The Game

The Sonic 4 saga continues with Sonic’s beloved side kick, Miles “Tails” Power. Players can now experience the Sonic 4 saga as never before with the addition of a brand new engine; bringing you gameplay with updated physics and HD graphics.

Players with Tegra 3 devices like the HTC One X or ASUS Transformer Prime will enjoy higher quality textures, better lighting and glow effects, and objects on screen that are absent from other mobile versions.

Episode 2 also features a collaborative multiplayer mode where players can team up with a friend via Bluetooth and take control of Sonic and Tails as they battle against Dr. Eggman and Metal Sonic.

TegraZone game I’m looking forward to the most: Renaissance Blood THD

Renaissance Blood, formerly DaVinci, has been in development for a long time, but it should finally arrive on Tegra 3 devices in June. Korean developer Bridea is using the Unreal Engine 3 for this first person shooter and promises the highest graphics quality of any mobile game.

Kijong Kang, Executive Producer, described how they planned to take advantage of NVIDIA’s 4-PLUS-1 architecture by saying, “Renaissance Blood THD will leverage Tegra 3 for its multi-threading capabilities, so we can scale across all four CPU cores and deliver the ultimate console-quality performance.”

We haven’t seen a lot of info about the game released in recent months, so keep an eye on the TegraZone listing for updates. It’s possible the release date could be pushed back to the second half of 2012, but this looks like a game worth waiting on.

My favorite TegraZone Game

I’ve played so many Tegra games and enjoyed a lot of them so it’s hard to pick a favorite, but I think I got the most enjoyment out of Shadowgun. I originally scored the game 7/10 for being too short and lacking a multiplayer mode, but the developer recently released an expansion pack with more levels and the free online multiplayer game is coming soon. Early this week I got a message from NVIDIA asking me to review their next flagship game for TegraZone. I’m a huge gaming fan, so I jumped at the opportunity to check out their latest title. To my surprise, I got an early copy of Dark Meadow: The Pact from Phosphor Game Studio. Read on for the full details and a chance to win an ASUS Transformer Prime.

Mini Preview

I was asked to do a full review of Dark Meadow, but I’ve only had the game for 24 hours so consider this more of a preview. Having said that, Dark Meadow has started off as the best Android game I have ever played.

Dark Meadow begins when you wake up in an abandoned hospital. Very little details about the story are provided at the start, and the chronicle slowly unfolds as you begin to explore and pick up clues. I don’t want to give away the adventure, but you soon realize that you are trapped in a nightmare and you must escape the hospital to wake up.

Gameplay is a mix of exploring, mystery, and combat that features swipe gestures. Players are rewarded for closely examining every detail as they collect coins to upgrade their weapons and find clues that tell the story.

When a battle occurs, players start with a cross bow for long-range combat and switch to a sword as melee attacks as the enemy draws near. If you face an enemy and lose all your life, you awaken in the maternity ward of the hospital.

Check out the video above for a more detailed walkthrough of the game. As an experiment, I recorded my preview video using the Tegra 3-powered HTC One X, which is one of the devices that can play this game. For some reason the video abruptly cuts off, but I thought it was a good cliffhanger that would lead you to wanting more.

Overall, Dark Meadow has been a joy to play and I can’t find any faults with it yet. It has the potential to score a perfect review when I’m finished playing it. I joked in the video that Dark Meadow is like a good book that you don’t want to put down, and now I’m finding myself wanting to go play more after I get this post up.

Benefits of Tegra 3

Initially, Dark Meadow: The Pact for Android is exclusive to Tegra 3 devices. The game was previously released on iOS, but Phosphor Games has made a number of improvements for the Tegra version.

Dark Meadow Tegra 3 Enhancements include:

• Dynamic particles – All the scenes come alive, with rendering power to draw more particle systems.
• Dynamic foliage- Scenes have foliage that moves and sways
• Dynamic textures – Extra visual fidelity like animating environmental textures like puddles and drips.
• More detailed world – More polygons on screen

Today Qualcomm launched a new promotion called The One Charge Challenge, in order to highlight the energy efficiency of their Snapdragon processors. They released a cool video called Around the World on One Charge to show what they accomplished with a single charge and are now asking users to do the same, in order to win a new Snapdragon-powered smartphone or tablet.

Battery life continues to be one of the top concerns among our audience, so it’s nice to see Qualcomm focus on this important issue. We actually saw the battery life of Android devices decrease in 2011 with the introduction of new 4G LTE networks, but Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon S4 processor should help reverse that trend. It’s built on a more power efficient 28nm process technology and it’s the first system-on-a-chip to feature an integrated LTE modem.

If you hadn’t heard, today is a big day for tablets. No, I’m not talking about that other tablet. I’m talking about the fact that we’re giving away a pair of quad-core Transformer Primes. We’ve paired with @NVIDIATegra to make sure this is a Friday you’ll never forget.

To ensure we kept it big, these are the 32GB model AND they come with the matching keyboard dock. Taylor and I both run a Prime as our primary tablet. So if you don’t know how awesome of a prize this is, let me tell you: this is an awesome prize. As such, we’ve got a pretty kickass method for getting these bad boys into your hands.

How to win

Since we’ve got two Primes, we’ve also got two ways to win. The first is simple and just requires leaving a comment on this post. We’ll leave comments open for 24 hours, after which point we’ll select a random winner.

The second tablet? That’s where things get interesting. To give it out, we’ll be hosting a live game show tomorrow over on our Google+ page. To win, users will need to join us in a live Hangout on Air and play a game of chance. In addition to the Prime, we’ll have a whole slew of other prizes, including free tees, cases from @speckproducts and even a Powerbag.

To participate, you’ll need to circle +Android and Me on Google+, but you’ve probably done that already, right? Tomorrow afternoon we’ll make a post on our G+ page looking for contestants. If you’re in the right place at the right time, that could be you. The only requirement is a camera and microphone so you can join us in the Hangout.

Aside from giving away a fresh Prime, we’ll also use the Hangout to be announce the winner of today’s comment contest, so make sure you tune in even if you don’t want to join us live on air. Sprint announced they would carry the Galaxy Nexus earlier this year and customers have been eagerly waiting ever since. We know it’s coming in the first-half of 2012 and people can register for updates, but we have yet to hear about the official release date. Today Sprint shared two hints that suggest their Galaxy Nexus could arrive sooner than we think.

First Sprint started a new contest called the Data Storm Sweepstakes, where they are giving away 30 free Galaxy Nexus smartphones. Sprint is accepting entries to the contest through April 5, and then they will announce the winners on or about April 16. It doesn’t say when the prizes will be shipped out, but one could assume it might happen as soon as next month.

Next Sprint uploaded a new video to YouTube that demonstrates the benefits of the Galaxy Nexus and Google Wallet. Once again no release date is mentioned, but Sprint says they are reading their 4G LTE network and the device is coming soon.

Sprint’s 4G LTE network will only be available in a handful of cities when it launches in the coming months. Initial markets include Dallas, Atlanta, Houston and San Antonio and we recently learned that  Baltimore and Kansas City would be next on the list to get LTE by mid-2012. Sprint has already rolled out their first LTE cluster in Kankakee, Illinois late last year, so I think they can meet their goal of a small launch by next quarter.

The Galaxy Nexus is still expected to become Sprint’s first LTE smartphone, so we anticipate a simultaneous launch of the device and new network at the same time. It’s always possible that Sprint could start selling the Galaxy Nexus before LTE is widely available (similar to the EVO 4G and their early WiMAX network), so be on the lookout for a surprise announcement as early as next month.
