Verizon will deliver a new OTA update (build FRG22D) to the Motorola Droid starting tomorrow which will finally bring Flash Player 10.1 to the device, according to our friend Kellen over at Droid Life.

Unlike the recent HTC EVO update, Flash Player 10.1 will not be bundled with the 1.6 MB software update. Instead users will have to search the Android Market for “Flash Player 10.1″ and install it from there, similar to how the Nexus One received it.

If you absolutely can’t wait till tomorrow, there is a leaked version of the latest Flash 10.1 floating around that works with the Droid as long as you already have Android 2.2. It is the same version that’s available for the Nexus One (10.1.92.8) and those who installed it report it works, but I would suggest waiting another 24 hours and downloading it from the official Market.

Now that the Motorola Droid 2 has been officially announced, Adobe wants to make sure that everyone knows it will be the first phone to come with the completely redesigned Flash Player 10.1 out of the box.

Flash 10.1 is currently in beta (version 3) on the Android Market, but we were told a final version will be posted shortly. We have no confirmation on which version of Flash will ship on the Droid 2, but I’m going to assume the final version is ready and Motorola already has it.

Other devices with Android 2.2 should see Flash 10.1 in the following weeks. Adobe says that the HTC Incredible, the Samsung Galaxy S, Motorola Milestone, Droid X and others will support Flash Player 10.1 soon and they will keep us posted on updates.

Recent leaks suggest the original Droid will see Flash 10.1 in the Android Market on August 18th so keep an eye on that date for other devices as well.

Update: Adobe sent us a statement to clarify which version of Flash 10.1 is shipping on the Droid 2 and other devices.

“Adobe released Flash Player 10.1 in June to OEM and platform partners worldwide. This is the final release that partners like HTC and Verizon/Motorola are distributing to their customers. Examples are the HTC Evo, HTC Desire and the new DROID 2 by Motorola, which is the first smartphone that will come pre-installed with Flash Player 10.1. We expect additional Android devices and other mobile platforms to get Flash Player 10.1 over the next few weeks. The version of Flash Player 10.1 that is available on the Android Market for the Google Nexus One is a Beta 3. A final release will be posted shortly.”

The wait took a little longer than expected, but Adobe finally made good on their promise to bring Flash Player 10.1 to the Android platform. The first beta was released during Google I/O and it was a little sluggish at first, but Google and Adobe have worked closely together to improve performance.

Now that it appears we have the final version of Android 2.2, I wanted to take another look at the latest Flash 10.1 Beta 3 and show how it works. Anyone with a Nexus One running Android 2.2 can easily download the plugin from the Android Market and begin using it.

Since Flash 10.1 is still in beta, this is by no means a final review. As you can see from my video below, the loading times of some videos is slow (even over WiFi), but it’s hard to complain when other mobile platforms don’t even have access to Flash. I ran into difficulty playing some Flash games that required a keyboard, but thankfully Adobe setup the Flash Mobile Showcase which has a list of sites that are optimized for the mobile platform.

Flash is not something most users will use everyday, but it’s always nice to have it when you need it. There have been countless times in the past when I could not load a website and now that barrier is gone. I look forward to the final release and I can’t wait to see what developers create using this exciting new platform.

Adobe just announced the release of Flash Player 10.1 to their mobile platform partners, but which Android phones will be able to run it? In order to install Flash 10.1 from the Android Market your phone must be running Android 2.2 and have at least an ARM Cortex-A8 processor (sorry first-gen phones).

According to Adobe, devices supporting Android 2.2 “Froyo” and Flash Player 10.1 are expected to include the Motorla Droid, Motorola Milestone, Dell Streak, Google Nexus One, HTC EVO, HTC Incredible, HTC Desire, Samsung Galaxy S and others. Adobe did not include them in their list (because they have not been announced), but the Droid X and Droid 2 will also be able to support Flash 10.1.

I’ve been playing around with Flash 10.1 for almost a month and while I don’t use it that much, it is nice to have when you need it. Performance has increased with the latest Beta 3 and Android 2.2 firmware and we should see that continue to improve as hardware partners utilize GPU acceleration.

If you are one of the lucky few with a Nexus One, you can check out Flash Player 10.1 Beta 3 right now. All you need to do is install Android 2.2 then head to the Android Market and download Flash 10.1.

With both of their upcoming Droid devices leaking left and right for the last several weeks it was only a matter of time until we finally saw something official from Verizon or Motorola and here it is.

The invite above went out today notifying the press of an event in New York on June 23rd which will hopefully put to rest all rumor and speculation regarding both the Droid X and the Droid 2.

The invite doesn’t offer up any specifics regarding the handsets to be announced, but of note is the presence of Shantanu Narayen, CEO of Adobe, on the speakers list. This gives at the very least a glimmer of hope that Motorola has managed to get Flash 10.1 and thus Android 2.2 on one or both of the new Droids in time for launch.

Here’s hoping this also means the launch date for one or both of these devices is imminent, but we could still be in for a month of impatiently waiting for our shiny new toys even after this announcement.

Google is set to unveil Android 2.2 this week at Google I/O and Flash 10.1 will be one of the major features that gets highlighted. Adobe is already gearing up for the launch by highlighting a couple dozen sites that are optimized for the mobile platform. The guys at TechCrunch were able to locate the landing page that users will be directed to after installing the new Flash 10.1 beta.

The early focus appears to be on video and games, the two cornerstones of Flash. A slew of games will be provided by Kongregate, MiniClip, and South Park Studios while video will come from Sony Pictures and Warner Brothers. TV shows will be available from TBS, TNT, and BET. Other suggested sites include Google Finance, Wall Street Journal, Justin.tv, and many more.

For a complete list of showcase sites, see the Nexus One and the Droid landing pages. Droid owners should be happy because I think this confirms our predictions that their devices will be among the first to taste FroYo Android 2.2.

Featured Flash sites include:

Kongregate (mobile optimized)

Sony Pictures (mobile optimized)

Flash Player 10.1 for Android smartphones coming as a public preview at Google I/O.

Adobe CTO, Kevin Lynch, wrote a brief blog post on Adobe’s site yesterday as a response to Steve Job’s <del datetime="2010-04-30T13:36:40+00:00">load of</del> explanation for why they are not using Flash on their mobile devices.

The closing paragraph contains the nugget of information that we are interested in.

We look forward to delivering Flash Player 10.1 for Android smartphones as a public preview at Google I/O in May, and then a general release in June. Kevin Lynch Adobe CTO

So we finally have confirmation of our speculations regarding the big unveiling coming at Google I/O. Pairing this with Andy Rubin’s statements that support for Flash 10.1 comes in Froyo we can reasonably conclude that Froyo will debut alongside Flash at I/O and that the release of both will be coming to some Android users in June. Still up in the air is who those users will be and of course the exact date.

Now as we all know (and as they will proudly tell you) the N1 users are likely to be the first existing users to upgrade to it, with Droid Classic (Yes I just made that up) users possibly being in the mix there as well. But there has to be a launch device to go with it right? The Evo 4G seems like the obvious choice with a release date of June 6th or 13th and features which we already know stack up favorably with Cupertino’s latest, but everything released thus far has it pegged as an Android 2.1 device at launch.

So do you think Google is going to forgo a Flashy (pardon the pun) launch device this time, surprise us with the Evo 4G running Android 2.2 (which would be good news for you Incredible owners), or is there a stealth Android 2.2 device out there that we don’t know about yet?

There will be Android related announcements at Google I/O.

There will be Android related announcements coming in a couple weeks at Google I/O and all signs point to the public unveiling of Android 2.2 (Froyo). We already speculated that Android 2.2 was coming and predicted Flash 10.1 would drop at I/O and now it looks like May 20th is the date. Given that Flash 10.1 is tied to Froyo, this bodes well for a joint announcement.

On the second day of Google I/O, May 20th, there are several Android sessions scheduled for the afternoon that are listed as TBA. They likely have no topic because they are related to Android features that have not been publicly announced. Google did this at last year’s I/O when they revealed Google Wave on the second day and directly followed it up with a series of sessions.

If you follow our Googlers Twitter list you might have noticed several employees tweeting the sessions link and pointing out the TBAs. Recent Google addition Tim Bray (who now runs the Android Developrs Blog) even said, “I don’t think that I’m telling any secrets when I say that there will be Android-related announcements at that event.”

Many insiders believe the Nexus One will be the first to receive Android 2.2, but we could see a simultaneous release on the Motorola Droid. Google already shipped every paid attendee a free Android phone and they were giving out the Droid and N1. Adobe has also regularly used the Droid when taunting us with all those Flash demos.

I’ll even go out on a limb and predict some first gen devices might see an upgrade as well. A new version of the Market was pictured on a myTouch 3G with Android 2.2 and we have been told all first gen U.S. phones will eventually be upgraded. Actually, Google has stopped selling their ADP1 (HTC Dream) so maybe that device is on the way out.
