DivX playback comes to Android thanks to LG

DoubleTwist is a great tool to convert movies to play on my phone, but I still wished Android supported more video formats. LG is teaming up with DivX to make that happen with their first Android phone. Canadian carrier Rogers recently launched the LG Eve (GW620) which is the first phone to support the popular DivX format.

DivX technology produces highly compressed video that requires minimal storage for the highest quality media experience on a mobile platform. In fact, a standard definition movie can be compressed into just 1GB using DivX technology; a size that can easily be stored on a mobile phone for viewing anytime, anywhere.

The LG Eve is available in Canada and Europe, but there are no plans to bring the device to the United States. We have heard rumors LG is working on a new Android phone for a U.S. carrier, but details have yet to emerge. Hopefully, we will see the DivX codec appear on more Android devices in 2010.

Our buddies Android-France have posted some new details on LG’s upcoming Android phone named Eve (GW620). We still don’t have the full specs, but Eve is expected to be a low end Android phone. It appears LG is about to launch a new ad campaign in European markets and has already produced several weird ad spots.

As we said in our last rumor report, the LG Eve is not expected to be available in the United States. However, according to a tip sent to Phandroid the LG Eve will be available in Canada on Rogers Wireless for $49.

Rogers lands another Android phone.

Look to 2010 for LG to announce their first Android phone for on a United States carrier. In the mean time, you can enjoy these photos of Eve.

LG has decided to join the ranks of some companies like HTC, Samsung and Motorola by announcing that they too will release an Android device. The LG GW-620 will have a 3 inch touchscreen and a full qwerty keyboard. More info will be announced later when the phone is due to release in the fourth quarter of this year in select European markets.
