Samsung’s first Galaxy Gear smartwatch was running Android, so it was fairly simple for developers to get started creating apps for the device. With the new Gear series, Samsung has dropped the Galaxy name and Android OS, opting for Tizen instead. This means making apps for developers will be a little more complicated.
To make it easier for developers, Samsung has now released the Tizen SDK for wearables. Devs can start creating apps for the new Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and Gear 2 Fit at their own pace before the launch of the three watches. We can’t imagine them having all that much developer support, considering that the Galaxy Gear wasn’t much of a success, but any push for wearables is a positive one for the market.
If you want to try your hand at building a smartwatch app, hit the source links for the SDK itself, along with Samsung’s guide for the SDK. It’s available for Windows, Mac, and surprisingly, Ubuntu. If you’re a developer, do tell us if you’re at all interested in building apps for the new Tizen-powered Gear line!
