EVO 3D and Sensation owners, rejoice! CyanogenMod 7, the leading name in Android Open Source Project ROMs, has finally been made available for your devices.

Released just yesterday, Alpha versions of the stock Android Gingerbread-based ROM can be downloaded from either XDA or RootzWiki. Both ROMs are in the same stage of development, and both include their fair share of bugs. But if you’ve been dying to get away from Sense and really let your hardware fly, the time has come. Early reports from users say that, despite the bugs present in both builds, they are stable enough to use on a daily basis.

In order to flash CyanogenMod 7 to your EVO 3D or Sensation, you must be rooted with S-Off. That means anyone who used HTC’s unlocking tool needs to start the process over and use Revolutionary this time. Using Revolutionary and flashing a custom ROM are tasks that need to be fully explored and researched before attempted.

For more information on either Alpha build and to download them, use the links below. Sensation, EVO 3D owners, are you taking the plunge?

How would you feel if you could run iOS apps on your Android device? How about your Windows or Linux PC? It’s undoubtedly been thought of before, but no one has made any real attempt at doing anything about it. Until now.

An extremely ambitious project has found its way to Kickstarter in search of some much needed funding. In theory, iEMU sounds relatively simple. Create an honest to goodness iOS emulator that runs on multiple platforms. The emulator will be based on the open-source emulator QEMU, with support for Samsung’s S5L8930. (Also known as the Apple A4).

At this point you might be thinking to yourself, “Emulators are old news.” There’s one for testing iOS apps on Mac, and you can play everything from NES to GameCube games on even the oldest PCs. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. And as a matter of fact, there is no iOS emulator for Mac. It’s a simulator, which isn’t the same as a virtualized version of an OS. Emulating all the hardware of a locked down device like the iPhone will be extremely hard. Project leader Chris Wade apparently already has the CPU working, but there’s still a long way to go. The GPU, multitouch, USB, cellular data and camera are just a few of the components that need to be cobbled together.

So why should you, an Android user, care? It’s not like iOS apps will be available on Android handsets right away (even though that is an end goal), but it’s a good start. A really good start. This project will lay the groundwork for making the ever-expanding Android OS that much more powerful. Imagine, if you will, a Nexus device that runs Ice Cream Sandwich and iOS apps. Or an HD2-esque device that can run Windows Mobile 8, Ubuntu, Android, Meego and emulate iOS well enough to take advantage of the Apple Appstore. That’s the next device I’d like to use. And this project is the first step.

Head on over to Kickstarter and, if nothing else, check it out. You can also keep up on the progress of iEMU here.

Well, that was fast. Not even four days after showing us some photos of Google TV 2.0 running on the Logitech Revue, the same guys at GTVhacker have now put together an easy-to-follow set of instructions on how to install the much-awaited update on your Revue.

As always, we’re not responsible for anything bad that happens to your device while following the instructions below. Keep in mind that this is in no way an official or final build of Google TV 2.0. It could very well break your Revue. Also, the Netflix app is missing from this build. If that’s something you use on a daily basis, you might want to wait for Google and Logitech to officially update your device.

On the other hand, if you don’t care about possibly breaking your Revue (they’re going for $99 these days) you might as well go ahead and follow these instructions:

Download the update file from here.

Copy the update.zip to a Fat32 formatted USB drive, place it in its root (ie /mnt/usb/update.zip or E:\update.zip).

Plug USB drive into Revue.

Fully unplug Revue.

Plug it back in, count to one. (A long one. Say, “One Mississippi”).

Hold down the connect button and keep it held. The Revue logo will come up, and the box will reboot. Your TV will lose signal and come back to the Revue logo. Let go of the button.

The GTV logo will then show up, with an arrow and a horizontal “barbershop scroll.” On your Revue’s keyboard, press the FN key (in yellow) and the left arrow (to the left of the OK button). It will then display a recovery menu.

Hit “Apply update from sdcard:/update.zip”

The box will verify the update and reboot. This is normal. It is installing an updated bootloader and recovery image (both heavily encrypted).

The box will come back on and flash the latest kernel and system files. Once this is done, the box will reboot again.

This bootup may take a few minutes. At first you will see the Revue logo, then the Google TV logo, then the “new” logo (a grey TV over a ball glowing red). Just wait it out.

Begin setup as normal. You may notice some crashes; this software is still in beta. Just force close and continue.

That was pretty easy, no? If you ran into any problems during the update, you can always let us know in the comments or ask the “experts” over at GTVhacker. Finally, I leave you with a video of the whole process from the guys at Channel Android. Happy hacking!

It’s been nearly two months since HTC first pledged to keep bootloaders unlocked, allowing for the installation of custom ROMs on their handsets. We knew the process wasn’t going to be an easy one, and unfortunately, little to no progress has been shown to the general public. A vague timeline was given at one point for the HTC Sensation, but the hacking and modding community wasn’t ready to just sit down and wait. Hacking team AlphaRevX has successfully designed full unlock, permanent root and s-off (unlocked bootloader) solutions for the Sensation.

The team is working to bring this to the public as soon as possible, along with a solution for the HTC EVO 3D, but no ETA has been given at this time. Going by the speed of how these things have worked in the past, don’t be surprised if it doesn’t take long at all. For the most accurate information regarding the progress of the unlock, always refer back to the origin of this information (a thread on the XDA Developers forums).

If you’re using a Sensation, or Evo 3D for that matter, and waiting for AlphaRevX’s complete s-off, which ROM do you hope to flash first? CyanogenMod 7? MIUI? Just a little less bloated Sense 3.0 ROM? Let us know in the comments below.

The Chinese have brought us many great things over the years – Bruce Lee, practically every toy you’ve played with as a kid, and Panda Express. Thanks to one of my many good friends on Twitter, (Eric McBride AKA @Dai323) I have found the next big thing from China. Its an Android ROM called MIUI.

Just when you think you’ve seen all that Android has to offer this company seemingly came out of nowhere to release one of the most original types of UI to ever to grace our handsets. Of course, you could argue that it is not TOO original seeing how it’s taken a lot of cues from Apple’s iOS but its the melding of these two great ideas into one that really makes it special.

I know there are some die hard Android fanboys out there that will consider this ROM an abomination and would rather spit on it than put it anywhere near their phone. But for people like me who love new things, innovation and ease of use, I have fallen in love with this Chinese ROM. Not only does it look beautiful but its also based off Android 2.2 AOSP and it flies like a bat out of hell.

Now, it does come from China and there are NUMEROUS devs working on localizing this (Cyanogen himself in talks with MIUI) for just about every popular Android phone out there. Even in its current state its not too hard to navigate familiar Android menus (I’d say 80% of the ROM is in English). This ROM also self updates so if you’re the paranoid type, you might wanna stay away. But if you decide to take the plunge and you wanna give it a shot, you might experience the freshest thing to happen to Android in quite awhile.

Special thanks once again to @IncredibleDoes for bringing us this quick port and @KingKlick92 for helping me get this running on my Evo.

HTC is completely revamping their Sense UI and taking it to a whole new level. What started out as a merely a skin on top of Android is now turning into a whole new level of service with all of your phone’s media, texts and data being backed up to their soon to be released HTCSense.com.

I’ve always been a fan of Sense since day 1 and it was the reason I went through with rooting my G1 in the first place. I know there has always been a lot of criticisms when it comes to Sense and it definitely isn’t without its naysayers. Whether you are a “Sense Hater” or not, I think HTC has been proving themselves in not only firmware updates but by continuing to enhance the user experience.

Out of all other companies, I feel like HTC is listening. Now, with the addition of themes, super-quick 2 second boot time and the new HTCSense.com, I think Sense is better than ever and definitely pushing the Android OS further.

In this video I’m using a port of the Desire HD ROM that was given to us from @IncredibleDoes on Twitter and XDA. Although buggy, I’m using the ROM to give people a taste of what to expect from HTC Sense in the coming months. I cannot wait until we see this official update from HTC!

The only requirement is that the ROM is unodexed (most of the time they are). If you’re not sure, there will be no harm done in trying. I hope this mod will help you better customize your phone to your liking and further enhance your experience within Android.

Want an in-depth look at the latest Sense UI? Check out Christopher's video for a hands-on preview of T-Mobile's new Espresso UI for Android 2.1.

Binary over on XDA got a hold of the system dump from the upcoming myTouch 3G Slide and Domenuk was able to port it to his Mytouch 3G/G1.

I am SO surprised that even in its early state you can see how well this runs on my very limited G1. This may very well be the first SNAPPY 2.1 ROM for the G1.

The myTouch 3G Slide will be T-Mobile’s FIRST phone with Android 2.1 and HTC’s updated Espresso Sense UI and should be released sometime in June.

T-Mobile went to great lengths to make Android a little more user friendly to mainstream customers and not just power users like myself. It’s also more appealing to currently displaced Sidekick users and I feel like this is who T-Mobile is trying to target with this new phone in their myTouch 3G series.

After playing with a leaked ROM, it is easy to see that T-Mobile had a LOT more influence with this Android phone than any others before it. You can see their apps strewn about this phone and although most are pretty useless, I can see how some Android virgins may find them useful.

One I particularly liked was the myTouch Music app which is essentially a streaming radio station with the top 100 hits and you can even skip ahead to tracks. Nice! Most of the others were apps that overlapped with a lot of other fuctions already found on Android (like Settings). Some even seemed like T-Mobile trying to cash in on some of the more unsuspecting Android newcomers.

I did like how Swype came preloaded as well as HTC IME.

Overall, this ROM on the G1 is faster than ANY other 2.1 Sense UI ROMs I have tried. It’s crazy. Especially given the fact the myTouch Slide is much more powerful than the G1. This Sense UI is a little different than tradition Sense in that it’s technically a new version called Espresso. You can see some of the graphical changes such as the bubbles around the apps. Again, I can see what HTC was going for with this and trying to get a more uniform look to the app icons.

Either you love it, or hate it. I personally don’t mind it at all.

As of now, the only things not working in this ROM are WiFi, Bluetooth, Browser and Gmail. Although, I’m sure all of these will be fixed before I even finish this sentence. The Android community has been really great in pulling together and getting everything up and running. So much progress in so little time!

Here’s the link for the the version I’m using at the moment. Look for the Beta2 link.

Metamorph is an app that lets you pick apart pieces of the UI and theme.

Have you ever seen a theme online and thought, “Why can’t I just have the app drawer tab and leave the rest stock?” Or, “I wish I could change my bootscreen and leave the rest alone.”

Well, developer Stericson has found the answer. He’s a very well known dev around these parts and you can thank him for making an app called Metamorph.

Metamorph is basically an app that lets you pick apart pieces of the UI on your custom ROM and theme it however you like! So you can pick apart the pieces of themes you like and combine them to make a whole new theme catered to your liking.

The app can be a little tricky if you’re using it for the first time but that’s why I’m going to walk you through it and gain full control over the look of your favorite ROM.

First thing to do is download Metamorph from the Market (the donate version works better than the free one).

Then find a theme (or part of a theme) that SUPPORTS Metamorph.

Here’s a list of them on XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showt…

If you want the Espresso theme by Ultra Spikey that I used in this video: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showt…

Always perform a Nandroid or save using SwitchROM/BART before modifying any part of your ROM in case of incompatibilities.

To apply a theme, make a folder on the root of your sd card and name it “AndroidThemes”.

Then find the theme (or part of the theme) that’s compatible with your ROM and download the zip file.

Extract the zip file of the theme into the “AndroidThemes” folder.

Now, open your Metamorph app, click on the “Existing Themes” button and look through the folders until you find the .thm file.

Select it and you will be asked to apply the whole theme or parts of the theme (if its a FULL theme).

Select “Apply All” or pick the specific parts and you’re all set!

Note: Some themes or parts of a theme may require a reboot.

That wasn’t so hard, was it? Originally I was pretty hard on Metamorph simply beause I didn’t know how to use it. But now that I do, I think its a such a great idea and will provide a better user experience for anyone looking to customize the look of their custom ROM.

Thanks to all the awesome themers out there! You guys do amazing things and we all appreciate it!

Special thanks to Stericson for making this app so we could all gain a better user experience from our phones.

Christopher is back with the new fastest ROM ever for your G1.

Make your G1 feel like a Nexus One! Okay… maybe that was going too far. LOL. But this WILL make your G1 feel BETTER than new.

As always, you will need root in order to flash custom ROMs. ESPECIALLY custom Spanish ones.

This ROM comes to you courtesy of Spain and well known developer Super@tmel from HTCMania. I don’t know what that guy put in his bowl of “Kernel Flakes” but this really is the fastest ROM I have yet to experience.

Now, I didn’t believe the hype surrounding this ROM. I too was an unbeliever. You always hear of new developers touting their ROMs as the fastest or how some kid made a ROM that can cook you a hotpocket in 30 seconds flat. Well, I am pleased to say that I was wrong with this ROM.

Being a flash junkie myself, I have been around the ROM block and can honestly say this is not placebo. Linpack alone can support my claim and even if it didn’t, I would still stand behind this ROM. Even with NO RAM hack this ROM beats the competition and still supports 3D gaming.

My only comlaint is that I wish some devs and themers would give this ROM a little bit of love. It is definitely an eyesore and it would be nice to see this packed up with the correct APN settings. A stock Eclair 2.1 theme wouldn’t hurt either.

Installation Instructions

Disclaimer: This is a European ROM and although its working great for ME, some weirdness may be likely as a result. As always, wipe data, wipe ext and repair ext PRIOR to flashing/installing. Don’t forget, Nandroid is your best friend so backup yo stuff UP!

Update: MLIGN gave this some love and fixed all the broken stuff (Correct APN settings with Data, 3G, MMS. English keyboard as well).

Download: http://is.gd/aVBdp

For best results, use an ext2 partition. It is much faster than ext3 and ext4 and doesn’t journal itself (thanks Kmobs!) You may want to consider repartitioning.

This ROM will fly but only if you jam out to some Spanish music while its flashing. Weird, huh?

Setup is pretty easy.

Apps2SD is not enabled by default so you will have to turn it on.

You can do this by opening the preinstalled SupSetup 4 app.

Press the big “S” to continue.

Now select Options and then select App2SD and LinuxSwap.

Check off App2SD and exit the app.

Once exited reboot your phone and apps2sd will be enabled.

Google Maps was removed cuz of problems with upgrading so download from the Market now!

Now that’s all there is to it! Flash this ROM to see for yourself that there is nothing faster on the G1. Enjoy!
