PlayStation Suite has just gotten a step closer to becoming more relevant. Sony will be opening a beta version of the PlayStation Suite SDK, which will improve the lack-luster variety of games available. Now that Sony is in charge of its mobile department, the company is set to make some major improvements. And considering Sony’s past, gaming will definitely be in mind.

The Suite’s beta SDK will open up next month. There is already a beta SDK available, but it was only available to select content developers in the US, UK and Japan. This SDK beta will expand its horizons to the rest of the world, allowing more developers to create original content for PlayStation Certified devices once the official product is released.

The final SDK is set to be released “later this year” at a cost of $99. After that, we will start seeing more games coming to PlayStation Suite, leaving Crash Bandicoot in the past, again. Both major and small game developers will be able to take advantage of this, so we are expecting to see some good games coming. Especially since there is a probability that the PS Vita will also be able to access such content.

The most exciting part is the idea that we could be starting to see some much better games drop on Android. Currently, the Android Market has very few “console quality” games, while many devices could handle PSP and PS2 content. If Sony managed to get some PSP (or even PS Vita) games in there, the tables would turn very quickly.

Now let’s just hope that some good developers take part in this. Do you think this project will become a success? Could it grow enough to compete with Tegra Zone and GameCommand?

Show Press Release
Open Beta Version of SDK to be Released in April, Official Version to be Released Later This Year

TOKYO, March 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced that it will release the open beta version of PlayStation®Suite SDK*(1) to content developers in April 2012 and the official version later this year. Through the introduction of these SDKs, SCE will offer a more streamlined content development environment for content developers — from large game development companies to small, independent shops — and further expand the world of PlayStation® to open operating system based portable devices.

In November 2011, SCE released the closed beta version of PlayStation®Suite SDK to limited content developers in Japan, United States and the United Kingdom. The upcoming open beta version incorporates their feedback and will dramatically enhance convenience and efficiency of the content development environment. The phased rollout of the open beta version will start in April 2012 free of charge and expand target countries beyond Japan, United States and the United Kingdom. Developers will also be able to conduct performance verification of their content developed with the open beta version on PlayStation®Vita.

SCE will also release the official version of PlayStation®Suite SDK at $99 US annually later this year, allowing content developers to have their content distributed through the PlayStation®Store*(2) on a commercial basis. Through the official version, content developers will also be able to seamlessly continue to develop content which was created with the open beta or the closed beta versions.

Furthermore, SCE will be adding content for PlayStation®Suite in Japan, United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, and Australia. The phased rollout of the update will start later this year. The phased rollout will include improving the PlayStation®Suite presence on PlayStation®Store for users who want to enjoy a variety of content with ease and convenience on their PlayStation™Certified devices. SCE will also deliver content created through the official version of PlayStation®Suite SDK after the necessary procedure is completed.

As of March 7, 2012, the line-up of PlayStation™Certified devices includes Xperia™ arc, Xperia™ acro, Xperia™ PLAY, Xperia™ acro HD, Xperia™ S, Xperia™ ion*(3) from Sony Mobile Communications AB, and “Sony Tablet” S and “Sony Tablet” P from Sony Corporation. SCE will continue to further accelerate the expansion of PlayStation™Certified devices.
Through PlayStation®Suite, SCE will deploy various measures to support content developers in their business, and expand the PlayStation® entertainment experience on an open operating system.

*(1) Software Development Kit is a set of development tools and software libraries. Developers are able to obtain this SDK by signing a license agreement with SCE.
*(2) Users can download vast digital content including games through PlayStation Store for PS3, PSP, PS Vita and PS Certified devices.
*(3) Model name may vary by region.

We have to give props to Sony for releasing an alpha Android 4.0 ROM for testing last December, and the Japanese manufacturer has just given us a bit more ice cream sandwich goodness. Today, Sony has released the beta version of this ROM, meaning that the update is just a bit closer to reaching Sony’s Xperia devices.

This update comes with much more functionality than its predecessor, but it still lacks very important features. Added features include activated GSM modem, FM radio, updated UI, beefed up lock screen and a quick dialer. Being able to access GSM networks is probably the most important, as those that use this ROM will now be able to make calls which, you know, is what a phone is meant to do.

There are important features that are lacking, though, since Sony is still waiting for approval in order to activate them. Such include WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, as well as access to Google Apps including the Android market. Hopefully Google will give them the okay soon, and Android 4.0 will be in the wild before too long.

This ROM is aimed at developers, as Sony does not intend this incomplete ROM to be used as a daily driver. Regardless, it could be fun for the more adventurous Android user to check out what Ice Cream Sandwich will be like on Sony hardware. If you happen to be the proud owner of an Xperia Arc S, Neo V or Ray, this ROM is available for your flashing needs (not the regular Arc and Neo).

Needless to say that there is a risk of bricking your device, so be careful if you want to try this as no one takes responsibility if something bad happens, and you might be left on your own. With the disclaimer out of the way, you can go ahead try this one out if you need your Ice Cream Sandwich fix.

In order to test the ROM, users have to unlock the bootloader with Sony’s official tool, have the latest software version (4.0.2.A.0.42) and follow the instructions at Sony’s developer blog. Check out the demo video to see how this Android 4.0 beta ROM looks, and let’s hope the final version comes soon.

Are any of you trying this? Let us know how your experience goes in the comments.

If you have over-sized fingers like me, you’re probably a big fan of Swype. For those of us who like the alternative keyboard, Swype is really a life saver. That’s why I’m happy to tell you that it is now getting even better.

The guys and gals behind the popular keyboard just pushed out version 3.0 of Swype Beta. Although the page seems to be down right now, you can get the app here once they get everything in order. This new version of Swype brings a handful of new features, like Predictive Tap and a horizontal word suggestion bar.

But most importantly, Swype now supports Honeycomb devices. Which you can even change the position of now. As you can see in the video below, you can place the Swype keyboard on the left, center or right of your tablet. While not the most mind-blowing feature ever, I bet some people out there will find it useful. This new version of Swype also adds support for a few more resolution sizes. Which now includes: HVGA, WVGA, FWVGA, QVGA, WQVGA, WSVGA and qHD.

What say you, is this update enough to make you a Swype believer? Or will you stay a stock keyboard kind of guy? Or maybe you use another alternative keyboard? Let us know in the comments. Meanwhile, you can watch these overdramatic and funky demo videos from Swype and get your stroke and poke on.

Having used SwiftKey as a primary keyboard since last year, it is safe to say it is my personal favorite. It does look a bit “iPhone-ish,” but the thing pretty much reads your mind. Typing can become such an easier, faster process with a keyboard like this. Today, TouchType LTD has released a beta version of their new keyboard, SwiftKey X, and this time it is trying to get much more intimate with you.

The original SwiftKey is like a new friend, you need to spend time with it and develop that relationship for things to work good. It learns your typing habits as you use it, as well as from the messages on your phone. The guys from TouchType have made this bond much quicker and personal, now that SwiftKey X actually has the ability to grab information from more sources up-front.

The application can be granted permission to access your Facebook, Gmail, and Twitter account. We know that security and privacy are very big topics within the smartphone world right now, but sometimes one must get out of that comfort zone to take advantage of many of these services. If you choose to give SwiftKey X access to these accounts, it will go ahead and analyze your messages. This will ensure that that “bond” between you and your keyboard strengthens better and faster, meaning quicker and deeper understanding of your personal typing habits.

If that was not enough typing goodness for you, TouchType has also added “Personal input modeling” and “Typing Styles.” Not only is SwiftKey X learning from your language habits, but also from your physical typing tendencies:

Improvements to Fluency include ‘Personal Input Modeling’, which dynamically alters the touch-sensitive regions of keys based on how accurate your typing is. There are also two new ‘typing styles’ – Precise and Rapid – which ensure predictions and corrections work in harmony with the way you type.SwiftKey X Press Release

As you can see in the screenshots below, SwiftKey’s learning system and other functional improvements are not the only new additions. The keyboard can now be customized to look different, which is something I have actually been wanting to do since the beginning (As you probably noticed in the first paragraph).

This product is in beta right now, so it may very well not be perfect. SwiftKey is a great product though, so we can assume that successor will follow its footsteps. I personally highly recommend that you try it out. If Beta testing isn’t your thing, though, you can check out SwiftKey for $1.99 from the Android Market (there is also a free version available). Take a look at the video, images, and press release after the break, and go check out how well SwiftKey X reads your mind! As always, we like to know your opinions, so what do you think of the all new SwiftKey X? Do you prefer the original SwiftKey? What keyboard do you currently use?

SWIFTKEY X – This time, it’s personal.

LONDON, UK — Android™’s most popular keyboard app took a major leap forward Friday, as its successor SwiftKey™ X launched in public beta.

The world’s first ‘Social AI’ keyboard can analyze your Facebook®, Twitter® and Gmail™ sent messages in the cloud and use these insights to offer smart, personal and instant phrase prediction from first use.

It builds on the success of developer TouchType’s first AI keyboard, SwiftKey. The technology company was named among Google’s ‘Top 150 Developers’ on Android earlier this month, with its award-winning app consistently among the most-downloaded, highest-rated on the platform.

“SwiftKey has already been a remarkable success on Android; it’s been downloaded more than a million times and is used to send over 100 million messages each month,” TouchType’s CEO and co-founder, Jonathan Reynolds, said.

“Thanks to our unique text entry technology, we’ve achieved many accolades, including being asked to demonstrate alongside Google at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, winning the Mobile Premier Award for best app while there, and being embedded in phone-maker INQ’s flagship Android handset,” Reynolds said.

“But with SwiftKey X, we’re taking a quantum leap forward. This new beta improves on the original in every way, and it will stun those who try it.”

SwiftKey X was built in collaboration with TouchType’s community of passionate ‘VIP’ users over the past six months, giving the new app a combination of cutting-edge innovation and hotly requested feature improvements.

“When engineering SwiftKey X, we’ve been continually inspired by the stream of excellent ideas that have come from our VIPs,” TouchType’s CTO and co-founder, Dr. Ben Medlock, said.

“This new app is built from a much clearer understanding of how our users interact with their devices. With SwiftKey X, from the word go it’ll feel like your phone just knows what you want to say.”

In addition to cloud-based personalization, SwiftKey X contains a brand new version of TouchType’s flagship Fluency™ language inference engine, which is at the heart of the app’s ‘mind reading’ capability.

Improvements to Fluency include ‘Personal Input Modeling’, which dynamically alters the touch-sensitive regions of keys based on how accurate your typing is. There are also two new ‘typing styles’ – Precise and Rapid – which ensure predictions and corrections work in harmony with the way you type.

SwiftKey X contains many UI and customization improvements, including a totally redesigned installer and settings menu, and a theming framework that allows users to change the look of their keyboard.

The app also now supports 17 languages, and remains the leading keyboard on the market that uses AI to intelligently interpret text input in multiple languages simultaneously.

Most new Android phones now come pre-installed with the alternative keyboard Swype, but there is a large portion of users that have never tried it. Swype is not available for sale in the Android Market, so the only way to get it is through their beta program that is offered every couple of months.

Swype just sent us an email to inform us that they have opened registrations for their latest version that they need help beta testing. These open registrations are normally offered for a limited time, so head over to beta.swype.com and sign up before it’s too late. All you need to do is provide your email and then Swype will send you a link to download their installer.

If this is your first time to try Swype, check out the detailed installation instructions and FAQ if you need any help. If you are upgrading from a previous version of Swype, please make sure uninstall both Swype and Swypeinstaller.

It appears that Swype’s servers are still getting hammered from all the new users, so if you experience any problems please wait and try again. The important thing is to make sure you register so you can gain access to the Swypeinstaller file.

Check out the new version and let us know what you think. Is Swype your favorite alternative keyboard or do you rock the stock layout still?

Swype is pleased to offer an (updated) Android Beta! Here are the details:

In English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, German, and introducing French and an early, *UNSTABLE* preview release of Chinese Pinyin

Now includes support for Double-Tap-to-Edit, Cursor Restore, and Voice-to-Text (requires Google Voice Search be included in your system firmware)

HVGA, WVGA, and WVGA854 Resolutions – don’t worry we’ll detect this automatically. Sorry, no QVGA

Limited End User Support – mostly via our forum

If your phone came pre-installed with Swype DO NOT download this beta (it won’t work)

Angry Birds for those few that aren’t familiar is one of the top selling games for Apple’s iPhone and iPad and is about to wing its way onto the Android Market.

The basic premise (and it is going to sound odd) is that some malevolent pigs have stolen the eggs from a flock of (reasonably upset) birds who are now out to get their eggs back. Armed with a slingshot and a variety of birds that offer different attack styles you launch the birds at the pigs fortresses in an effort to knock them down and kill the pigs.

As bizarre as that sounds the gameplay is really addictive and the visuals in all of the versions that I have seen are absolutely fantastic so this is a real feather in Android’s cap (I swear that’s the last bird allusion).

If you want to get in on the beta the word from Rovio is that they are going to distribute it starting this Friday to anyone signed up for their mailing list which can be found at android.angrybirds.com.

Update: As a result of the huge response to the news of the upcoming beta release Rovio has decided to just release the Angry Birds Lite beta into the Market on Friday.

A few months back, we reported that Trillian was going to release an Android version of their popular instant messaging application. The nearly two month wait is now over, as Trillian has just announced the availability of its first public beta release.

As of the writing, I’ve spent just a few minutes with the Trillian Beta, and though there are some UI pieces I’m not too fond of, so far I’m fairly impressed with the application overall and how easy it was to get it all set up (even though I didn’t have an account prior to today).

Those interested in downloading the beta to test it out for yourself should click on this download link from your Android phone. To learn more about Trillian’s beta before installing, head over to the Cerulean Studios blog.

Trillian requires Android 1.6 or above, so a heavy majority of users should be able to use it. As always, if you decide to try Trillian out, please let us know what you think about it in the comments. Also, expect a full review later on after we’ve had some time to play around with Trillian.
