Adobe debuts new Touch Apps; Photoshop Touch leads the way

Today at Adobe MAX, the company announced the next steps for their insanely popular photo editing software Photoshop: an Android version of the application, called Photoshop Touch.

Featuring a ton of touch- and tablet-optimized controls, Adobe Photoshop Touch aims to be your one-stop-shop for photo editing on touchscreen devices. Currently in production for Android tablets, Photoshop Touch possesses both well-known and upcoming features that amateurs and professionals alike will be able to take full advantage of. Not only will Photoshop Touch bring layers and filter brushes to tablets, but you’ll also be able to utilize any built-in camera for things like fills, custom selection tools, edge aware painting, edge refinement, color adjustment, text, Photoshop-compatible file formats and an abundance of social integrations.

You can select photos to edit from Facebook and upload them to back to the service where you can view comments from inside the Photoshop app. There’s also integration with Google Image search and Adobe Creative Cloud. Adobe Creative Cloud allows you to upload your work from your tablet and make additional changes through Photoshop CS5.

Perhaps the most exciting thing about Photoshop Touch is the price. It’s only going to cost $9.99.

Photoshop Touch isn’t the only Adobe Touch application in the works, but right now it’s playing center stage. Adobe Debut, Proto, Collage, Ideas and Kuler will all be released for Android at just $9.99 in the near future. No exact release date has been made public, but it shouldn’t be long now.

Adobe Photoshop.com Mobile: Why did they bother?

Photoshop is a very powerful graphic editing tool. So powerful and universally used in fact that we now have the verb “photoshopped”. This app, though, is not Photoshop as many in the press have called it. It is Photoshop.com Mobile and that distinction is important. Photoshop is amazing. Photoshop.com is horrible. And now with Adobe Photoshop.com Mobile you can take that horridness with you!

Photoshop.com is Adobe’s answer to Flickr and Picasa. It’s a place to upload, organize and share your photos. It also offers some basic editing of photos but nothing like what Photoshop offers.

As an image editor Photoshop.com drives me nuts. For something that is supposed to be aimed at the average user it is not intuitive, doesn’t offer a lot in terms of editing (which is imprecise at best) and with it being online, is slow.

Unfortunately, the mobile app is all that and less.

The editing tools are limited to orientation (crop, straighten, rotate and flip), some color adjustments (exposure, saturation, tint, and convert to black & white), and a soft focus effect. I would have liked some simple effects that people would want and need like a red-eye remover or being able to add text, captions or metadata to the photos.

The ability to upload photos to Photoshop.com is great for those with limited space on their phone. A big oversight though is not being able to download your online photos to your device for offline viewing, especially when you consider that there is an option to set online photos as your wallpaper.

And at this point you are probably wondering “Okay, what else is there.” Well, that’s it. Oh wait, it runs in the background constantly. Does that count as a feature?

If you use Photoshop.com (Please let me know why you are using it) this is the best (only?) app to send your camera-phone pictures to your account. If you aren’t a Photoshop.com user there is nothing here to entice you to start (and probably a few more reasons to avoid it).
