OnePlus One Phone Smash promotion now live

oneplusonewhiteaam

When OnePlus officially revealed its One smartphone earlier this week, it teased that interested consumers would be able to apply to smash their existing device in exchange for 1 of the first 100 OnePlus One units. That program is now officially live and accepting applications.

The OnePlus One Phone Smash program asks that anyone interested in a device apply to smash their current smartphone in exchange for the opportunity to buy a 16GB OnePlus One as well as 3 invites to buy the device that can be shared with others. Applications will be accepted through May 2 and winners will be notified by May 6. It’s worth noting that only the following smartphones are eligible for the Phone Smash program:

  • Apple: iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s
  • BlackBerry: BlackBerry Z10, BlackBerry Z30
  • HTC: HTC One (M7), HTC One (M8) HTC One max
  • LG: LG G2, LG G2 Pro, LG G Flex, LG Nexus 5
  • Motorola: Motorola Moto X
  • Nokia: Nokia Lumia 1020, Nokia Lumia 1520, Nokia Lumia 925, Nokia Lumia 920
  • Samsung: Samsung Galaxy Note II, Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Samsung Galaxy S III, Samsung Galaxy S 4, Samsung Galaxy S5
  • Sony: Sony Xperia Z, Sony Xperia Z1, Sony Xperia Z2, Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Another tidbit that’s worth taking note of is that only people that are 18 or older and live in a OnePlus One launch country can apply to the Phone Smash program. The eligible countries include:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Hong Kong
  • Italy
  • Netherlands
  • Portugal
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Taiwan
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

Finally, OnePlus warns that you shouldn’t smash your phone until the company reaches out to you about your application.

While getting a OnePlus One for $1 is a pretty awesome deal, asking consumers to smash their phone in exchange for a cheap device doesn’t seem like the best promo I’ve ever seen. Perhaps OnePlus could instead select 100 applicants and have them donate their phone. If you truly, desperately feel the need to smash your device in exchange for a cheap OnePlus One, though, you can find the application for the Phone Smash program right here.

ebay sellers of water damaged / non-functional phones will make a small sale opportunity.

    Who’d smash a working phone?

  • Robert

    Stupidity

I had a “perfectly good” broken Nexus S is my draw waiting for this moment. Not smashing a newer working phone. Hope the phone is better than their promotions.

  • gmaninvan

It would be one thing if they had you smash a useless or old phone, but to smash a flagship or modern smartphone is just wasteful and unnecessary.

I mean, I could go out and smash my Nexus 5 but that is so unfathomably stupid. Someone could really enjoy that phone if I am to win a new one. Instead, it just adds to the trash in the landfills. This promo should be changed to ‘donate your phone to less fortunate to win a oneplusone’

  • redraider133

Or you could just sell your phone, and have enough to buy a one plus and probably have some money left over. Not really worth it to smash any of the phones they have listed

Please guys, don’t smash your phones. Donate them, sell them, whatever. Don’t be wasteful.

    • Bart

Yea, I’m with you Dima. There are enough people already uselessly destroying phones in a faux-science claim to be doing research. Like the guy with the rifle–I mean, seriously, how many people are going to be subjected to a situation where there phone gets taken out by a rifle? Maybe someone on a SWAT team. Or how about the guys that put their phones through absurd torture tests that no real user would ever dare attempt.

Let’s make sure we explain this. All naysayers above, you got it all wrong.
Sure, you can sell your current device simply buy a OnePlus One — and sure, just donating your device would be better. I’d prefer it.
You guys are missing one important detail, the OnePlus One will only be available for purchase, initially, through invitation – so it’s either you smash, and get one for $1 or know somebody who’s willing to invite.

Personally, unlike you. I now see this as a business opportunity of my own. The giveaway is for 16gb. If rather sell that. Use one of my invites for a 64gb. Sell remaining invites for a profit ☺️

    • Tito Cruz

And I get to make a practical marketing video of the device meanwhile already putting my broken Note II for good use.

Also, important to note: there’s a list of devices that are eligible to be smashed.

I was excited for this, until I saw the ‘eligible’ phone for this program. if whatever they claim “the past” is only about a year, then i dont know what they consider future.
