Google News & Weather version 2.0 update brings Material Design makeover

Remember the Google News & Weather app? It’s one that I’m sure many of us have used at one time or another, but the app has been a bit neglected in recent years. That’s changing today, as the app has gotten a major update and a fresh, Material Design-ified coat of paint.

Version 2.0 of the Google News & Weather app is now rolling out with a new Material Design interface and refreshed widgets. The app includes categories like Top Stories, Technology and Sports, and you can also choose from 60-country specific editions and special news sections like “Hollywood” and “Fashion.”

Today’s update also brings with it some refreshed widgets. Those include a 4×1 widget with both news and weather as well as a large news feed with a weather forecast up top.

It’s awesome to see Google continue to spread its hot new Material Design UI to its apps, and it’s also nice to see Google News & Weather get a big update after many thought that it had been forgotten.

You can snag Google News & Weather using the Play Store widget below. It’s still showing up as incompatible for some devices, so if you’re unable to install it, check back after a bit.
