Samsung announces Galaxy Round curved display, features to go with

Samsung Galaxy Round 4

Just hours after a mysterious curved Samsung smartphone was leaked, Samsung made the announcement that it would be called the Galaxy Round. The curve is no ordinary curve, but one made with a real Super AMOLED flexible display. While the Galaxy Nexus had a straight display under its curved glass, this device has a true flexible display wrapped around that curve. While it’s not the perfect use of flexible displays, the technology is finally here!

If you thought it would be another gimmicky low-end phone like the Galaxy Camera, you’re wrong. It’s a gimmicky high-end phone! It’s basically a Galaxy Note 3 in a curved package without the S Pen. It has a 5.7-inch 1080p Super AMOLED panel, a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage with a microSD slot, 13MP camera and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. It’s nearly identical to the Note 3 (even down to the faux leather stitched back), but unlike the Note, it has a slightly smaller 2,800 mAh battery. However, it has a few extra tricks up its sleeve.

To make the round form factor more than just for better grip, Samsung created a few new software features for people to use. Roll effect will allow you to check the time and notifications simply by pushing down on one side, tilting the display towards you and automatically lighting the screen. Gravity Effect allows for controlling the UI by tilting the device. And Bounce UX lets you control the music by tilting the device left and right to change tracks while the display is off.

Unfortunately, most of us might never have a chance to own this device in our country. For now, the Galaxy Round will be exclusive to Korea. It will launch in Luxury Brown, with more colors coming soon after. Would you ever buy one of these? Does the idea of flexible displays under inflexible glass shaped in interesting ways intrigue you? Leave a comment!

Show Press Release
Seoul, Korea – October 9, 2013 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today introduced GALAXY ROUND, the world’s first curved display smartphone. Samsung has been a mobile display innovator by introducing color TFT-LCD, AMOLED, and Super AMOLED flexible display for its mobile product. With this pioneering curved display technology, GALAXY ROUND blends the latest smartphone screen innovations with unique design features. The sleek and thin Samsung GALAXY ROUND which equipped with a 5.7” Full HD Super AMOLED with 7.9mm thick and weighs 154g offers a comfortable hand grip feeling to user, and exclusive experiences of curved display.

As a result of its unique curved design, users can take advantage of round integration experiences like the Roll Effect that enables user to check information such as date, time, missed call and battery easily when home screen is off, and the Gravity Effect for creating visual interaction with the screen by tilting the device. For music, the Bounce UX enables users to control their music. When the GALAXY ROUND’s display is off while the music player is running, a short press to the left of the device will play the previous track while a short press to the right will play the next track. For pictures and videos, the Side Mirror feature enables users to gain access to list of the album content with a left and right tilt.

The large screen size of the GALAXY ROUND provides additional benefits to users. Useful One-Hand Operation features bring a user’s most desired controls closer to a preferred side of the screen. The device enables enhanced multitasking capabilities that allow users to fully utilize the larger screen through Multi Window, a feature that enables users to open more than one application on the screen, run simultaneous multiple instances of the same application or to easily share content between applications.

I wish they went a little bit further and made at least part of the device bendable. There are many gestures that can be incorporated even for very little bend or squeeze.

This is probably what was “Rumored” as the Special Edition Galaxy Note 3.

    • Kyle

Very possible, or we still might (and hopefully) will see a google edition/nexus version of the note 3.

Not that I can afford those phones are use them on verizon, but the ROM would be nice.

So what advantages does this permanently affixed curve glass have? A bendable display has uses – what about this? I’m confused who this product is for, am I the only one?

  • bleh_zero

The Galaxy Round is just a way to get mass production of flexible OLED panels so the price can come down on them.

I guess I’d have to see it in person, I didn’t think I’d like the curved galaxy nexus but it’s still one of my favorite phones (using a nexus 4 now) I do wish Samsung stuck with that nexus look and feel, I’m not a huge fan of the s3 or s4 designs

  • MrMrMan

I think this curved screen would be better off used on the Galaxy gear.

What this really means is that you’ll never need a screen replacement and these warranty companies will be bucks up on this device vs Apple iPhones. Where they break or the cheap aluminum die cast back bends and breaks before the screen does. Yeah… being synonymous with quality is long gone. The new premium quality king of smartphone components Samsung!

Who does just idly claim to have “Perfected Plastic” they had nothing to do with perfecting in the first place. The only thing Apple can now claim is that they buy their best parts from Samsung. But Apple is never content to merely claim to use the best parts…. they’ve got claim they’ve invented them in the first place and we all know what a crock that is!

Like their unbreakable fingerprint technology HACKED in just days. Then iScratchGate and iBendOverEasyGate die cast aluminum only went to further that Apple was moving to cheaper components in as effort to sustain Profits. They also needed to keep market share rising in the face of Samsung blowing their doors off this year like last year. This year it will be to the tune of a 2 to 1 ratio Smartphone sales advantage. Samsung is on target to sell well over 300 Million smarterphones vs Apple’s 150 Million Smartphones Worldwide. While reducing Apple’s primary sales down to only beint in the US market. Which is now #3 in the World in smartphone sales to India and China!

They’ve failed to secure a deal with China Mobile and haven’t even made a real dent in the #2 smartphone market in India. Both are smartphone markets that now blow America out of the water in sales volume alone. The China deal can’t be fixed no matter what the fanboys say by iPhone 5c or 5s merely having a chip capable of using their still un-launched LTE on China Mobile. Because w/o full phone phone radios and 3G support (that’s necessary for activation) on China Mobile with a full custom made model, it’s impossible for Apple to market these phones there. Mostly because almost 100% are non-subsidized Pay As You Go Android devices sold to Chinese consumers at full price. Especially since China Mobile has adamantly refused to pay Apple’s carrier subsidy fees! ….or is that extortion fees?

The people that rail against Samsung for offering more model choice, while also asking for more n better models usually just as blind as Apple’s own fans, to the hypocrisy of fewer models Apple offers. As if being fewer is a better choice for their own consumers in in an almost fascist like run “less and simpler” is better for YOU business ethos. Instead of allowing them to make all their own choices for what they want!

This Galaxy Round will fill a niche market “needs and wants” for just a small segment of consumers. But what it does in getting Samsung’s name in front of people’s faces is far more valuable. Until they get screen production up to speed of their Revolutionary YOUM AMOLED Screens. That are not only more durable using flexible Willow glass like LG is doing. But underneath is the real technology innovation. With transparent capable Super Amoled flexible touchscreens, that for the first time ever incorporate a single atom graphene layer to demonstrate true unbreakability. LG simply doesn’t have the R&D funds and labs to even come close to what Samsung has done!

Another revelation is in the fact that the polycarbonate plastic in Samsung’s phones is all ground up developed in their own Cheil Chemical and Industry labs. Where they’ve been doing both industry leading R&D and making Space Age Plastics for 60yrs!

Polycarbonate is but one, but their latest Infino Brand PC is lightyears ahead of the competition with full flame retardant, heat resistant, environment friendly, flexible, durable Plastic Fantastic like we’ve never seen before. With clarity rivaling crystal glass and incredible colorability to go with that. That’s why it’s the choice of leading car makers around the globe going into body parts as well as other parts. Even Bugatti relies on Infino Brand PC in making their lightweight, ultra durable, flexible Removable convertible roof as….. the REAL PERFECTED PLASTIC!!!

With the main benefit being not having to use far heavier glass that would fail to protect the driver in a roll over. Samsung therefore is the real King of Innovation in this World!
