Super Bowl XLVI is coming this weekend and EA Mobile has lowered the price of Madden NFL 12 to $0.99 to celebrate the big game. Most of EA’s Android games have been disappointing compared to their iOS clones, and Madden appears no different. It’s not compatible with the new phones (like the Galaxy Nexus) and many users are reporting problems downloading the game’s content after their initial purchase.

However, some people seem to genuinely enjoy the game and it is $4 cheaper than the normal price, so you might want to give it a shot while the sale lasts. Just remember to visit the Android Market page and check out the user reviews filtered for your device to see what people are saying about the compatibility.

Madfinger Games has just released an expansion pack to their hit game Shadowgun. The new update, dubbed The Leftover, picks right up where the original left off and adds four new levels in addition to a lot of other goodies.

Shadowgun was first released as a Tegra Zone exclusive, but was later released as a separate download that supported more devices. Confusingly, Madfinger games has only released the The Leftover update for the non-Tegra version while the THD version has yet to receive it.

Expansion pack details include:

• The story directly follows the events of original Shadowgun
• 4 new levels
• New enemy creature
• New gun
• New type of gaming interaction
• New collectibles
• New soundtrack
• Lot of new graphics, animations and cutscenes

I loved the original Shadowgun when I first reviewed it, but I complained it was too short and there was no replay value since the game lacked a multiplayer mode. It’s nice to see Madfinger games release this add-on and they already announced a free multiplayer mode that is coming soon called Deadzone. The multiplayer pack will be released as a separate download when it’s ready and best of all it will be free of charge.

If you don’t hear from me for the next couple hours, I’ll be gaming on my ASUS Transformer Prime as I try to complete this add-on pack.

Gameloft’s highly anticipated first-person shooter Modern Combat 3 has finally hit the Android Market for $6.99. North Korea, Pakistan and Russia have all teamed up to launch a terrorist attack on the United States, and it’s your job as Corporal James Walker to lead your special forces into enemy territory and stop them.

Android gaming fans familiar with the prequels will know they contained a lot of corridor action, but Modern Combat 3 will be all about large scale war. The game producer describes MC3: Fallen Nation as delivering “super large scale fights, something that hasn’t been done on smartphones. We wanted to make a point that smartphone gaming can be as huge and awesome as on any other home console.”

The solo campaigns will include 13 missions with locations from Los Angeles to Pakistan and the multiplayer mode will greatly enhance the replay value. Expanded multiplayer features include cross-platform battles, up to 12 players, 6 maps and 6 different modes. The developers are so confident with their multiplayer options that they said MC3 includes “everything that the hardcore first person shooter gamer is looking for.”

Gameloft has a strong track record as one of the best Android game developers, so I had no problem handing them $6.99 for Modern Combat 3. It requires at least 1.37 GB of free storage space, so I’m still waiting for it to install, but it looks like a wide range of dual-core devices are supported, including the newly released Galaxy Nexus.

Those wishing to save a few bucks should also be able to grab the game by visiting www.gameloft.com on their mobile device. Gameloft normally prices their new titles at $4.99, but their online store has always frustrated me, and I’m ok with giving Google that extra $2.

Over a year ago we reported that Capcom would bring some of their popular franchises to Android and it appears that is finally starting to happen. LG is teaming up with Capcom and throwing a large scale multi-national championship encompassing Korea, Japan, and North America to promote Street Fighter IV HD.

Each participating country will be holding a qualifying tournament, and the finalists from each event will be flown to Seoul where they will battle it out on TV over 5 episodes on Korean cable game channel OnGameNet. For the US tournament, there is more than $21,000 up for grabs as prize money. The official event site just launched and we expect more details to come soon.

Street Fighter IV HD will be exclusively available on AT&T LG Nitro HD smartphone in the US and the LG Optimus LTE in Korea and Japan. Capcom has optimized the game for dual-core processors and it will be available with full HD graphics at 720p resolution.

The US qualifying tournament is scheduled for January 14th, but you can go and and sign-up now by visiting the contest site.

We don’t have any previews of the Android version quite yet, but I dub up an old Street Figher IV trailer as a bonus. Hopefully we will see more Capcom games coming to the Android Market early next year.

As promised, Rockstar Games just released Grand Theft Auto III to the Android Market. If you consider yourself of high maturity and have $4.99 laying around, I would suggest buying this game right now now. GTA3 first debuted on the Playstation 2 around 10 years ago, and it’s one of my all time favorite games.

I dumped a ton of hours into the original when I was a teenager, so I went and purchased it when it came out at midnight. I’ve only played it about one hour, but it has already exceeded my expectations. The game looks better than I remember, it runs smoothly on my Tegra 2 tablet, the touch controls work great, and I’m loving getting to know all the characters again.

Official gamepad support was included, but I didn’t get to test that out yet. I believe it works just fine with Xbox 360 controllers, and I’m crossing my fingers it works with our Logitech USB controller.

Features of GTA3 for Android include:

• Visually stunning updated graphics, character and vehicle models
• HD quality resolution
• Gameplay optimized for touch screen devices
• Custom controls for the mobile platform
• Countless hours of gameplay
• Gamepad Support for select USB controllers

Rockstar Games supported most of the newer high-end devices and they are promising to add more soon. The Galaxy Nexus should be the next device up and running, and we should also see it on the Transformer Prime, since we know they’re working on a Tegra 3 version.

The game is full of adult themes, so remember parents that you can change content filter settings and block your kids from downloading it.

Overall, I’m really pleased with Rockstar’s first Android effort, and I look forward to their next release. It’s been reported that a Max Payne remake is in the works, but we have yet to receive any real details.

This week NVIDIA announced via their Tegra Zone blog that Phosphor Game Studios is bringing their iOS thriller The Dark Meadow to Android early next year. Set in an abandoned hospital gone wild, the game looks to creep you out and blow you away with stunning visuals using Epic Game’s Unreal Engine.

Phosphor Game Studios has optimized their game to run on Tegra devices by incorporating atmospheric real-time lighting effects and high resolution textures. NVIDIA’s post doesn’t mention if this game is targeted for Tegra 2 or Tegra 3 devices, so hopefully it will run on both.

Look no further than Glu Mobile for the new king of freemium, action-packed games for Android. Hot on the heels of Blood & Glory, Contract Killer: Zombie, and Big Time Gangsta, which all achieved over 1 million downloads, Glu has just announced that a new shooter called Frontline Commando is headed to Android.

Frontline Commando is a 3rd person shooter that looks to deliver console quality visuals. In the teaser trailer that was released today we can see the hero using an arsenal of weapons to take down all kinds of enemies, including helicopters and jeeps. The duck and cover action sort of reminds me of Shadowgun, which played surprisingly well on a tablet.

This week Gameloft converted another one of their classic titles into a freemium game. Brother in Arms 2 Free+ is the latest game that Gameloft allows you to download for free and then use in-app purchases to unlock special items and speed up the game’s progress. Other recent freemium games include GT Racing Motor Academy, Let’s Golf 3 and Uno.

In Brother in Arms 2, players can earn dog tags and XP as they play that can be used to unlock tons of extra features and gear to customize their soldier, or purchase Medals to unlock them faster. As Gameloft says, “It’s up to you!”

Some of us are sick of the whole freemium craze and wish game developers would allow us to just purchase the title once, but all the Top Grossing Apps in the Android Market are still following the freemium model so don’t expect it to go away anytime soon.

Today Rockstar Games announced that their highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto III: 10 Year Anniversary Edition will be available on select Android devices starting Decmeber 15th for $4.99. The game pays tribute to the original PlayStation 2 version that launched 10 years ago, but it will feature boosted the graphics with newly created textures, more complex characters with higher polygon count, and higher resolution assets from the game’s PC release.

Don’t expect to enjoy the game, unless you have a newer dual-core device. The list of supported devices is mainly limited to those with Tegra 2 processors, but we expect more will be added at a later date.

Previous reports said that Rockstar Games was using a Tegra 3 tablet as their development platform, so we expect this game to be available on the upcoming Asus Transformer Prime. The game will feature on-screen controls, but we also hear that official gamepad support will be included so you play with an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 controller.

Today the guys from Wildbit Studios released their popular iOS game Paper Zombie for free to the Android Market. We get dozens of these types of press releases every day, but I went ahead and downloaded Paper Zombie to my phone and found it was a lot more fun than I expected. The easiest way I can describe the game is sort of like Fruit Ninja, but with zombies.
