After much hoopla Google Wallet finally launched on the Nexus S last September, but it was only available on Sprint’s version of the phone and not T-Mobile’s. Then when Verizon announced their Galaxy Nexus, it was soon discovered that they would not support Google Wallet. Verizon claimed that Google Wallet “needs to be integrated into a new, secure and proprietary hardware element in our phones” and they were continuing their commercial discussions with Google on the issue.

Thanks to a recent app update, Nexus users on AT&T and Verizon can now install Google Wallet directly from the Android Market. Many users previously obtained a hacked copy or side-loaded it onto their device, but now they can have the comfort of getting the latest official version from Google.

AT&T users with the Nexus S or GSM Galaxy Nexus just need to search for Galaxy Nexus and install it. Those devices are recognized as supported in the Market and it’s a 1-click isntall.

Google Wallet
Google Inc.
PLAY
QR
POWERED BY APPAWARE

For Verizon owners of the Galaxy Nexus, the process takes a few extra steps. They need to visit the Android Market website from their browser and then trick their device into installing the official app. It might sound like a little much, but it only takes around one minute to complete.

From your phone open the browser and head to http://market.android.com. (Tip: You may want to clear data and defaults on browser and Market before doing this.)

Search for “Google Wallet.” (If your browser prompts you to open the Market, don’t. Just stay in the browser.)

When the results come back, tap on the Google Wallet icon.

Tap the “Install” button from within the browser and then sign into your Google account. (Again, this is all from the browser, not the Market app.)

Once you have signed in, you should be redirected back to the Market page in the browser.

Obviously, you will not have the option to install there since the VZW Nexus is not supported.

Tap the back button until you are prompted for the Market or Browser again, this time choosing the Market.

The Android Market should open to the Google Wallet page with an option to install.

If it doesn’t work right away, just sign out of the Android Market website from your browser and try the steps again. I tried this on my Verizon Galaxy Nexus and it worked on the 2nd try. Previously I had side-loaded an older version of Google Wallet, and the install updated it to the latest version with no problems.

We don’t have a Nexus S or GSM Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile to test this trick out, but hopefully it works on that device as well. If you happen to have one on hand, let us know if you were able to install Google Wallet from the Market.

At least AT&T is now allowing Google Wallet on some Android phones with NFC, and hopefully Verizon is close to reaching an agreement with Google.

The NFL just released their official Super Bowl XLVI Guide to the Android Market where it’s free to download. It appears the app has a lot of features geared towards those lucky enough to be in Indianapolis this weekend, but there are plenty of other goodies for those watching from home.

Highlights of the app include:

A detailed guide to local restaurants, nightlife, and official Super Bowl events

A 3D map of Indianapolis and an interactive 3D map of Lucas Oil Stadium for gameday

You can follow all of the social media buzz with NFL Huddle

For those who are not a fan of American Football, you still might want to tune into the 4th quarter when Samsung will unveil their next big ad. Also, don’t forget to pick your team in our first annual Android Bowl, where you can win a free Asus Transformer Prime powered by Tegra 3.

My guess is that most of you have never heard of Nick Swinmurn before, but I bet you recognize the company he founded in 1999 called Zappos.com. With the help of Tony Hsieh and Alfred Lin from San Francisco-based Venture Frogs, Zappos went on to generate $1 billion in sales in 2008 and then sold to Amazon for $1.2 billion in 2009.

Nick Swinmurn left Zappos in 2006 when he decided he wanted to do new things. He started his next venture Dethrone Royalty in 2008, which became one of the most recognizable names in MMA apparel, but Swinmurn found it difficult to connect with customers. This lead to the idea behind RNKD, which just launched in November 2011.

RNKD is a new service that rewards you for indexing your closet. It follows a similar loyalty business model as Zappos, but RNKD is unique because people can gain perks based on things they already own.

Users just upload pictures of what’s in their closet and then tag the brand and purchase location to start earning points and weekly rewards. No major brands have signed up yet to offer perks, but users can still win giftcards to Zappos and Dethrone Royalty with contests for deepest collection, most influential, best watch collection, and more.

We had the chance to interview Swinmurn this week where he described his idea behind RNKD. Nick said, “Every consumer has favorite brands, stores and designers that they are loyal to for one reason or another, but most have never been recognized or rewarded for their purchases. RNKD looks to put an end to that, allowing consumers a platform to showcase their loyalty and ultimately receive the benefits they deserve.”

Nick described his vision of future perks by using Nike as an example. ”If you buy more shoes from Nike than anyone else -– shouldn’t you be given early access to new lines and different pricing than someone who is trying the product for the first time and may never buy again?”

I think the loyalty idea behind RNKD is brilliant and it has real potential to connect brands to their most faithful customers (similar to what we are doing with our points system). However, the service is only one month old and has a long way to go. Download stats were not provided, but the month-old iOS version only has 5 reviews, Nick’s profile has 13 followers, and I was user ID 2597 when I signed up.

Clearly there is a long road ahead of RNKD before it can be deemed a success, but Nick’s experience with Zappos should help him slowly grow the business.

Today the Android version of RNKD became available to download, so check it out and share your feedback. Android tablets are not supported and the app didn’t really work on my Galaxy Nexus, so I couldn’t get a good feel of the service. The screen shots that were provided looked pretty bland, so the developers have a long way to go with improving the user interface. (For starters, they might want to update their Android Market listing with a promotional image and video to attract more downloads.)

I’m not really sure if our hardcore nerd audience is the kind of crowd that wants to upload pictures of their clothes for others to look at, but I could be wrong. Let us know if you recognize the genius behind RNKD or can think of any family members that the service might appeal to.

Messages on top: Your messages and notifications are now at the top of your screen. You can respond to friends and stay updated without leaving the page you’re on.

Menu on the side: You can quickly access your News Feed, Groups, games and apps from the new left-hand menu. The features you use most are now at your fingertips.

After you download and install the new update, let us know what you think of the changes. Can you notice a big improvement in speed? What do you think of the interesting side menu?

Each Tuesday we’ll post a question for user-only discussion. In exchange for your opinions, we’ve increased the points for a comment upvote on these posts, so sharing something useful to the community will get you even more credit.

Today’s question: What is the best Twitter app for Android? I’m sure we’ve had this discussion before, but the last post I could find was from 2009, so I think we’re ready for a revisit.

In addition to user comments, we’ll make sure to get a few staffers to answer each Topic Tuesday, too. My favorite Twitter client has to be Tweetdeck. I’m in love with the column interface, especially the small yellow dots/lines that indicate when there are new tweets to be read. At a glance, I can see new tweets across multiple accounts, saved hashtags or other users. The compose tweet screen is also one of the best I’ve seen, making it insanely easy to add mentions, location, shortened links, etc. On top of all the Twitter stuff I like, Tweetdeck also supports Facebook and Foursquare, neither of which I use but mention here in case some of you guys do.

We asked staff author Dustin Earley which Twitter experience he preferred and he want the au natural route:

“When it comes to Twitter clients for my Nexus S, I have obsessively used them all. It may not be the best looking of the bunch, but two things keep me coming back to the official Twitter client for Android. I have yet to find another app that is quite as smooth or has better notifications. Every app seems to have at least some small form of stutter or lag except for the official Twitter app. The ‘pull to refresh’ animation is a great example. Other apps have tried to use it, but the animation for the action is never as fluid. Notifications in the official Twitter app are quick and have never had a negative impact on the battery life of my Nexus. With an older phone like this, every little bit towards the battery life counts.”

We also polled our editor Anthony Domanico, who reminded us that he also likes to check out The Twitters on a tablet:

“Though it’s not necessarily my first choice when it comes to phones (Tweetdeck wins it in that category), I religiously use Plume on my Honeycomb tablet. Simply put, the UI on Plume for Honeycomb is gorgeous, and the way Plume handles multiple accounts helps me manage my two personal and one AAM accounts with ease. Also, since this is one of the main projects for developer LevelUpStudio, updates and bugfixes come relatively frequently, especially when you participate in their beta program.”

So what about you?

Which Twitter client is your favorite? And why? With so many solid contenders to choose from, it’s sometimes hard to really decide why to use one app over another. The devil really is in the details (notifications or smoother animations, for example) and we want to know which app you’ve crowned king.

Foursquare just announced their 4.0 release for iOS, which includes a new feature called Radar that can automatically alert you about nearby things you might be interested in.

Foursquare describes the new Radar feature on their blog: Now, if you follow a list, like the 101 Best Dishes of 2011, foursquare will let you know when you’re next to one. Or you save that yoga studio to your To-Do List (because you really want to try it); we can remind you when you’re close. Or, better yet, if you’re driving home and three of your friends are getting together nearby, we’ll tell you so you can meet up. The app doesn’t even have to be open, it just works. We call it foursquare Radar, because it finds things nearby that you normally wouldn’t know about.

Locale calls location alerts "situtations". Foursquare calls their service Radar.

Other Android apps like Locale have already offered this kind of location-based artificial intelligence, but none of them have the number of users and business partners that Foursquare does.

Sometimes the Android version gets updated before the iOS version, but this latest Foursquare release is exclusive to iOS5 for now. We don’t have a release date yet, but Foursquare confirmed they are working on building Radar for other platforms like Android.

Foursquare is one of my most used apps when I travel out of town because of their current Explore feature. It magically suggests locations I might want to check out based on my previous check-ins, the check-ins of my friends and what’s popular among other users. You can filter by category (food, coffee, nightlight, etc.) or search for specific keywords like “fried chicken.”

Radar sounds pretty awesome because it takes things to the next level by automatically pushing out alerts based on your location. Dan Frommer of SplatF said this kind of software is able to “create a coincidence,” which I think is a perfect description. I’ve enjoyed quite a number of spontaneous experiences because of Foursquare, so I’m excited to see what new fun I can enjoy when this update hits Android.

If you previously tried Foursquare for Android in the early days and didn’t find much use for it, I strongly suggest installing the latest version from the Android Market while we wait on the 4.0 release. The number of small businesses that offer specials has continued to increase, and I’ve found the growing list of tips at most restaurants to be very helpful.

In order to make it easier to sign up, Google just rolled out a new feature that allows you to invite your friends by simply using a link. The new invite system is live now (just click invite friends in the right column) and Google upped the number of invitations to 150.

Most of our readers already signed up, but if you need an invite check out my latest tweet. If you are new to Google+ make sure to grab the updated Android app and then follow our staff.

Back in May when Netflix announced the release of its Android app, the company promised to quickly expand the list of supported devices. And it seems they’re staying true to that promise. Netflix has quietly rolled out support today for a whopping 16 new Android devices, bringing the total number of Netflix-ready Android devices to 24 (new ones in bold). These devices are:

Casio G’zOne Commando

DROID X by Motorola

DROID by Motorola

HTC Incredible

HTC Nexus One

HTC G2

LG Revolution

Samsung Nexus S

HTC DoubleShot

HTC Droid Incredible 2

HTC EVO 3D

HTC Thunderbolt

Lenovo IdeaPad Tablet

Motorola Atrix

Motorola Droid X2

Motorola Droid 2

Motorola DROID 3

Motorola DROID BIONIC

Samsung DROID Charge

Samsung EPIC 4G

Samsung Galaxy S

Samsung Galaxy S 4G

Samsung Fascinate

Samsung Nexus S 4G

If you’re the lucky owner of at least one of these 16 devices, head to the Android Market right now and download the Netflix app. Afterwards, come right back and tell us whether it’s working on your phone or not. We’re hearing reports of the app not working that well on some of these devices. However, I expect Netflix to roll out an update to its app in the near future that will fix most of these issues. Happy streaming!

No, you’re not dreaming. Spotify is finally coming to the United States. After more than two years of blessing our European brothers with their presence, Spotify is ready to bring their service to the US. If you’re interested in signing up for Spotify, you can do so by going here.

For those of you unfamiliar with Spotify, the company offers music streaming via desktop and mobile app. The service is free as long as you can put up with some ads and a listening limit of 10 hours/month. If you want to get rid of those limitations, you can upgrade to Spotify Unlimited for €4.99/month. If you want to enjoy premium features like offline support, enhanced sound quality and the Android app, you’ll have to upgrade to Spotify Premium for €9.99/month. Keep in mind these are European prices and could very well change for the US.

A few years ago when most of us were still managing our music libraries with iTunes, Window Media Player or manually, Spotify seemed like a dream come true. Imagine if you could play any song you wanted from any PC you wanted. Amazing. But then Grooveshark, Rdio, Google Music and Amazon’s Cloud Player arrived. All of a sudden, Spotify didn’t seem like that big of a deal.

Take for instance Grooveshark, which lets users listen to all the songs they want for free without any ads. In the rare case that the service doesn’t have the song you want, just upload the music file from your PC. If you want to use the service on your Android phone, upgrade to Grooveshark Anywhere for just $3/month or $30/year. Finally, Grooveshark is available as a web app, letting you access the service from any computer. In summary, Grooveshark is cheaper, better and simpler than Spotify. And it’s available right now.

With that said, I’m sure some of you are excited about using Spotify. If you aren’t, we’d like to know which music streaming service you’re already using.
