Google is set to lift the lid on its new music search system this afternoon.

Details are still incoming, but Google is launching their music search service today. I’m not yet sure how this will tie in with Android or if it will even work on our phones. When we have more information on all the features of Google Music and how it relates to Android, I will update this post. Om Malik has a write up on all the partners that are cooperating with Google on this new feature.

When the site goes live, you can access it from http://www.google.com/music/

Could this be the service to compete with iTunes?

Is there anything Google doesn’t have their hands in now? Yesterday we learned Google might offer their own unlocked Android phone in retail stores and today TechCrunch is reporting Google will launch a music service. Certain members of the press began receiving an invitation (pictured above) for a special announcement on October 28, 2009. The music service is a collaboration between iLike, LaLa, MySpace, and Google. It is being reported that users will be able to stream music and purchase songs when performing searches with Google.

There are no mentions of any specific connections to Android, but Google needs their own service to compete with Apple iTunes. Google just released their own podcast application, so why not offer a music store as well?

Does anyone else find it odd this music announcement will come the same day that Google, Motorola, and Verizon are expected to expose Android 2.0?
