Nexus S users are currently enjoying their update to Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich. The new UI and features are awesome, but there is one little thing last year’s Nexus was missing – Face Unlock.

While some consider Face Unlock to be a gimmick, others find it to be one of the coolest features in ICS. It was only a matter of time before developers were able to make this feature possible for the Nexus S. Some members of the Android Central Forums have gone ahead and snatched Face Unlock from the Galaxy Nexus and created a ROM for all the brave flashers out there.

As always, there is the accustomed disclaimer. These are AOSP custom ROMs, and flashing such may void your warranty and/or affect your device’s functionality. Those brave users who choose to go this route do so assuming all responsibility. The ROMs are not perfect (just like all others) as there could be some bugs. Don’t forget to follow instructions well and read everything before proceeding.

If you still want to unlock your device à la Science fiction, go ahead and get the ROM files from the Android Central Forums. There is a version available for both the GSM (T-Mobile) and the Sprint version – so everyone is covered. Links are right below.

Get the ROM for the Sprint Nexus S 4G.

Get the ROM for the GSM Nexus S.

Are you guys flashing one of these ROMs? Let us know how it goes! Happy Holidays!

Editor’s Note: Rooting your device will void your warranty and, though highly unlikely if you follow directions carefully, could brick your device. We take no responsibility for damage to your device caused by the rooting process.

The HTC Amaze 4G has only been on the market for a few short weeks, but developers have been staying up late into the night working to gain root access for the phone. A few temporary root solutions have popped up over the past week or so, but now you can permanently root the T-Mobile HTC Amaze 4G with a simple, one-click root option developed by xboarder56 on XDA-Developers.

The One Click Perm Root tool gives Amaze 4G users permanent root access, as long as you already have an unlocked bootloader. Those who are not willing to use the official HTCDev bootloader unlocking tool will need to rerun the process every time you restart your phone.

HTC Amaze 4G root instructions:

Download and install HTC drivers on your computer.

Connect the HTC Amaze to your computer via USB.

Turn on USB debugging Menu > Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging.

Download xboarder56’s One Click Perm Root tool.

Extract zip file to C:\.

Click ZergRushTempRoot.bat.

Wait about three minutes.

Reboot.

Enjoy your HTC Amaze 4G with full root access.

For more details about xboarder56’s HTC Amaze One Click Root tool, check out the official thread on XDA-Developers. A custom recovery is still being worked on, but in the meantime you can start using all your favorite applications that require root access.

If you do decide to root your HTC Amaze 4G, let us know how the process goes and what you plan to do with root access on your phone.

If you went from the HTC EVO 4G to the HTC EVO 3D, Netflix hasn’t been very nice to you for the last month or so. Things seemed way too perfect when the HTC EVO 4G received its long-awaited Gingerbread update. The good ol’ EVO 4G was now even faster and smoother, and everything was working great. Until you tried to watch your favorite shows on Netflix, that is. It was definitely a downer to see the Gingerbread update got rid of your Netflix compatibility, but this problem was fixed with another update issued about 2 weeks ago.

Now those hard-core HTC EVO 4G fans who decided to go for its successor, the HTC EVO 3D, probably have their spirits down again. While the EVO 3D is a better device overall, it is lacking Netflix support. Also, many have been complaining about the lack of the Flashlight app (a simple, but very helpful and necessary app the EVO 3D did not inherit from the EVO 4G).

For those with Netflix/Flashlight withdrawals (or those who just want these apps on their brand new EVO 3D), there is a solution. You won’t be able to find these apps on the Android Market. But if you get the unmodified apps from the EVO 4G, they can be sideloaded into the HTC’s 3D smartphone. You find the apk files for these two apps at the Pocketables Forums and install them yourself.

I have personally tested both apps on the HTC EVO 3D and they work perfectly. You guys should be set to watch your favorite movies on Netflix now. If you do happen to run into any problems, please let us know so we can further investigate the topic. Is this working for everyone?

Update:

It has been brought to our attention that the download links no longer work. Seems like too many of you were trying to hop on these links, and they have been canceled due to a high level of traffic! Do not fear, though, here is another set of links for you!

Netflix

Flashlight

Our favorite ROM developers have just released CyanogenMod 7.1, an upgrade to Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread. It must be clarified that this is only a Release Candidate (RC), so it’s for testing purposes and will not work perfectly.

This release candidate should be fairly stable for daily use, but always do a backup first in case something goes wrong. You can help out by giving us feedback on the forums and reporting bugs at the issue tracker.CyanogenCyanogenMod

If you want to get in early and test this ROM now, you can download it from their mirror network and install it with Rom Manager.

While this is mostly an upgrade to Andorid 2.3.4, CyanogenMod 7.1 comes with many surprises. Some features included in the Change Log are impressive (i.e. bluetooth mouse support), but that’s not the most exciting part. The best news is that their support has extended to quite a few devices. The list includes “various Samsung devices (Galaxy S, Captivate and Vibrant), the LG Optimus 2X (p990) /T-Mobile G2x (p999), HTC Incredible S (vivo) and Motorola CLIQ/CLIQ XT.”

Go ahead! Check out the new RC version of CyanogenMod 7.1, if you’re feeling adventurous. Don’t forget to support the CyanogenMod team by giving feedback about your experience with the software. (It’ll help them make the product better). Anyone out there using it yet? Please let us know what your experience with this Release Candidate is like!

OnLive is definitely one of the most revolutionary gaming platforms, introducing cloud gaming at its finest. While we’re not yet able to use our Android devices for OnLive gaming, HTC Flyer users must be happy to see the OnLive viewer just came to their tablet via a recent update. As the name entails, you won’t be able to play with this app. But it will allow you to watch your fellow gamers playing online.

While the Flyer is the only lucky device to get this treat, our friends over at XDA have found a work around. And the apk is available for you to try out. You can find the apk file over at their forums, and it’s posted at the bottom of the first page.

If you’re a hard-core gamer, go on and test the apk on your devices. Please let us know if/how it works for you, just so we can get an idea of the compatibility. Also, don’t forget to tell us which phone you’re using to test this apk file.

Update:

I tested the OnLive Viewer on the HTC Thunerbolt and the HTC EVO 3D. The app worked perfectly for both devices. I also recorded a short video that demonstrates the installation procedure and includes a preview of what the app is like. The video is posted below if you have any issues or just want to see what it’s like before you try it.

Locked bootloaders are a hot topic nowadays. Most Android fans prefer to play around freely with their devices. And Motorola hasn’t been so good about letting us do that, since they insist on locking them.

If you’re like us, I bet you thought the Droid X and Defy were about to become old, obsolete devices. Think again. CyanogenMod-7 is here to resuscitate them with some custom ROM goodness.

It has indeed been a hard quest for our beloved developers to put CM-7 onto these devices. After countless hours of hard work, cvpcs and Quarx have figured out a way to port it over. All that coding and testing is not easy, though, so the ROM does not yet work perfectly on these devices.

CM-7 for the Motorola Droid X

The developer that ported CM-7 to the Droid X has actually posted a video as proof of this righteous deed of might and courage.

So this leaves a lot of questions! Such as what works and what doesn't! From what I could tell by playing around with it, the following definitely work: Radio, Wifi, USB, Charging, various sensors, lights, vibration, standard bluetooth. The following MAY or MAY NOT work (unable to tell for sure yet): GPS, 3G/data, camera, camcorder, bluetooth audio. And the following definitely do NOT work yet: audio (this includes phone calls, speakers, microphone, etc).cvpcsRootzWiki

As already mentioned, the ROM has just been ported, so things are not expected to run smoothly… at least not yet. The developer, cvpcs, is still working on it and claims many features may not be working because he has yet to finish the Libaudio driver for the Droid X. He might have to rewrite the whole thing from source, if he doesn’t find a good alternative. But, this does indicate cvpcs is definitely set on making this work.

Cvpcs mentions that he’ll be needing testers starting sometime this week. He’ll be posting more information about it on rootzwiki.com, as well as on his own blog. Stay tuned for more details, if you want to get in on the testing action!

CM-7 for the Motorola Defy[1]

This one is actually ready to download and install. If you’re feeling adventurous, head over to XDA and follow the instructions.

Though you may experience issues here and there, this port is actually not having too many problems. Everything is running well, except for 720p video recording and WVGA photos.

Works: Wifi, SD-Card, 3D, Auto-Brightness, LED, Photo Camera with Flash, Video Camera(H264), GSM/3G, Bluetooth +Headset + HID, Sensors, GPS/aGPS, FM-radio

Doesn't work: 720p Rec. WVGA Photo

Earlier this year, Sony Ericsson promised that it would bring substantial improvements to its performance within the Android platform. Sony Ericsson has been making devices with good potential, but sadly, the company has been lagging when it comes to software updates (which is what seems to bother most Sony Ericsson Android users). Sony Ericsson is throwing us some curve balls lately, proving that their commitment to the Android platform is legit. Not only are their phones better and even coming straight with Gingerbread, but Sony Ericsson also seems to be opening the doors to the developer world, which is sadly starting to become much less of a trend lately.

Last month, Sony Ericsson gave us official support for unlocking their devices’ bootloaders. Today looks like an even brighter day, as they have posted a tutorial that shows us how to build a custom kernel and flash it to an Xperia device. Bad news is that Xperia X10 users will be left out, since this guide is actually specific to the new Xperia devices: the Xperia Play, Xperia Arc, and Xperia Neo.

Now that Sony Ericsson has put down its weapons and decided to cooperate with the developer world, the company decided to even bring some official support at the XDA-Developers site… Impressive. It looks like the future of Sony Ericsson will begin to look brighter. As manufacturers continue to lock their devices, the Xperia brand will start gaining a better reputation within the Android world.

If you have been keeping yourself updated with Android news, you have probably heard all the hype about security, location, and privacy for the past couple weeks. Though such issues are a given (since most of the benefits of working “in the cloud” are made possible due to these features), they can become dangerous and sometimes get out of hand.

CyanogenMod has just released version 7.0.3, which consists of a bug fix for the update notification system and fixing a security hole. The release is still based on Android 2.3.3, so don’t get your hopes up on that video chatting feature (Check Alberto’s article for an alternative way to accomplish this).

In an attempt to keep hackers away from CyanogeMod users, the team has kept information about this security hole private, so we do not know exactly how we could be affected. Regardless, the issue has been fixed, and you can now head over to CyanogenMod’s mirror network to download this update, or it can also be found on Rom Manager.

You should not install this update if you are already running a recent nightly build, only if you are coming from 7.0, 7.0.2, or 7.0.2.1. Chris Soyars

Before you install this update, make sure you are on the right version of CyanogenMod, or you may run into some issues. Aside from minor bug fixes, the main factor here is your security, which is always valuable. If you are running CyanogenMod, go and update to version 7.0.3 before the hackers find the weak spot. Now that we can all breathe and feel safer, don’t forget to share your comments with us. How are you guys liking the new CyanogenMod? Do you feel better now that this security hole is patched?

The Chinese have brought us many great things over the years – Bruce Lee, practically every toy you’ve played with as a kid, and Panda Express. Thanks to one of my many good friends on Twitter, (Eric McBride AKA @Dai323) I have found the next big thing from China. Its an Android ROM called MIUI.

Just when you think you’ve seen all that Android has to offer this company seemingly came out of nowhere to release one of the most original types of UI to ever to grace our handsets. Of course, you could argue that it is not TOO original seeing how it’s taken a lot of cues from Apple’s iOS but its the melding of these two great ideas into one that really makes it special.

I know there are some die hard Android fanboys out there that will consider this ROM an abomination and would rather spit on it than put it anywhere near their phone. But for people like me who love new things, innovation and ease of use, I have fallen in love with this Chinese ROM. Not only does it look beautiful but its also based off Android 2.2 AOSP and it flies like a bat out of hell.

Now, it does come from China and there are NUMEROUS devs working on localizing this (Cyanogen himself in talks with MIUI) for just about every popular Android phone out there. Even in its current state its not too hard to navigate familiar Android menus (I’d say 80% of the ROM is in English). This ROM also self updates so if you’re the paranoid type, you might wanna stay away. But if you decide to take the plunge and you wanna give it a shot, you might experience the freshest thing to happen to Android in quite awhile.

Special thanks once again to @IncredibleDoes for bringing us this quick port and @KingKlick92 for helping me get this running on my Evo.

HTC is completely revamping their Sense UI and taking it to a whole new level. What started out as a merely a skin on top of Android is now turning into a whole new level of service with all of your phone’s media, texts and data being backed up to their soon to be released HTCSense.com.

I’ve always been a fan of Sense since day 1 and it was the reason I went through with rooting my G1 in the first place. I know there has always been a lot of criticisms when it comes to Sense and it definitely isn’t without its naysayers. Whether you are a “Sense Hater” or not, I think HTC has been proving themselves in not only firmware updates but by continuing to enhance the user experience.

Out of all other companies, I feel like HTC is listening. Now, with the addition of themes, super-quick 2 second boot time and the new HTCSense.com, I think Sense is better than ever and definitely pushing the Android OS further.

In this video I’m using a port of the Desire HD ROM that was given to us from @IncredibleDoes on Twitter and XDA. Although buggy, I’m using the ROM to give people a taste of what to expect from HTC Sense in the coming months. I cannot wait until we see this official update from HTC!
