Google Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 Performance Preview

Submitted Nov 02, 2012 by Taylor Wimberly

Earlier this week Google announced two new flagship Nexus devices: the Nexus 4 smartphone and the Nexus 10 tablet. We received review samples of both earlier this week, and while we’re hard at work at full reviews of the devices we couldn’t help but share all of the test data we’ve been able to amass at this point.

Very disappointed by the Nexus 4 scores. Also, the review round ups have hit the web and I am disappointed by them as well.

I’m truly baffled by the Nexus 4 scores in light of the scores put up by the Optimus G, a device that uses the very same SoC. My guess is there’s something going on with Android 4.2 that’s limiting scores. At the end of the day, they’re just theoretical benchmarks. What’s important to me is the smoothness of the device when being used and every review thus far has said there isn’t a hint of hesitation. The lack of LTE and, comically enough, Google/LG’s decision to use glass, are the main things reviewers seem to be knocking the phone for. Funny, they had nothing but great things to say about the iPhone 4S last year…

Did you read Engadget’s review? They said they noticed lag a couple of times. On a different note, the camera has not been great during reviews either. Although it is an improvement over the Galaxy Nexus, it doesn’t come close to the One X or the S3 (According to the reviews).

But Taylor, we are waiting for your review as more of a trusted source.

No. I don’t put much stock in Engadget. They haven’t shown themselves to be impartial when it comes to anything not Apple. The same goes for Josh at the Verge, a former Engadget writer incidentally.

I was hoping for some good news but all I saw was the Nexus 4 getting demolished in almost all of the tests. I’m really disappointed.

Don’t worry, friends. The Neuxs 4 will be spectacular. Benchmarks on an unreleased version of Android don;t tell you very much.

If we were to believe all the benchmarks in this review, and that benchmarks are the end all and be all, then we would all own an iPhone and an iPad. Real life is a different story.

I think the Nexus 10 looks good. Here are 30 reasons why I’m buying one — even though I already own an iPad 3: http://mostly-tech.com/2012/11/02/twenty-reasons-why-youd-be-crazy-to-buy-an-ipad-4-over-a-nexus-10/
