While walking the floor at CTIA09, we spotted the RealVNC logo and wandered over to see what they had to offer for Android. Turns out a lot. RealVNC was showing off their new cross-platform desktop to mobile control scheme. Using your desktop, you can wirelessly connect to and control a mobile device complete with touch input and hard key access.

The potential uses here are many. A company could use RealVNC control at an enterprise level to assist with technical issues on their employee’s phone or provide support for a confused user. The entire screen of the mobile device is shown in real time on the desktop, giving the help desk or service tech instant insight into the device without needing to be anywhere near it. Check out the video below for a quick preview of the service.

We just got out of the CTIA keynote. We heard from the CEO of CTIA, Steve Largent, the chairman of the FCC, Julius Genachowski, as well as the CEO of AT&T Mobility, Ralph de la Vega. De la Vega laid out 10 facts about the U.S mobile market and we took shots of all the slides (except fact 5, it was a video about innovation). Below you’ll find a few highlights or you can view the whole set on flickr.

Moto asks devs to create art for prizes.

We are live at the Motodev Summit waiting for the keynote to start. Motorola has setup a “Rock your droid” contest encouraging developers and members of the press to create their own Android characters.

All colors of clay, construction paper, scissors, glue, pipe cleaners, and more were available to create 2D and 3D droids. Motorola is giving away 4 Cliq phones as prizes to the most creative and most humorous creations so Clark and I decided to enter.

I went for funny and made a fat droid eating a donut. Clark went creative (and tried to suck up to the judges) with a huge Motorola logo coming out of his droid’s head. We will have to wait till tonight when winners are announced at the Motodev party, but at least we got free shirts for entering.

Google and Verizon schedule surprise press conference.

UPDATE: Google and Verizon just finished their press conference and while they didn’t announce any new handsets, they did announce a strategic partnership. This is great news considering our recent poll which showed Verizon needs to gain the Android community’s trust.

Highlights of the agreement include:

Multiple Android handsets (to be announced in a few weeks)

Android market will ship on all devices

Verizon will support Google Talk (unlike AT&T)

For full details you can view the official press release.

It is getting late and we are in San Diego to cover the Motodev Summit which is taking place in the morning. We were about to go to bed early when we received the following email.

VERIZON WIRELESS AND GOOGLE LIVE WEBCAST 10 A.M. EST TODAY (October 6, 2009)

WHO: Verizon Wireless, the nation’s leading wireless provider, and Google™

WHAT: Verizon Wireless and Google will host a webcast today. Speakers include:

Lowell McAdam, chief executive officer, Verizon Wireless

Eric Schmidt, chairman and chief executive officer, Google

Hmmm, I wonder what it could be?

What are the odds that Google and Verizon make a major announcement only hours before Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha will be giving a keynote at the Motodev Summit?

We have no idea what the Google/Verizon announcement is, but we will let you guys debate it over the next 9 hours.

Tomorrow, Taylor and Clark Wimberly (the brothers behind Android and Me) are leaving on a week-long road trip to the west coast. We are headed to San Diego to attend the Motodev Summit and the CTIA Wireless IT and Entertainment Expo to track down any Android hardware, apps, tips, and rumors we can find. To make it really fun we are bringing you guys along for the ride. We are going to live blog the whole trip using this site, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, and Tumblr.

What to watch for

We are using all our spare time on the trip to review apps, post videos, and talk Android. AndroidAndMe.com will be updated multiple times a day with news, app and game reviews, Android videos, everything you are used to seeing on this site. To mark updates as being part of the Road Trip, images attached to each post will have a tiny ‘Android Road Trip’ label in the bottom left corner (like you see on this page). AndroidRoadTrip.com will feature updates from our Twitter accounts (@androidandme and @clarklab), photos from our Flickr page, videos from our YouTube channel, and posts from this site. For non-Android content (aka travel and food posts), you can follow our Android and Me Tumblr.

We know that we are going to be all over the place, but we didn’t want to flood the main site with travel posts or make anyone read a bunch of content they didn’t want to see. By spreading it around we hoped to allow you to choose your level of involvement. If you couldn’t care less what we are up to on the road, just keep your eyes on the main site. Want to bug us on Twitter and watch our videos the whole way? Follow our Road Trip and Tumblr sites.

Day 1 – Austin, TX to El Paso, TX

We are leaving from Austin, TX around noon on October 3, headed west 575 miles to El Paso, TX. 450 miles of that will be a straight shot on I-10. In El Paso we will be staying on the west side of town in a La Quinta (only the classiest for us). We’ve got a few tips on places to eat (Chico’s here we come) but could always use more. A solid suggestion could land you a free t-shirt. Keep reading for more info…

Day 2 – El Paso, TX to Tucson, AZ

On the morning of Oct 4, we are going to drive a much shorter 315 miles from El Paso, TX to Tucson, AZ. Again, we’ll be riding I-10 west, this time through the Southern tip of New Mexico and Arizona. On Google Maps the route looks peppered with parks and a National Forest which hopefully will lead to some scenery. If you know where we can find the goods, send us a tip on twitter.

Day 3 – Tucson, AZ to San Diego, CA

Oct 5 we wake in Tucson, AZ and continue west another 400 miles to our destination in San Diego, CA. We are staying at the Holiday Inn in Bayside, about 4 miles from the convention center. On Oct 6 we will be attending the Motodev Summit and on Oct 7 and 8 we will be at CTIA.

Send us Tips, Win Free Shirts

Rep Android

We’ve got a ton of stuff planned for the trip (app reviews, video updates, blogging, photos, etc) but we’ve got a long way to go and know we aren’t immune to getting bored.

This is where you come in. We need help finding restaurants, roadside attractions, crazy retail spaces, anything worth checking out. To encourage you guys to send in the tips, we are going to give away three of our new Android t-shirts to the three readers who give us the best suggestions.

They won’t be for sale for another few weeks but anyone with a killer tip can have one earlier. We’ve got sizes S – 2XL and will select three winners, one for the best restaurant, one for the best attraction, and one for the best travel tip (wildcard category). You can use the following links to send us suggestions on Twitter, or you can leave a comment here.

CTIA is an international industry trade group that holds several trade shows a year. Traditionally their spring show is held in Las Vegas and then a second show is hosted later in the fall. This year the CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment 2009 show is taking place in San Diego, California on October 7-9, 2009.

We were already planning to attend the Motodev Summit and decided at the last second to hit up the CTIA event since we would be in town. I was told that the CTIA fall show was smaller than the Las Vegas show and not to expect many new product announcements. However, we kept hearing that 15-20 new Android devices would be available by year’s end and I thought maybe a few would make an appearance at this event.

Many trade shows this year were expected to be coming out parties for Android, but they have disappointed so far. CTIA is the last big event of the year and it appears numerous Android phones will be present. All of the major United States carriers will be attending and showing off their latest phones for the holiday shopping season.

Several industry leaders will be giving keynote speeches including some members of the Open Handset Alliance.

Ralph de la Vega, President & CEO of AT&T Mobilty

David Ko, SVP of Yahoo! Mobile

John Donovan, CTO of AT&T

Dr. Irwin Mark Jacobs, Co-Founder of Qualcomm Incorporated

Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, CEO of Qualcomm Incorporated

I have no idea what topics they will discuss, but I am really looking forward to hearing what Ralph de la Vega has to say. AT&T has been sitting on the Android fence for awhile, but he said they would consider using Android when it was open and they could remove the Google apps. I expect we will see AT&T update their stance on Android at this event.

New Android phones we are hoping to see include:

AT&T – ??? (Surprise announcement)

Sprint – HTC Hero, Samsung phone?

T-Mobile – Motorola Cliq, Huawei Pulse?

Verizon – Motorola Sholes

Samsung Mobile tipped us they were announcing a new phone, but we don’t know what it is yet. Motorola is holding their Motodev Summit the day before CTIA and we expect both the Cliq and Sholes will make an appearance. HTC has invited us to a Hero party and I expect someone might have a new Tattoo on hand. I’m also crossing my fingers that some of the new high end HTC phones might be revealed.

Check back later this week for new details on our roadtrip to California and more info on CTIA.

Samsung Mobile will announce a new device at CTIA in October.

We will be attending this year’s CTIA Wireless I.T. and Entertainment and expect to get our hands on several new Android devices. Samsung Mobile just sent us an invitation to attend a special announcement, but didn’t give any details on which device they will show. Upcoming phones from Samsung include the Omnia II, Instinct HD, and Instinct Q. Any phone could make an appearance, but I hope we see the Android-powered Instinct Q.

The Instinct HD is expected to launch on Sprint soon and I think it will be available before this event. The Omnia II is coming to Verizon and already available for preorder on Amazon. Little is known about the Instinct Q and this leads me to believe we might see it on October 7, 2009. Check out the invite below and let us know which phone you think Samsung Mobile will unveil.
