Hexage releases Radiant Defense to Google Play Store

Millions of aliens will die in Hexage’s latest game Radiant Defense. Yesterday we revealed that Hexage had a new project in the works and today it hits the Google Play Store. Radiant Defense is free to play without any ads, but players who would like to delve deeper into the game can unlock packs of additional weapons for more tactical options using in-app purchases.

Radiant Defense was made to be a classic tower defense game at its core, but Hexage tells us it features a unique style and gameplay. The game is set to the universe of the 8-bit shooter Radiant, which is one of my all time favorite shooters on Android. There are over 300 waves of aliens across 10 missions, 9 upgradable weapons to kill the aliens with style, 3 superweapons of mass defense, and a signature soundtrack by Kubatko.

I’m not a huge fan of tower defense games, but I have no problem in recommending this title because everything that Hexage releases is awesome. Seriously, go check out all their previous titles in the Google Play Store.

Homerun Battle 3D is one of my all-time favorite games for Android and I’ve been waiting on the sequel for a long time. I can’t believe it slipped past us, but Homerun Battle 2 actually hit the Google Play Store a couple weeks ago. The game is free to play, features customizable characters, includes 6 different modes, and brings back the online battles that we loved. Go download it now.

Max Payne Mobile comes to Android on April 26th

I’ve been looking forward to the remake of Max Payne on Android for a long time, so I was happy to see Rockstar Games announce it would be available in the Google Play Store on April 26th. ”The full classic Max Payne PC experience, Max Payne Mobile has been optimized for both iOS and Android devices and features HD graphics, high-resolution textures, Social Club connectivity and user-customizable controls,” Rockstar said in a statement. The iOS version went on sale today for $2.99, so we expect similar pricing when it comes to Android.

Spacetime Studios releases Dark Legends

From the developer that brought you Pocket Legends and Spacetime Legends, comes a new MMORPG called Dark Legends. The latest release from Spacetime Studios lets you rise as part of the Vampire Nation and fight to survive against a world that has turned against you. If you don’t have an Android device, you can also play Dark Legends in the free Chrome Browser version.

EA releases POGO Games to Google Play Store

If you love free casual games, then you might want to check out POGO Games from EA Mobile. This free title feature 4 different games including Poppit!, Word Whomp, Turbo21, and Sweet Tooth 2. Members of POGO.com can also access a 5th game called World Class Solitaire. I’m not a huge fan of these types of games, but those that have installed it gave it an average rating of 4.3.

Hexage previews their next game Radiant Defense

I normally don’t get excited over another tower defense game, but Hexage has always been one of my favorite developers. This week they previewed their next title called Radiant Defense, which features over 300 waves of aliens across 10 unique locations. PocketGamer reports that Radiant Defense will be free to play later this month, and players will be able to download packs of additional weapons through in-app purchases. While you wait on this game, be sure to check out some of Hexage’s previous titles including Robotek, Radiant, and EVAC.

Discover hidden treasures with American Pickers

If you are a fan of the Discovery Channels hit show American Pickers, then check out this free game that just debuted last week. The game follows Frank and Mike as they travel across 12 states and 24 unique locations searching for buried treasure. Buyers should beware because the free game only includes 3 maps before players are asked to spend money on additional levels. Some have complained about problems downloading the additional map packs, so you might want to just preview the free levels before handing over any money.

AirMech enters alpha testing, coming to Android this summer

Carbon Games has been testing their new RTS-action game AirMech for PC, but JoyStiq reports an Android version is coming this summer. Check out the teaser video above to get a feel for this hybrid game, or just install the Chrome version and try it for yourself.

“The best & the original” Tower Defense from Com2uS

There are thousands of tower defense style games on Android, but Com2uS claims they have the original and the best. Their take on the popular genre features 40 campaigns, 7 challenge maps, 4 different game play modes, 9 towers, 10 enemy units, 4 special weapons, and 5 different world themes. Tower Defesne: Lost Earth is free to play, so go grab the game and see if that claim is true.

Jett Tailfin Racers comes to Tegra Zone

This week Ilusis Interactive Graphics released their first Android game called Jeff Tailfin Racers. This game is an exclusive to NVIDIA’s Tegra Zone and features enhanced effects for Tegra-powered devices such as motion-blur, high-resolution textures and up to full 1080p HD graphics rendering. I played an early beta of the game and it reminded me of Mario Kart under water, but the controls were not very responsive and the powerups were confusing. The game is currently available for $2.99, so you might want to wait on some more reviews to appear before you dive in.

Sega reveals special ”Episode Metal” level for Sonic 4

We have already covered that Sega will be releasing Sonic 4 Episode II this summer, but this week they tweeted that players who have Episodes I and II installed on the same device will gain access to a new level called “Episode Metal.” Look for Sonic 4 Episode II to be available for Tegra-powered devices in May, followed by a wider release to more devices in June.

Gamevil releases latest free RGP, Advena

Gamevil publishes some of the most popular RPGs on Android, so we expect their latest release to do quite well. Advena is a free to play game that offers Party Play Action RPG. The game lets you choose 5 unique heroes that are all simultaneous playable and offers an extensive world map that features 200 different stages. It doesn’t appear the game offers HD graphics like Zenonia 4, but it’s still free and the early reviews are good.

Take the hot-seat with Football Manager Handheld 2012

I don’t like soccer, but I know we have a ton of global readers that do so I thought we should share Football Manager Handheld 2012. This game from SEGA allows players to take over any club from a choice of leagues in 12 countries, and assume full control of transfers, training, tactics and managing your team live during matchdays. Early reviews say the game is highly polished and it currently maintains an average review score of 4.5.

Games I’m currently playing

Helium Boy: Bertil Hörberg is a one-man game studio that deserves to be recognized. Helium Boy is one of the best platformer games I have played on Android, and it’s a shame that awesome titles like this fall under the radar. This game features a boy and his balloons, who are being chased by ninjas. Grab the free demo below that includes the first stage, then buy the paid version to explore the rest of the game.

Gunman Clive: I mentioned Gunman Clive last week and I went ahead and purchased it. It actually lived up to the funny trailer and it was totally worth the $1.99 asking price. I was out of town this week on vacation, so I’m still playing it to try and finish the 8 levels.

EVAC is Pac-Man for the smartphone generation. This unique arcade game from our friends at Hexage takes the tried-and-true eat the dots gameplay of Pac-Mac, but then throws in some Zelda-like puzzles, Metal Gear Solid style stealth, and a little bit of Tron neon.

I know that might sound confusing, but the game actually starts off really easy and then walks you through the different booby-traps and power-ups. The game encourages replay with its ever-growing total score and multiple ways how to beat each level.

Hexage is quickly becoming one of our favorite Android game developers because they always deliver the goods. Their first two games (Buka and Totemo) are some of the most polished titles available for the Android platform. Not only do they produce quality games, but they also provide great support. Hexage continues to update their games after they are released to add new gameplay features and extend the replay value.

For their third game, Hexage decided to go retro.

Radiant is an old school shooter that plays tribute to classics like Space Invaders and Asteroids. The controls are ultra simple and the game is all about action. Hexage plans to release the game next Thursday October, 1 2009, but they gave us an exclusive demo to share with our readers.

Storm your brain with Totemo

It is no secret that Android is seriously lacking in the games department. A quick look at the best selling titles for last month reveals a list filled with emulators. There are however a few developers that have risen to the top. Hexage is one of the few teams that has been able to push the current Android hardware and produce some exceptional work.

The first title we saw from Hexage was Buka. I took a liking to this game because it took advantage of touch and motion controls, was easy to pick up and learn, and beautiful to look at. The game continued to improve even after it was released with several updates from Hexage. They listened to feedback from the community and implemented new features to extend the replay value. Buka continues to remain in the best selling games list three months after its release.

Fans of Android games are in for a treat because Hexage now has three new titles in development. This past weekend I got a chance to preview their next release. Totemo is puzzle game designed to train the brain and relax the mind at the same time. The game is a complete departure from the fast paced Buka, but has the same quirky characters and polished feel.

I’m not going to reveal too much of the gameplay, because this is a sneak peek and I want you to play the game when it comes out. Normally I’m not a fan of puzzle games, but I’ve had a lot of fun with Totemo so far. Challenges start off easy enough that any casual gamer can pick up and play. The difficulty gradually increases and there are over 60 levels to complete in the story mode. Once you master the game, you can move onto survival mode and compete for the highest score on the online leaderboard.

Follow Buka To Your Happy Place

We recently began publishing weekly Top 10 Paid Android Games lists in order to highlight the quality titles you can purchase from the Market. I hope to eventually review each and every game, but I have asked our readers to help out by submitting their own reviews. If you would like to contribute a review for any games on the Top 10, we will gladly accept it.

My girlfriend found Buka on my Android some while ago and she can’t let go of it even now. That’s how cute it is. Buka is a blue sphere helplessly floating in the space, searching for her happy place. Every blasted asteroid on screen desperately tries to collide with her. Your job is to protect her and see to it she safely makes it to her happy destination.

When you touch the screen, there appears a bright spark that you can smoothly move over the screen. The longer you keep your finger on it, the bigger explosion it delivers upon release. But it’s not the only action you can take. You can also tap the screen to create a sonar blast which pushes things around. This is especially useful to change trajectory of fast enemies to avoid collision with them.

Use shockwaves to deflect enemies like Mr. Sleepy.

There are many different kinds of enemies. I especially enjoyed the sleeping moons, who wake up and attack if an explosion happens too close to them. The majority of enemies burst into fragments, so taking down too many asteroids at once can render the screen inhabitable. Different projectiles are the green pieces which come packing some health and a score bonus. These you need to push closer and collect, which may sound easy. But when you have to decide between three asteroids to blast, one moon to push away, green piece to collect and a sun to avoid, you are in deep space trouble.

The game seems very easy at the beginning, but it gets harder and harder with every level. Higher levels may seem undoable at first glance. You are attacked by masses of asteroids and you have to eel among huge indestructible suns, but there is always a way to beat it. It’s about precision firing and avoiding enemies at the same time. This game requires a strategy however – in some situations it’s best to move Buka around and risk collecting pieces, another time the best approach may be to obliterate anything that moves in a single tapping frenzy.

Thumbs up for Buka! It is so adorable you want to try every level over and over again, just to see that little fella happy. The graphics are great, the game is well designed and I never experienced any issue. It just works perfectly. Last but not least, I liked the sounds and music a lot. Although I usually turn down the volume the second I start the game, here I enjoy Buka’s voice and exceptional atmospheric tunes.

A second opinion by Taylor Wimberly

Buka is the best designed Android game available on the Market. Hexage has done a great job of combining touch and tilt controls. I experienced some issues with the tilt controls in Android 1.5, but after reporting this to the developer they quickly released an update.

With the new patch, Buka has quickly become one of my favorite mobile games. Each level is short enough that you can play on the go for a few minutes and then save your progress. There is a high difficulty level but with repeated play you will learn advanced strategies making play easier. I died a lot during my first time with the game and now I’m almost half way through the game without losing a life.

I wipe my phone a lot, so I have yet to finish the game. Once I play through the final level and beat the game, I will post a more in depth review. If you are looking for a great Android game, please take a look at Buka. A demo version is available, but I suggest purchasing the full version to show the developer we will support great games.
