Moto Maker coming to Sprint Moto X Nov 11, wood backs still on the way

moto x featured

The most disappointing thing about the Moto X wasn’t the mid-range specs, or the price, or even availability. It was the lack of Moto Maker for anyone other than AT&T customers. Sure, if you were on Verizon, T-mobile or Sprint you could still buy the device. But those crazy color combos and welcome messages were reserved for Ma Bell only. Thankfully, it looks like that’s finally coming to an end.

According to some leaked promotional material obtained by Android Central, it looks like Moto Maker will be coming to the Sprint Moto X on November 11. If we had to guess, we’d say the custom phone service should be coming to other carriers and unlocked devices around the same time. Earlier rumblings pointed towards widespread availability closer to the holidays, so it looks like everything is going according to plan. [1]

Also absent from the Moto X launch were real wood backs which are apparently coming soon as well. Evleaks has posted a picture that shows the ability to get a Moto X with an ebony, teak, rosewood or bamboo back for an extra $50. Hopefully before the end of the month, anyone on any carrier can get any color Moto X they want, even wood. [2]

Now that the Nexus 5 has launched, the Moto X has some stiff competition in the stock Android race. But custom colors and always-on voice actions could keep the device ahead of the pack. Is this the news you’ve been waiting for, or are you all Moto X’ed out?

Any word on whether or not the back is replaceable? Like could I buy a wood back to replace an existing plastic back?

Would like to hear when Verizon is going to get Moto Maker. Supposedly it was supposed to be the beginning of November.

Nexus 5 is out why wait for Moto X?

    • zel

Nexus 5 doesn’t have the required bands for verizon. :,(

    • GCHQ officer

yes, especially with Moto X being backdoored by NSA. Its an american-made espionage device. Dont buy!

  • Georgemonavie

Moto X all the way can’t bet the lowered price for what you get..and ever review I have seen is all positive!

    What about for T-mobile?

So I am the perfect candidate for this Nexus 5 / Moto X debate. I’m currently holding an iPhone 4 (I know, i know…) and I’m making the jump to Android. I’ve been all about the Moto X since I read the little features it has (touchless control, active display, etc.). I’m waiting on these wood backs to come out before purchasing but the launch of the Nexus 5 has me interested as well. Can anyone tell me if the Nexus 5 has the touchless control of the Moto X? “Ok, Google Now…” from a distance. And if it has active display?

    • Sean Brody

The Nexus 5 has touchless control

      • Billy

Actually, the N5 doesn’t have touchless control, at least not like the Moto X. The screen must already be on/active .. it isn’t always listening and able to activate from ‘sleep’ mode.

Not to discount the N5. Both amazing phones.

How about the active notifications and “assist” modes (driving, sleep, meeting)? Any word on those? Or any mention of when the X gets KitKat?

          • Sal

No active notifications, need an LED screen for that.

          • Billy

No. I don’t think it has the assist features either. It also won’t have the active notifications due to tech differences.

Moto says kk is coming but no date announced. Other people are saying within 60 days… but it is all speculation.

I haven’t seen anything on whether N5 offers trusted bluetooth (another X feature).

You are a smart man. If you had to guess, when would you say I could buy a wood back Moto X 32Gb on T-Mobile?

Also, how do you feel about the wood back in general? Is it a little too Williamsburg?

  • Bill

i think the wood back will give it a sophiticated look like no other phone. With the usable features, form factor and looks, it is a very nice phone hat would be very comparable to iphone and i hink better than the Nexus 5. plus Moto has reported to already be working to get KitKat soon

  • BuzzMobile

Hmm.. Moto X would be nice with colors :)
btw the Moto G is on its way so maybe it would be a good idea to wait a little more.
