last chance to RSVP

So what started as a quiet and respectable gathering of geeks has slightly ballooned into a full on party. We were able to secure a much larger space and have been able to send invites to dozens of you that RSVP’d over the past week. We are again getting close to capacity, so if you haven’t RSVP’d yet, do so by firing an email to RSVP@androidandme.com.

The meetup is going down at Opal Divine’s in downtown Austin on 6th street. Come join us for some food and drink or to just say hey. We’ll have free t-shirts on hand and would like to put one all over your midsection.

Andy over Austin

Which brings me to some bad news. Originally, we ordered way more shirts than we had spots. Now that we have a larger area, we’ve got way more space than shirts. It’s a stinky situation but we’d rather hang out with as many of you as possible rather than turning people away because we don’t have enough shirts. Because we came up a bit short we’ll only be able to give tees to the first 50 guests to check in to the party.

Since location-based services seem to be all the buzz at this year’s event, we are going to try a small experiment. We want all the guests to check in, tweet, or buzz about the gathering with Gowalla, Foursquare, Twitter, Brightkite, or whatever location-aware micro status updating doohickey currently has your fancy. Doing so will score you a free shirt. At the party we’ll have a table set up for the shirts and to score one you’ve simply gotta come with phone in hand and show us a status update.

We think it’ll be fun to see what effect (if any) a large crowd simultaneously spewing social alerts would have. And you get a free tee. So really everybody wins (except those after the first 50, you don’t win. At all.) To sum things up, we made this handy poster (which you’ll find at the event, marking the tee table):

Handy chart leading you to a free shirt (click for full size)

Also, that crazy awesome poster up top features our favorite Android characters Andy & Bill and was illustrated by Angie just for the event. We’ll have a couple dozen of them on hand at the party to give away so arrive early if you’d like to get your hands on one. If you just can’t wait, here is a Flickr set filled with shots of the final posters.

To sum things up: party tomorrow night, tees for the on-time, fun for all. If you haven’t RSVP’d yet, do so now. Looking forward to seeing all you guys there!

running around town like a madman just got a lot cooler

It’s no secret that location, location, location is the hot topic here as we approach SXSW. Seems like nowadays everyone is jumping on board the location bandwagon, trying to get a piece of that sweet, social activity action. As new competitors erupt it has been interesting to watch the established guys step up their game to stay on top.

My profile, with activity

To that end, Foursquare has released a new update featuring a completely refreshed user interface and new SXSW content just in time for the big show. The new interface is a huge step up and is easily one of the nicer looking social apps available in the market.

The new interface features refreshed icons, an improved color scheme, and a handful of new features. The friends tab holds a nice stream of all your friend’s activity, as well as a leader board (for just your friends or your whole city). Places is a list of venues and locations you can check in to for badges and bragging rights while the Me tab is a central location for all your unlocked achievements.

Along with the new look comes some new content focused on SXSW. The Foursquare website updated a few days back with a look at all the new SXSW badges and hoopla, including a live game of foursquare (the playground hit) in downtown Austin.

Last night while we were out running around Austin with friends I noticed the new update notification for Foursquare. I’d heard a new user interface was on the way so I quickly grabbed the app and fired it up to find new, in-app SXSW content. When I check in to an Austin location Foursquare adds a SXSW banner at the bottom for keeping track of all your Austin accolades.

SXSW stats

The app also will let you create a venue, something sorely missing from the Gowalla native app. Unlike Gowalla, however, Foursquare will let you check in to a location when you are miles from it, sort of defeating the point of the app being location-aware. But if you can trust your social graph there is plenty of fun to be had here.

Foursquare launched at last year’s SXSW event so this is somewhat of a birthday for them. In just a year they’ve been able to pick up more than 500,000 users and over 1.4 million venues.

So for those of you coming to SXSW: make sure you have Foursquare installed (and Gowalla for that matter. This week I’ll be running both). It should a pretty easy way to find out what’s going on where and with who (in theory, at least). Check out a full gallery of screens below:

Today Engadget came across a leaked flyer that reveals new details and even a new name. Time to take a closer look at the new kid on the block.

At the last MobileMonday Austin, Dell was on hand and during their presentation casually pulled a Mini 5 out and held it up for the crowd to see. At the time I was playing with my own phone and wouldn’t have ever noticed but luckily Todd was paying attention and demanded I go get photos. Good thing too, this big guy is looking pretty awesome.

We got to play with the device (they said they are hesitant to call it a phone because of it’s size) for a good half hour and came away pretty impressed. We grabbed a handful of photos but had been waiting to post them until some new information about the device came to light…

Today Engadget came across a leaked flyer that reveals new details and even a new name. The Dell Streak will be available in a number of color and design options (thanks to Dell Design Studio) and feature a new content partnership with Amazon.com. That means the Streak will have a Kindle e-book reader app, Amazon MP3, Amazon video streams- the full gamut of Amazon digital content goodness.

Check out the two leaked flyers below:

Colors and specs

Digital content from Amazon

So what else do we know about it?

Size: Back when we played with the device it was still the Dell Mini 5 but a lot of things were starting to look pretty final. Like the form factor. As you can see in the photos (and in the flyers above and videos online) this thing is production ready. It has an incredibly slim body (in the same range of a Nexus or iPhone) and feels really good in hand (although that might change if you have tiny hands).

Custom UI: The Mini 5 is running a custom user interface but overall it wasn’t as intrusive as some others we’ve seen. I asked the rep how ‘deep’ the customizations were and he said they hope to never be more than a few weeks behind the official Android upgrades. The UI had a couple really nice ideas. You can launch the full app tray from any screen on the phone (no need to return home), you can easily add new home screens on the fly (with custom backgrounds), there were a number of custom yet clean widgets, all sorts of stuff that seemed natural and usable.

That being said, it wasn’t the prettiest interface I’ve ever seen. Lots of gray gradients and rounded edges left me wanting something a bit more sharp for the huge 5-inch WVGA (800 x 480) screen.

Default home

Facebook widget

Keyboard: The Streak has a virtual keyboard but I thought it was worthy to note how huge it feels on the 5 inch screen. They’ve even got room to fit a full num pad on there. Which I think is a first on an Android virtual keyboard (at least displaying them alongside one another). The touchscreen felt very accurate and typing on this beast was a joy.

wiiiidescreen keyboard

And other goodies: We’ve got a few more shots of the Mini 5 on our Flickr page. The unit on display was also capable of receiving live over the air TV (via a small third party unit). And even though there is only one channel here in Austin broadcasting in the new mobile standard format (which means probably fewer elsewhere), it was pretty cool to see live, high quality OTA TV on a phone.

The Mini 5 also had the full range of Google apps (market, maps, etc) so we know Dell is in the good graces of Google.

Let’s wrap this up

The Dell Mini 5, er, the Dell Streak, really looks to be shaping up into a hot device. While it was running a dated version of Android, we’ve heard reports that Dell plans to get it upgraded in time for launch. When will that be? Well, they aren’t saying. But given how polished this thing is looking it’s gotta be soon.

Given all the discussion and jokes about the size of this beast (myself included) it was really nice to play with it in person to see how normal it felt. Sure it was larger than any phone I’ve ever used, but in an awesome way, not a look-at-me-holding-a-platter-against-my-face sorta way.

Psssst! Taking place this Saturday in Austin, TX is a party so fresh we just found out about it ourselves.

Update: Ok so we totally need more space than what we reserved. We are going to talk with our host to see if we can get more room. Update coming when we have one.

Update 2: We talked with our host Opal Devine’s and it looks like we can accommodate up to 100 people, but you must RSVP so we can give them a headcount by Friday.

Psssst! Taking place this Saturday in Austin, TX is a party so fresh we just found out about it ourselves. And that’s saying something, because it’s our party. Android and Me will be in Austin, TX (as always) for SXSW 2010 and to get things started we are having a secret party this Saturday night.

Space is extremely limited but if you’d like to attend please email RSVP@androidandme.com to be added to the list. There’s a very good chance it will fill up immediately but send a message anyway if you’d like to be added to a waiting list (we are working on getting more space). Upon confirmation you’ll receive an email with the exact time, location, etc. We wish we could party with all you guys, but for now, strict RSVPs are a must.

It looks like we’ll be in good company. The entire Android and Me core team will be on hand, as well and a bunch of members of the Austin Android User Group (our most awesome co-host). Also already on the list is @bendroidLLC and @cookingcapsules, two awesome Android developers responsible for some cool stuff in the Android market.

New Shirts

the winner, coming to a midsection near you

To commemorate the event we’re having some special tees made just for SXSW 2010. Anyone coming to the party gets one for free. We’ll also have extra shirts to hand out throughout the week so be on the lookout for some goofy looking guys handing out shirts.

We’ll also try to give away a couple here on the site too for those would couldn’t attend. The tees go to production tomorrow morning and we just nailed down the final design, which you can see to the right.

Come find us

We’ll be at random events all week (hopefully) so keep an eye on our Twitter account for updates. We’ve got a few other surprises up our sleeves that should be rolling out over the next few days and are really just looking forward to meeting all you guys.

One event we are definitely attending is Android: What We’ve Learned About Mobile in the Last Two Months presented by Google’s Erick Tseng. We’ll also be hitting up gdgt live in Austin, quite the gathering of awesome tech companies.

We’ll also be trying to shoot plenty of photos and video during the week so if you’ve got anything to show off, please find us. Hit us up on Twitter or use our contact form here on the site and let us know if you’ve got something you need to show the world.

Excited? I know I am.

first glimpse of Android on AT&T not worth flipping out over

Are you in the market for an incredibly wacky form factor running an outdated version of Android underneath a custom user interface that’s had Google search stripped out? Then you’re in luck.

The Motorola Backflip went on sale through the AT&T website and represents the first glimpse of Android for the carrier. The device is running Android 1.5 but you’d be hard pressed to notice that on the AT&T product page. In fact it doesn’t even say which version it’s running:

Seriously, that.

Sometimes you guys think we give certain phones too hard a time but we think a unified front is going to be a key factor in the success of Android. So decisions like these (dated OS, custom UI, no Google) really fail to get me excited about a device.

That being said, any of our users purchase or planning to pick up one of these phones? Any readers AT&T customers that were just waiting for an Android device to buy?

We've been following Gowalla for quite some time now. And judging by the funding they've picked up and how quickly they are making progress we can't be the only ones.

We’ve been following Gowalla for some time now. And judging by the funding they’ve picked up and how quickly they are making progress we can’t be the only ones. For months now Gowalla has been available on Android via a webapp at m.gowalla.com. Starting today (just in time for SXSW) a full blown native app is available in the Android Market. Does the new app cut the mustard? Is it worth switching to? (Hint: yes, download it now).

Gowalla is a location-based game that allows users to check in from various locations (or create the location if it doesn’t exist). Checking in at locations will give you a stamp and certain combinations of check-ins will unlock pins (icons with a silly theme/title). Along with locations (like restaurants, bars, retail locations, etc) there are trips, multi-location stops that earn you a pin. There are featured trips created by the Gowalla team and user-created trips that can be saved and shared among friends.

Gowalla users can follow each other and easily keep track of their friends activity in one stream. Which is really the main point of Gowalla: knowing where your friends are, where they’ve been, and what they’ve been up to.

My Gowalla passport

One area Gowalla really shines is design. The entire look and feel shows an amazing level of polish. There is a great set of default location icons and an ever growing even cooler set of featured location icons. When a location is happenin’ enough to deserve it’s own icon Gowalla doesn’t disappoint. I’m not sure why the design nerd in me gets such a kick out of shiny icons but I won’t fight it. I’ll just keep collecting.

Recently Gowalla has even been dropping real life items onto the map, allowing users to score freebies when checking into locations. For the upcoming Gowalla SXSW party, the only guaranteed way to get in is by finding a VIP ticket in the wild around Austin. Which means I’ll most likely be spending a few shameful hours driving around downtown looking for a VIP pass (unless someone from Gowalla wants to put me on the list. See how shameful?)

The native app seems to have an easier time with location data than I used to get in the webapp. I’ve been using the Gowalla beta for weeks now and the Market version seems to be just as snappy. The native app also seems to have more details on the locations and trips (like maps, showing who’s completed the trip, etc) which makes for a more complete browsing experience. The app’s also got a way to comb your existing social networks for contacts which makes adding users a breeze.

To go along with the native Android app, iPhone app, AND webapp, Gowalla recently launched a redesigned desktop site that’s looking better than ever. All the data from the app is flawlessly translated into a desktop browser for use when away from your device.

Months back I used Foursquare. Then for a few weeks I was using Foursquare and the Gowalla webapp. After a while I dropped Foursquare all together. Gowalla just continues to impress me. And they’re located here in Austin which instantly wins them a couple points.

Check the gallery for a full selection of screens from the new app then head to the Market or scan the QR above to download Gowalla for yourself.

Note: If you’re upgrading from the beta, it’s been recommended that before you install the Market version you first remove the beta.

UPDATE: Whoops, looks like you can’t create a location in the native app yet. So far I’ve never needed to create a location but I could see that being really annoying if you were in a less active area. I’m sure it’s on their list of things to do.

StatusNote is a handy little app that allows you to stash a task or quick note in your notification bar. The notification bar already does a great job of delivering alerts so it makes sense to extend that control to the user.

StatusNote lets you enter a title and description and set an icon (currently dozens to pick from) to be displayed alongside the note. It’s a great way to quickly set a note that simply can’t be ignored. Every time you wake your device the note is right there, staring you in the face.

StatusNote is free but is restricted to a single note. The developer also offers a paid version called StatusNotes that allows infinite note saving and editing.

Finally a date for the CDMA version of the Nexus One

We’ve finally got a date on the Nexus One’s much anticipated Verizon arrival: March 23. Last week we heard that a CDMA version of the HTC device had cleared FCC and we knew it was only a matter of time before an exact date was revealed.

The date comes from a Google employee but at this point neither Google nor Verizon has confirmed the date. March 23 also happens to be the first day of CTIA, a huge trade show in Vegas where all the top companies should be pulling out the big guns. While we hope to see some new devices announced, the Nexus coming to Verizon should still make quite a splash.

When the Droid launched on Verizon we were shown one of the largest Android advertising campaigns to date. Does anyone think Verizon will give a similar push to the Nexus? Or will it quietly slip out to the nerds while being ignored by the general public (like it did on T-Mobile)?

Update: Sprint 4G to cover 120 million people by the end of 2010.

Lately there has been a lot of talk about 3G vs 4G and exactly how fast each is. Sprint has been touting “The first and only wireless 4G network from a national carrier” while T-Mobile just completed their HSPA 7.2 upgrade and is moving to HSPA+ this year.

The whole thing had us curious about current, real-world network speeds so we decided to benchmark the two networks against each other.

Overdrive in the park.

This past week, Sprint was nice enough to send us a new Overdrive 4G Mobile Hotspot by Sierra Wireless. We took the opportunity to drive around Austin and get our hands dirty to find out just how fast Sprint’s 4G network is.

The Overdrive is a small black square, about 3 inches across and less than an inch thick. When powered up, the small screen on the front displays a unique network ID along with a password to a secure WiFi network. The Overdrive allows up to five devices to easily connect at a time. The device can seamlessly jump between 4G and 3G (when coverage might be spotty) and Sprint is promoting peak download speeds of up to 10 mb/s.

When we are on the road (or even around town) there are lots of times when available WiFi speeds just aren’t fast enough (I’m looking at you, hotel WiFi) so the appeal of a mobile hotspot is high. Usually we tether through our phones, using WiFi Tether or PDAnet, but in the past I’ve found these solutions to not always be the most reliable. They are surely a nice backup (and many times a life saver) but sometimes they just flat out don’t work.

To find out if boosted speeds and a more reliable connection could justify a dedicated device we drove around Austin testing speeds and performing tasks with both the Sprint 4G Overdrive (connected to my Asus eeePC netbook) and my Nexus One running on T-mobile 3G. The speed tests were run through Speedtest.net, our favorite web and Android app for doing so.

Overdriving Around Town

We are located in Austin, Tx, basically one of the most awesome places ever. With an ever growing tech community, it makes sense to expect some impressive network speeds and we found them driving around town.

We visited three areas spread around Austin and recorded the results of a speed test. At each location, the Sprint 4G bested T-Mobile 3G handily in both download and upload speeds. Sometimes T-Mobile 3G edged out the Sprint 4G in latency tests, but in terms of sheer transfer speeds there is a clear winner:

Believe it or not, we found the fastest speeds at the Northwest District Park (which is great news for me as we bike there frequently and hang out for extended periods of time). Sprint 4G was able to hit a speedy 5.3 mb/s. While still shy of the advertised peak speeds I’d take speeds like that any day.

At the cafe, having some gelato.

Another thing to note is how the T-Mobile speeds increased in spaces where the Sprint speeds dipped and vice versa. The numbers would suggest there are significant differences in the coverage maps even at a city level.

The real surprise was T-Mobile testing at almost 2 mb/s downtown. I’d heard others reporting 3G speeds that high but this is the first time to actually see them for myself. Like a true nerd I got all excited when I saw the little download meter shoot up towards 2 mb/s.

Clearly the 4G network is faster. Download and upload speeds surpass anything I’ve had access to in the past. The only bad thing is the fact that I have to return the demo unit. The Overdrive performed very well and I was pretty impressed with how easy it was to use. In fact, it seems like it might even be handy to keep around at home…

Home Sweet Home

When I first started home testing I was planning on including my home internet connection (Time Warner Cable) in the speed comparisons. I’d seen countless people online talking about increased mobile network speeds and joking Soon I’ll be able to cancel my internet.

After a few tests I saw my permanent connection was so much faster (30 mb/s down) that really there was no comparison. My home internet is much, much faster so really the two mobile data connections were competing for the spot of primary backup (for those unfortunate days when you wake up without internet). Again, the Sprint 4G bested T-Mobile 3G:

Another big area the Overdrive wins is reliability (sometimes my Wifi Tether and PDAnet simply will not work). To be fair, those programs aren’t really officially supported connection options and a 3G modem from T-Mobile would probably perform admirably. But most of us don’t have a dedicated mobile internet device, we cheat and use our phones. If I’m strictly comparing using a fancy dedicated device or a workaround hack, I’d pick the dedicated device.

Whether that’s enough to justify a new line or service or actually purchasing a standalone device is another story. If you are already with Sprint and live in a 4G coverage area, this could be a very worthwhile purchase for you. If you are already under contract with another carrier, you can probably survive without an Overdrive. That being said, the Overdrive has a lot going for it…

Looking over the Overdrive

This thing is quite the looker

The Overdrive couldn’t be simpler to use. Its got one button. You press it and the device powers up. Instantly the Overdrive starts up a WiFi access point.

The 3 inch glossy black square features beveled corners and a 1.4in LCD screen. Up to five devices can connect to share the connection. There is even a MicroSD slot on-board for shared storage between the connected devices. The Overdrive contains a 1830 mAh battery that will give you up to 3 hours constant use or 36 hours in standby.

So far every device I’ve tried to connect to the Overdrive worked just fine. I’ve connected a handful of Android phones, netbooks, and my desktop PC (all worked flawlessly). The Overdrive boasts a range of 150ft, which I didn’t exactly measure, but I had no range issues of any kind (through walls, across the park, etc).

The Sprint 4G network boasts peak speeds of up to 10mb/s but they say average use can expect to see speeds of about 3-6 mb/s, which is about what we found. The upload is supposed to peak at 4 mb/s but our tests had trouble getting anywhere near 1 mb/s. For most users that’s not exactly a deal breaker, but a mobile HD video uploading fellow like myself would like to see some higher upload speeds. That being said, this thing is still crazy fast.

Another thing I found it did well was hop between 3G and 4G with minimal effort. Just a small *beeboop* from the unit to let you know you’ve changed networks. It even held a connection while heading up I-35 at 70mph (with Angie driving, of course).

Contents of the Overdrive box.

The Overdrive comes in a glossy plastic box in a white cardboard sleeve and includes a MicroUSB cable and USB wall plug. I’ve been a huge fan of the USB wall plug so it’s good to see it finally catching on. You also get a quick start guide and manual with instructions for getting up and running (I doubt you’ll need them).

Let’s wrap this up

4G? 3G? WiMax? It’s all marketing speak, really. But for the time being the Sprint 4G network seems to be the fastest. The Overdrive is a perfectly capable device for making the most of it and if I was currently with Sprint I’d be mighty tempted to pick one up.

We expect to see a Sprint 4G handset later this year, but we should also keep an eye on T-Mobile for when their HSPA+ network is nationwide.

Last night’s Mobile Monday was not the most centrally located and when I arrived I found my Nexus One only had an Edge connection. I pulled the Overdrive puck out of my bag and had a steady, speedy WiFi connection all night (as did those around me). And I think that’s really the win here. Do you need a dedicated speed boost with you at all times? No. But it sure is awesome.

What do you guys think?

I know this isn’t an Android device but wireless network speeds always seem like a hotly contested topic on this site and we figured you guys would enjoy it. Do any of you have a dedicated mobile internet device? Would you ever consider buying one just for an insane speed boost?
