Yes and no. Some devices can be rooted without wiping the phone – it essentially just requires putting the su file in the proper location – but Google’s statement is true for every device that currently supports Google Wallet, ie, the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus. Rooting one of those phones requires unlocking the bootloader, and for this very reason (security), unlocking the bootloader automatically performs a factory reset on the phone.

So yeah, what Google said. Not universally true, but in practice true.

Just more focus on an open platform would be good. No more locked bootloaders, etc. and let’s see if that encourages other manufacturers to be more open.

If you’re expecting Moogle phones to have unlockable bootloaders, and you’re on Verizon, you might as well keep dreaming. The carrier trumps the manufacturer. Maybe they’ll release fewer phones at least~

It’d be awesome to see more Tegra 3 phones. I’m glad that HTC has taken a part of this! NVIDIA will definitely benefit from this :)

I think he’s just showing off how much data he is using. If I remember correctly Tmo charges $15 per MB for into data roaming and Tony is way up over 2GB. He either doesn’t have pay for it or he’s got a $30k bill coming. I’m sure he just has to do a kick flip to pay for it.

HTC has unlocked bootloaders, so I’m sure you will see some stock ICS ROMS pretty quickly.

FWIW, my 12-year-old son has known who Tony Hawk is for a couple of years. And he knows him as a skateboarder, not a video game character.
