Both of those are subject to change.

We know for sure the Google Play Nexus 5 will work with at least “4G” on AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Straight Talk, Simple Mobile, AIO and more. We also know it will work on Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T LTE. What we don’t know for sure is if you can buy one, take it to a Sprint store and have them activate it. More on that in a minute.

Outside of Google Play, Google says the Nexus 5 will be coming to RadioShack, Amazon and Best Buy. We will update you once the Nexus 5 goes on sale at those retailers.

Official carrier support

Google has been kind enough to announce official US carrier support for the Nexus 5, which is pretty limited. Both T-Mobile and Sprint will be carrying the device.

If you buy the Nexus 5 on a two-year contract with Sprint, you’ll spend $149 after everything is said and done. That will be available November 8.

T-Mobile is only saying that the Nexus 5 will come soon, and has not announced if they will raise the price like they did with the Nexus 4. If you look at Google’s in-depth Nexus 5 information page, you’ll see the device listed at $349, with a link to T-Mobile’s online store. The T-Mobile link is dead, but from the looks of it, you may be able to walk into the carrier and buy the Nexus 5 for the same price as you would on Google Play.

AT&T will not be carrying the Nexus 5, but again, will have no problem supporting it. Verizon users, there’s always next year.

Wrap up

So there you have it. Within the next couple weeks, you should be able to buy the Nexus 5 from at least six different reputable retailers. Personally, if shipping times are good, I’ll be buying from Amazon. Free shipping and no tax sounds like a good deal to me. Where will you be buying from?

So looking forward to you updating to see if it will work on Sprint from the Google Play Store. If not, then I will assume the updating will be the same as the Galaxy Nexus was.

    • Nate B.

A moderator on Phandroid Forums has talked to Google Support and they said the Google Play version can be activated on Sprint!

      • Michel Taddei

No, it can’t. At least not at the Sprint store I went to. Very irritating, done with Sprint when my contract’s up.

    • Dustin Earley

Yeah, it looks like a Nexus 5 purchased from Google Play will be exactly the same as the one Sprint will carry.

There is no place like tmobile for the Nexus 5. Glad to see the Galaxy Nexus from Verizon put out to paste for the junk it really was.

      • redraider133

        *pasture, not “paste”….

Alas poor New Zealand, forgotten in the rush again.

    Dear Nexus 5,
    Remember me fondly,

    Love you,

    • James

I ordered one from the Play store. Get a US VPN, create a new Google account and get it sent to a Youshop address (NZ Post forwarding service). My kiwi bank credit card worked as payment.

      • Brad

What about the billing address? My order got cancelled because it didn’t match what was at the bank.

      • Paul

Where you able to buy an internation version of the handset or just the North American one? Because, if not then I couldn’t be bother dealing with the hassle of going through all that for a North American version of the phone that is not fully compatible with NZ networks. Although, I suppose that you could sort of do the same thing buying it unlocked for the UK and use the UK Youshop from NZ post because that should be the international world version

  • triangle

Just bought one from Play as I need it for traveling internationally. Really excited that I can use this on multiple networks in the US and around the world. Just so excited. Can’t wait to get it!!!

Got a 16GB and 32GB in black about a minute after they were released. However when I view the order, it says the status of the 32GB is “Pre-ordered” while the 16GB leaves the warehouse on November 5th…. I wonder what the pre-order is all about.

    • Ka

Yeah, I’m wondering too. Says the same thing on my 32, yet “by nov 5″ on the 16

    • Sean

Mine is likewise with the 16GB. I ordered mine within 10 min. Let me know what u find out. Just reply to this post and when I find out I will do the same.

    • Randy

I see the opposite. I ordered a white 32GB that shows “Leaves warehouse by November 5, 2013″ and a black 16GB that at the moment shows “Pre-ordered”.

    • Sean

      It Shipped!!

    • Biaviian

I called Google Play support and they said that all phones will be shipped at the same time, from the same order. They weren’t sure why the status said “Pre-order” but assured me that they would all ship by November 5th. I am in a similar boat but I ordered one of each configuration. I only have one that says it will leave the warehouse by Nov 5th and the other three say “Pre-order”.

    • http://youtube.com/patsandsoxfan5 Alex Carlson

Yeah I called and was told that they will just ship together.

  • yoaj

“Aio has made the transition to 4G LTE easy for its customers by sending a free over-the-air software push that has automatically upgraded their SIM cards so they can enjoy 4G LTE speeds when using an LTE-enabled device in Aio’s LTE footprint.”

    • KojiroAK

errrm, the SIM is pretty much only an identifier.
There is no change needed on the SIM-Card side. Not even software.

  • Richard Ahlquist

    Whats the link for;

“If you look at Google’s in-depth Nexus 5 information page”

  • eli brown

I get paid the 15th :( but hopefully best buy or radioshack has it I live 2 mins away from both!

  • Jason Foss

It says specifically on the product page (if you scroll all the way to the right)

    Supported Service
Unlocked: Use with any provider that offers service on Nexus 5 supported networks
    Carriers: T-Mobile, Sprint

    • Mj

So you’resaying iit’snot going to work on GSM carrier AT&T?

  • SGB101

It took about 15 mins for the delivery dates to start slipping in the UK.

    • SGB101

They did, but don’t adhere to it atm. Look up Jeff jarvis on g+, he was raging about his treatment from them.

  • NasLAU

    I’m waiting for Amazon.

  • http://droidsamurai.blogspot.com DroidSamurai

Question: Sprint’s CDMA band 0/10 is used by Verizon also, and Verizon is deploying LTE band 4, does that mean I can drop in an activated Verizon SIM and use the phone, provided I am in an area served by Verizon’s Band 4 LTE?

    • Jason Foss

      Probably not, no.

In order to use CDMA, you have to have the proper binary baked into your ROM. If Verizon isn’t supported, it’s means Verizon’s CDMA binaries aren’t baked in.

    • redraider133

Sadly no because of the CDMA and verizon having to authorize what devices get activated on their network. Case in point: LTE nexus 7

      • http://droidsamurai.blogspot.com DroidSamurai

The LTE Nexus 7 activation problem only affects people without an already activated SIM. If you put an activated SIM in, it will work. That’s why I asked in the first place.

        • redraider133

The nexus 7 also lacks the CDMA used to make calls which is still what verizon would have to allow on their network and seeing how the nexus 5 lacks the CDMA bands verizon uses…. Not gonna happen sadly.

  • phor11

    I’m confused.
Didn’t Verizon sign an “Open Access” provision when they purchased 700MHz spectrum from the FCC?

    • SGB101

They did, but don’t adhere to it atm. Look up Jeff jarvis on g+, he was raging about his treatment from them.

      • SGB101

Just rechecked, on the play store UK, black 16/32 8th Nov ship, the white 16/32 1 to 2 days ship.

  • aranea

Amazon seems like a very good option. Unfortunately I have to pay tax in California.

    • http://nickvettesephotography.com Nicholas Vettese

Almost everyone now pays tax with Amazon. They have to open some type of office in each state, which forces them to collect the tax. Govt Loophole (in the Govts favor)

      • Mj

They just started to add tax in my state. I’m not happy. Takes away incentive to order from them. Plus they quietly raised the amount that qualifies for free shipping from 25 to 35

    • Ankur Rakshit

How much are the potential savings through amazon? I have Amazon Prime hence asking. I will save on shipping but still have to pay taxes in NJ. Also, any idea when Amazon will have it, I am afraid it will pretty much sell out on Amazon as fast as it did on Google Play store.

  • http://nickvettesephotography.com Nicholas Vettese

I bought two of them and without any of the issues from the Nexus 4 disaster… Thank God they got that right. 16G in White and a 32G in Black… Cannot wait!

  • Raptor

The first actually not a junky Nexus

  • mattcoz

Got my order in almost 2 hours ago, but it still says “Pending” and I haven’t received a confirmation email. I’m thinking about cancelling and waiting for Amazon.

    • halo0

Don’t! The last time I did that (with Chromecast) I ended up waiting almost 2 months because Amazon didn’t have them in stock even though they said they did when I ordered.

      • aranea

My chromecast from amazon came very smoothly sans the shipping I had to pay if I got it from google. It took a little bit longer to get the netflix code though. I think I got the code about 1 week later than my friend who bought his from google.

      • mattcoz

Hmm, never had problems with Amazon like that. Mine doesn’t ship until the 8th, so I have until then to see if Amazon gets it. Even if I have to wait a little longer, close to $50 savings is worth it.

        • aranea

how much is shipping? $50 seems too high.

          • mattcoz

Shipping is only $10, it’s the tax.

          • aranea

I see. Well I have to pay tax either way.

        • Ankur Rakshit

How are you counting $40 savings through amazon? I have Amazon Prime hence asking. I will save on shipping but still have to pay taxed in NJ. Are you in a tax free state? Also, any idea when Amazon will have it, I am afraid it will pretty much sell out on Amazon as fast as it did on Google Play store.

          • mattcoz

Yeah, no tax in Illinois. I too am worried about when Amazon will get it and how fast it will sell out there, so I’m holding on to my Play order for a little while.

32gb White Nexus 5 shipping on Nov 8 (Canada)

  • R J

“We know for sure the Google Play Nexus 5 will work with at least “4G” on AT&T”.

The 4G frequency for AT&T is 1700/2100MHz. According to the Google Play store, the specs for the Nexus 5 are 850/900/1800/1900 MHz.

Is there something I’m missing here? Looking at the specs, it seems t me that while you can use the Nexus 5 on AT&T, you won’t get 4G.

    • halo0
    • halo0

And from nexus 5 specs: LTE: Bands: 1/2/4/5/17/19/25/26/41

      • R J

        Thanks for the reply.

Wikipedia (which is not always correct, but is correct more often than not) states that LTE is defined by both a frequency and a band: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LTE_%28telecommunication%29#Frequency_bands

What is not clear from Wikipedia is how the bands are related to the frequency ranges. Can you clarify?

I really have no choice about carrier (I need an unlocked GSM phone for international travel, and the T-mobile coverage where I live sucks), so I have been waiting for this phone. So if I can’t get 4G on this phone with AT&T, that would be a blow :-(

    • ? AndY

Who cares about “4G”? Tell us if it works on each carriers LTE!!! It’s 2014! And given the N4 didn’t support LTE, that’s the info we need. Can’t believe they couldn’t get AT&T to carry it. You’ve got a supposed flagship phone that’s not being sold at the 2 largest carriers representing the overwhelming majority of users.

      • R J

The LTE bands for AT&T are 4 and 17. The specs say that both are supported.

    • Larry Hyvonen

I use Att and receive 4g and 4g lte also hspa+ and 3g and edge

  • David

I just bought mine today @1:30 said nov.8th for shipping…can’t wait

    • Steven

So if you’reon AAT&T, that means you’re going to pay those superhigh subsidized rates even though you don’t take a subsidy, right? No way I’m paying $100 on VZ or AT&T for couple gb

      • R J

Like I said, I don’t have a choice. I require an unlocked GSM phone, and I’m in a dead spot for T-mobile. That leaves me with one option, no matter what the price is.

        • Serge

You could jump on one of the AT&T resellers like StraightTalk.

  • Dan

Ordered the 16GB white to use on Sprint (for now at least) and emails states “ships by November 5″ also paid the extra $4 for 2 day shipping in hopes to have it mid next week! Gonna buy the wife one via Amazon…no tax in Indy and I’m a Prime member so that saves me $40 and then we have the freedom to use on what ever carrier we wish!

  • Gee Whiz

I’ve gotten phones from Sprint on contract in the past but I’ve never gotten anything off contract to use with Sprint. What does Sprint charge per month if I get this phone off contract, like from the Google Store?

  • Tom

How do you know AT&T will not carry it? I’ve been reading conflicting stories about this.

  • Mj

Bad Att for not carrying it. I’m thinking of using it with an Att lte sim on straight talk. Can’t beat 45$ for 2.5gb but wanna be assured it works & want hands on with device

149 on contract is a lot. 50 less than iPhone despite being half the price? Does the Play version work on all these carriers

T-Mobile will probably probably screw up again. They don’t act as an UNcarrier at all. Even after the 5 release tonight T-Mobile is still listing the Nexus 4 for $489.99..more than the 32gb N5..so go figure

    • vforvortex

Ya they did the same thing for the Nexus 4. jacked up the price, the girl at the store kept advicing people to just buy it from the google store. i dont get the point of it.

    • Michael

It’s interesting how many Americans seem so confused by an unlocked phone.

This phone will work with any carrier that operates on the bands that this phone has radios for. In the US, it’s T-Mobile, AT&T, and Sprint.

Interesting, it looks like if you activate on T-Mobile or MetroPCS, you’ll be able to connect to both LTE and HSPA+ 4G networks.

  • vforvortex

bought the black 32gb model, says will ship on nov 8th

  • memo203

Can the Nexus 5 work on Boost Mobile?

    • Frank Gomez

I just got mine, and I’m a bit pissed. Apparently a SIM card is required and you can’t get SIM cards anymore And even if you did it looks like SIM cards aren’t supported by Boost. I guess I’ m going to quit Boost and go with Straight Talk :(…

      • Michael

That doesn’t sound right… Boost operates on Sprint’s network, right? So, it should work!

  • GreenGriffin

I’m in New Zealand so was always going to be waiting a while before getting it, but got lucky and a friend has picked me up a 32gb black version in the UK.
Good upgrade from my GNex (which unfortunately won’t be getting the KitKat upgrade)

  • donger

  • tetracycloide

I decided not to buy in the first 20 mins to save some money with amazon before remember a few hours later that amazon now charges sales tax in my state :(

At least I’ll still save a couple bucks on shipping and get better cash back…

  • CJ LaFleur

All 16gb versions are already sold out. Only 32gb models left, but it will be 2-3 weeks before they ship. Google please stock better.

    • tetracycloide

I see 2-3 weeks for the 16gb versions right now and last night they were up to 4-5 weeks for several hours so I think they’re actually doing pretty well on stocking if the estimated ship dates are getting sooner over time.

  • lifeyourlive

will buy from amazon, I hope they will ship to Slovakia with no VAT

  • mattcoz

Wow, the site said it would leave the warehouse by the 8th, but it’s already been shipped and it’s going to be in my hands on Monday!

  • Juancho

Best Buy will be selling it for 2x the Play store price so I don’t see Amazon being any different. :-/ Hopefully I’m wrong.

  • Jack

How can Google have 3-4 weeks delay on the Nexus 5 – it has ONLY been launched a couple of days!!!

Is this another screw up by the big G?

  • Michael

I don’t understand why it isn’t showing up on Amazon – even if only as a pre-order.
