Google is nearing iOS compatibility with Android Wear

According to a new report from The Verge, Google is in the final stages of enabling compatibility between iOS and Android Wear. Since its launch, Android Wear has been exclusively compatible with Android, an unsurprising fact considering the hoops that need to be jumped through in order to make it compatible with other platforms. But reports have stated that Google has been working to bring Android Wear to iOS, and now it seems that the date is drawing near.

According to The Verge, Google is in the final stage of development that uses a companion app on iOS to support notifications. The compatibility isn’t as complete as with Android, but it’s also said to include Google Now cards, voice search, voice commands and some functionality with Google apps, such as replying to Gmail messages. Other than that, the information is murky and we’re left to wonder what other compatibility will remain and what will be left out.

The biggest question is whether or not Apple will let Google go ahead with its plans. The company is on the cusp of releasing its first smartwatch, the Apple Watch, and likely won’t want Google competing with its own smartwatches. Aside from simply blocking Android Wear devices from connecting, Apple also has the ability to block the Android Wear companion app. In 2010, Apple made the move to reject apps that mentioned competing platforms, which Android Wear quite obviously does.

Google may be close to allowing compatibility, but it’ll be interesting to see how Apple responds and whether or not it will allow Android Wear devices to work with iOS. Stay tuned for more details.
