Swarm check-in app from Foursquare now available

As promised, Foursquare’s new Swarm check-in app is now available on Android.

Swarm is the new app that will provide the check-in functionality that’s long been offered by the Foursquare app. The new Swarm app will display where your friends are at, much like Foursquare has for a while now, but it also includes a few other notable features. Those include:

  • Search past check-ins: Just like it sounds, users can search through their previous check-ins for a specific city, person or place.
  • Neighborhood sharing: Allows friends to see when you’re in their neighborhood and for you to see when friends are nearby.
  • Plans and people nearby: Users can suggest a plan or activity that’s viewable by all of their friends in their city. Those friends can then reply to the suggested plan.

As for the main Foursquare app, it will become focused on discovery. The app will learn from the places that you’ve already visited as well as reviews of local spots. It will then work its magic to recommend new restaurants and stores for you to visit. The refreshed Foursquare app is expected to roll out later this summer.

Foursquare explains that it decided to split its app into two separate apps because when most users load up the current Foursquare app, they either only check-in or only discover a new place to visit. Splitting it into two apps should help to make those two actions quicker since they’ve now got their own dedicated apps. Of course, for those users that perform both actions whenever they load up Foursquare, this split might be a bit frustrating.

Swarm can be downloaded from Google Play widget below. Once you get it installed, be sure to share your first impressions of the new app in the comments section!

I don’t like that they’re getting rid of check-ins within Foursquare and I don’t like this new app.
First of all, I don’t understand why there is a start page that (for me) only gives me the option to add friends. That’s a waste of an entire screen with an option that should be somewhere in the settings. I would prefer to start up in what’s the second screen, a list of my checkins and those of my friends.
The third screen, Plans, I’m never going to use. If want to plan a meeting with friends, why would I limit myself to only those people who have this app installed?
The fourth screen is also a waste of space. Why would I need or want a full screen of notifications whereas this is just a drop down list in the Foursquare app.
If there are no improvement soons, this will be deleted again. If checkins are removed from the Foursquare app, it will also be deleted. Goodbye Foursquare, you ruined a perfectly good app by alienating your existing userbase and deviating from what made you great!

So Foursquare is going away? I love checking in and badges and mayorships. My favorite was at Tumbleweed I always got a free large queso or appetizer and they quit doing that and you just get a margarita sundae still for checking in no more mayor thing. But I don’t have swarm yet and don’t know if I’m going to like it. So eventually here soon I wont’ be able to check in with foursquare do I have to use this app to check in.

I just tried it out abit and so… do we not get to earn points and medals anymore? Or is that yet to be made viewable in Swarm but points are still being registered when checking-in through Swarm? Cos if not then this could be rather disappointing. Plus the furthest left tab seems kinda confusing to me, not entirely sure what it’s trying to show me…
