ShopSavvy is the longest running barcode scanner application for Android, launching in the first wave of apps for the Android Market. Since it was released, it has truly been one of Android’s must-have applications. Today, Big in Japan has officially released the fourth version of ShopSavvy, which brings a revamped user interface that mimics the look of the new Android market.

Version 4.0 also brings the following new additional features:

Live stream of recent scans using the ShopSavvy application (more on that in the next section)

Better scanning technology which allows for full 360 degree scanning so you can scan the image from any direction

Enhanced sharing features such as sharing info via Twitter and Facebook

Export your historical scans to Microsoft Excel or Apple iWorks

ShopSavvy Deals – a service which searches your historical scans to look for price changes at all retailers (including if a purchased product drops in price after you’ve bought it, alerting you whether you can take in your receipt for a refund of the difference)

The new homescreen for ShopSavvy 4 features a live feed of user scans from around the United States. This feature pulls in both the item name, the city in which the item was scanned, and the best available price for that item. Users can simply click on any item in the live feed, and it will scan both online and your local retailers to find the best available price. Think the live feed is a little too big-brother-y? Rest half-assured. Users can switch to the standard personal historical scans view in the settings, but there doesn’t appear to be a way to prevent your scans from showing up in other users’ live stream feeds.

All things considered, Shopsavvy version 4 is an awesome update which should please ShopSavvy users once you get used to the new layout and features. If you haven’t yet checked out ShopSavvy on your Android device, you may want to download the free application now.

Don’t like the new UI update? The folks at ShopSavvy have also released GoCart, which is basically a legacy edition of their most recent pre-4.0 update release (version 3.6).

Well, what have we here? It seems that popular mega-retailer Target has quietly released an Android application into the market. Though the 1.0.1 release is still fairly basic, it still manages to sport all the basics people might need from an Android app, and will hopefully only get better with time.

The main screen has three ways to view Target content; users can view the weekly ad for their region, view clearance items, or college essentials. I assume the college essentials will be a seasonal topic that will change from time to time, but without an official press release (that I can find anyway), it’s a bit too soon to tell.

After perusing a bit through some items, it doesn’t appear that you can purchase anything directly through the Target application, but you can view the item’s availability at nearby stores (right down to the aisle you can find the product on), and get directions and store hours for your store of choice. This feature could come in pretty handy, though it would be very nice to see them add the ability to purchase items from directly within the application.

One additional feature the Target app integrates that is a bit surprising is a barcode scanner. I don’t know what use the barcode scanner is going to have other than looking up a price for something that might not have a price displayed, but the inclusion of the scanner is enough to pique my curiosity. I don’t believe Target would go the route of allowing customers to price compare like a ShopSavvy or a Barcode Scanner would, so time will tell whether or not the barcode scanner will actually come in handy for anything.

The Target app is currently available in the Android Market for the low, low price of free. Head on over to the market and download it today! Make sure to let us know what you think about the Target application in the comments.

As we have now reached the month of August, summer is coming to a close and millions of college students around the country are cramming in as much fun as they can before they need to once more start thinking about heading back to school.

Popular textbook money-saving search engine CampusBooks has released an Android application which hopes to make the back-to-school transition a bit easier on college students. The CampusBooks Android app brings the power of the CampusBooks.com textbook buying and selling hub right to your Android device.

Want to make sure you have the best price when purchasing a textbook? How about at the end of the semester when it’s time to sell those books back? Simply use the embedded barcode scanner to scan the textbook’s barcode, and your phone’s GPS features allows CampusBooks to provide the local cheapest buying price (and highest sellback price) around.

Now, I know what you’re thinking; Barcode Scanner or ShopSavvy allow you to do this relatively easily as well, and you’re partially correct. Though these applications allow you to find the lowest buying price of books, in my experience they have been hit-or-miss with textbooks, and they don’t offer the ability to find the highest price for sellbacks. Because the CampusBooks application specializes in textbook, it simply provides more functionality in this area than the generic barcode scanner applications can.

So whether you’re a college-bound student this fall, or returning for another glorious year, head over to the market and try out CampusBooks and see if it makes your bookbuying experience that much easier. Let us (and other readers) know what you think of the CampusBooks Android application by leaving a comment below.

Best of all, it’s free.

Both programs make use of an open source software from ZXing (“Zebra Crossing”). Other Android developers can use intents to bring the functionality of Barcode Scanner into their own program. One example of this would be Torrent Droid, which was the winner of our first Android Bounty.

Sharing Information with a QR Code.

In addition to normal UPCs, ZXing has added support for the following codes.

UPC-A and UPC-E

EAN-8 and EAN-13

Code 39

Code 128

QR Code

Data Matrix (‘alpha’ quality)

ITF

A QR Code (“Quick Response”) is a 2D barcode that can store much more information than a standard UPC. Inside a QR Code you can find text, hyperlinks, contact information, geo location, and more. They are capable of storing up to 250 characters. QR Codes have become common in Japan, but have yet to take off in the United States.

One of the cool uses of QR Codes can be found via the share option in Barcode Scanner for Android. By pressing menu then share, users are able to easily send contact infomation, bookmarks, and text from their clipboard to other G1 phones. Users can create their own QR codes from one of the free online generators.

Scanning a QR Code From the Web

After you create your own QR code, there are many creative uses. They can be placed on the back of business cards so that your contact information can be scanned to someone’s phone in seconds. Advertisers can place them in print media to send customers to their product website. Bands could place them on the back of a CD case allowing you to hear an audio preview or purchase concert tickets. Secret messages can be hidden inside for people to find.

I’m already planning to place a QR code on my next order of business cards. We might even use them in some future promotions too. What other innovative uses can you come up with?
