Just as the two-year anniversary celebration for the original Motorola Droid ends, internal Verizon documents have surfaced online that put the Droid 4 on track for a December release.

Uncovered by Droid Life, the Motorola Droid 4 has been spotted in several different Verizon systems that, in the past, have indicated an imminent release. The time between when the Xoom 2 appeared in the same documents and when the device was scheduled to be released was a little over a month. If everything goes according to plan, the Droid 4 could launch as soon as the second week of December. Lending some credibility to this theory are the “in the wild” shots of the Droid 4 that show the device looking mighty close to finished.

Around two weeks ago, pictures of the Droid 4 found their way online. Judging by those pictures, the Droid 4 will have an improved physical keyboard over previous models, with a body similar to the Droid RAZR. As far as rumored specs go, we’re looking at a 1.2 GHz OMAP4430 processor, 4-inch Super AMOLED display, 4G LTE, Android 2.3.5 (at launch), 8 megapixel camera with 1080p video capture, front-facing camera and HDMI out.

Between the RAZR, Droid 4, Galaxy Nexus and HTC Rezound, Verizon is going to have one killer lineup by the end of the year.

The Motorola Droid Bionic has been hiding since we last received word that it would be delayed and improved. This device will be the first dual-core, 4G LTE device on Verizon’s network, and many of you are very excited to see it coming. Though we know improvements are being added to this device, details about these upgrades have been well hidden. Today, the Droid Bionic has peeked its head out of its cave again – Benchmarks of the Bionic have shown up at NenaMark, revealing some interesting specs.

If this report stands true until the release of the Droid Bionic, it would mean that Motorola is not making minor changes to this device. Though the Bionic was expected to ship with a Tegra 2 processor, this report shows that it will carry a PowerVR SGX 540 GPU, which only comes with the new Texas Instruments OMAP 4 processors. It seems almost impossible that Motorola would go as far as changing something as important as the processor. Past reports show that the Droid 3 will also have an OMAP 4 processor, so Motorola may be turning to Texas Instruments from now on. We will simply have to wait and see. As the NenaMark reports, the dual-core processor would be clocked at 1 GHz.

Other details include the fact that the device now has Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread, which is good, since it was supposed to ship with Android 2.2 Froyo. Considering the fact that the device was delayed until the summer, it only seems fair that Motorola would ship the Bionic with Gingerbread. The NenaMark results also show that the device has a qHD display (960×540), which we were actually expecting, so it seems like there will be no changes to the display.

Compared to the Motorola Droid 3 NenaMark benchmarks, the Bionic doesn’t seem to be performing very well. Both devices have the same processor, and overall similar specs, but the Droid 3′s score is of 45.70, almost twice the score of the Droid Bionic (at 24.00). Let’s just hope that it was a test error, and the Bionic delivers the performance we are all expecting.

For now, let’s just wait more (even though Motorola said this device would be the “end of waiting”) and keep our eyes open for more details. What do you guys say? Are you still hoping to make this your next smartphone? Do you guys like the idea of it having a Texas Instruments OMAP 4 processor, or would you rather it be a Tegra 2?

Physical keyboard lovers are probably very excited about getting some dual-core love from the Motorola Droid 3. As we have previously reported, the next successor to one of Android’s most famous devices (Motorola Droid) is probably coming by Q3 2011, and the other Droid successors are already starting to show up, beginning with the HTC Droid Incredible 2. Rumored specs included a 1 GHz dual-core OMAP 4 Texas Instruments processor, a 4-inch qHD display, rear and front-facing cameras, as well as the typical slide-out keyboard that this family tree features.

Further clarifying some of the rumors (along with some new info), the Motorola Droid 3 has shown up on Nenamark (a benchmarking website). Due to the fact that said website reports a PowerVR SGX 540 GPU hidden inside the Droid 3′s guts, it can be said that the device will, in fact, carry an OMAP 4 processor, since this GPU is featured by Texas Instruments’ new hardware, and not NVIDIA’s. The processor will be clocked at 1 GHz, as expected, but do remember that it still is a dual-core processor, which should improve its performance.

Other specs given by Nenamark include the fact that the device has a qHD display (960×540 resolution), and that it will be featuring Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Though we already expect 3rd quarter devices to come with Android 2.3, this is something that we do not have solid details on. It is definitely good to see that it will most likely feature more than Froyo.

Let’s hope that this information proves to be real (unless the specs end up being better), and keep your ears open for more details. It is also unknown if the device will be 4G LTE capable, but for now all we can do is sit back and wait for more details to come.

Personally, I love physical keyboards, and I know that many of you may feel the same way. If that is the case, the Droid 3 would probably be a great choice for Big Red customers this year (Also check out the HTC Merge and its beautiful slide-out keyboard). What do you guys think? Digging it? Waiting for the next Motorola Droid to come out? Check out the benchmark info below, and don’t forget to share your comments with us.

The first dual-core Android phone has finally hit the market and more are on the way. NVIDIA promised big performance gains with their Tegra 2 system-on-a-chip (SoC), so we put two of their superphones through a series of benchmarks to see how they stacked up. Check out the results after the jump and then download the benchmarks to see how your Android phone compares.

The test lineup

We have a lot of phones laying around the A&M Labs, but we just went with six models for this round of testing. Devices we tested include both the Tegra 2 phones that are currently available (Atrix 4G and Optimus 2X), both phones with Android 2.3 (Nexus S and Nexus One), the T-Mobile G2, and the popular Motorola Droid.

Each device was given a clean reboot before testing and they are all running unmodified, stock versions of Android. An active WiFi connection was turned on to simulate real-world experience.

Neocore

About: Neocore is an OpenGL-ES 1.1 graphics performance benchmark for Android devices. It shows off some of the techniques that are possible on accelerated platforms such as 1-pass light maps and bump mapping. [Download]

Neocore is one of the oldest GPU benchmarks and measures OpenGL ES 1.1 performance. The LG Optimus 2X easily came out on top with a score of 77.2 frames per second. The Motorola Atrix 4G fell behind in this test because it has the highest resolution (960 x540), which means it has to process the most pixels and do more work.

Nenamark1

About: Set your GPU on fire with NenaMark, an OpenGL ES 2.0 benchmark! NenaMark is a benchmark/demo of OpenGL ES 2.0, using programmable shaders for graphical effects such as reflections, dynamic shadows, parametric surfaces, particles and different light models to push the GPU to its limits. [Download]

Nenamark1 is another popular benchmark that has been around awhile which measures OpenGL ES 2.0 performance. The Optimus 2X once again smokes the competition and is followed by the Nexus S.

Smartbench 2011

About: Smartbench 2011 is a multi-core friendly benchmark application that measures the overall performance of your smartphone. It reports both Productivity and Games Index to suit both productivity users and 3D gaming users. [Download]

Smartbench 2011 is a new benchmark that has been updated to be multi-core friendly. Note that the Tegra 2 offers about 3x the productivity performance over all the single core phones. In the games score, the Optimus 2X is once again the leader.

GLBenchmark 2.0.3

About: GLBenchmark 2.0 has been designed from the ground up to demonstrate and measure the true potential of OpenGL ES 2.0 Hardware. The built-in shader code (GLSL) generator enables real-time performance tuning and de-compositing. This is an in-valuable feature for OpenGL ES 2.0 Hardware vendors and Handset manufacturers. [Download]

No surprises here. The Optimus 2X leads the competition when it comes to GPU performance. The Nexus S is able to once again eclipse the Atrix 4G thanks to its lower display resolution.

Linpack

About: Speed test your Android device and ROM with this standard CPU benchmark. Check the speed of your Android device and compare it to other Android devices. Results in millions of floating point operations per second (MFLOPS). Save results or post to the website to beat the best times. [Download]

In Linpack we see no performance advantages for the Tegra 2 devices. This test does not appear to be multi-threaded and all the 1 GHz cores perform about the same. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips generally perform well in this test thanks to their FPU (SIMD/NEON/VFP) instructions. The real world performance between a G2 and Nexus S is pretty similar, so I’m not sure how relevant this test really is.

Sunspider Javascript 0.9.1

About: This benchmark tests the core JavaScript language only, not the DOM or other browser APIs. It is designed to compare different versions of the same browser, and different browsers to each other. This test mostly avoids microbenchmarks, and tries to focus on the kinds of actual problems developers solve with JavaScript today, and the problems they may want to tackle in the future as the language gets faster. This includes tests to generate a tagcloud from JSON input, a 3D raytracer, cryptography tests, code decompression, and many more examples. [Download]

Both the Tegra 2 devices lead the pack in Javascript performance.

Conclusions

Benchmarks are not the end-all, be-all of real-world performance, but they can help us measure how different platforms stack up. It is really hard to provide an apples-to-apples comparison of the GPU performance since there are so many different display resolutions, but we can see that the GeForce GPU inside the Tegra 2 offers the fastest performance for what’s currently available on the market.

In the couple of weeks that I have spent with both Tegra 2 phones, I can say they generally feel much faster than the single-core competition. Not many apps are optimized to take full advantage of multi-core processors, but there is definitely a noticeable difference in the overall responsiveness of Tegra 2 devices when multiple apps are running.

Even though the LG Optimus 2X has half the RAM of the Atrix 4G, it easily out-performs the competition in GPU benchmarks thanks to its lower resolution. The qHD resolution of the Atrix 4G is a nice spec to have, but there is a performance hit in most games since the GPU has to do more.

We can clearly see the performance gains of Tegra 2 in benchmarks that are multi-threaded like Smartbench 2011. This should be a good indication of what Tegra users can expect in the future as the Android OS and applications are optimized to take full advantage of dual-core processors.

For everyday use, the Nexus S can still hold its own against newer dual-core phones. I expect the Nexus S will continue to be competitive for the rest of 2011 thanks to it always having the latest version of Android. Look for Tegra 2 (and other dual-core CPUs) to take the lead in the second half of this year as the software catches up to the hardware.

The title says it all. I get the feeling some of you are tired of these Twitter contests, but how can you turn down a free Droid phone from Verizon? The carrier is bringing back their @droidlanding account we saw them use during the Droid X launch, and this time all you have to do is tweet a reason you want a Droid to win one of the seven phones Verizon is giving away.

You can find the full rules on the official site, but here are the basics:

There are four entry periods before the end of the year and the first one ends tomorrow.

12:00:01 am ET on 12/1/10 through 11:59:59 pm ET on 12/9/10

12:00:00 am ET on 12/24/10 through 11:59:59 pm ET on 12/28/10

Sponsor selected judges will then choose the best tweets based on the following criteria:

50% – feature or use that makes Droid desirable

50% – creativity of written entry

As we count down the weeks till Gingerbread is released the majority of our audience has a phone with Android 2.1 or older and some of those devices will never see a software update again. Many Android handsets have the necessary hardware to run the latest version of Google’s mobile OS (example: myTouch 3G with Android 2.2), but several carriers have decided not to upgrade them in order to provide “the best combined hardware and software experience”.

So what exactly decides which phones get updated? Looking at the Top 20 Android devices report from analytics company Chitika it appears that the phones which sold the most units were among the first to get updated. Check out the best selling phones after the jump.

Top 10 Android devices by traffic from Chitika:

Motorola Droid: Android 2.2, Verizon

HTC EVO 4G: Android 2.2, Sprint

Motorola Droid X: Android 2.2, Verizon

HTC Incredible: Android 2.2, Verizon

Samsung Vibrant: Android 2.1, T-Mobile

Motorola Droid 2: Android 2.2, Verizon

LG Ally: Android 2.1, Verizon

HTC myTouch 3G: Android 2.2, T-Mobile

HTC Droid Eris: Android 2.1, Verizon

HTC Hero: Android 2.1, Sprint

They don’t say what period of time this data was sampled, but Chitika serves “over 3 billion monthly impressions across more than 100,000 websites“. Based on our analytics data and Google’s own Platform Versions report it seems pretty accurate.

Four of the top five phones have been updated to Android 2.2. Samsung is updating the Vibrant and LG is updating the Ally, so pretty soon that will mean 8 out of the top 10 Android phones will be on Android 2.2.

The software support you receive on your phone has little to do with the hardware specs or the manufacturer. We have 1 GHz phones in the U.S. that are still on Android 1.6 (Dell Streak, Sony Ericsson X10) and every handset maker has phones they left behind because they didn’t sell well (Backflip, Garminphone, Aero, Cliq XT, etc).

However there is one exception to the rule and that is the Nexus One, which was made by HTC and supported by Google. It was the first device with Android 2.2, which was easily available after Google announced the update in May at Google I/O.

We should also point out that AT&T does not have a single phone in the top 20 and they are not selling any phones with Android 2.2.

So if you want to own a phone that is highly likely to receive software updates just:

Buy the most popular phone for your carrier

Avoid AT&T

Get the Nexus S

Many Android users have been experiencing some frustrating times as they wait for their carrier to provide an official software update, but it looks like the overall situation is starting to improve.

Samsung might extended the wait a little longer for some, but HTC and Motorola have demonstrated they can deliver updates in a timely manner when the carriers really push them. Sprint and HTC rolled out Android 2.2 in July (just two months after it was available) and then Verizon and Motorola announced their update for the Droid on the following day. It took T-Mobile a little longer to send Android 2.2 to the myTouch 3G in October, but at least they came through on their pledge to keep it updated.

We can often predict when phones are going to perform well (Verizon’s dual-core Droid 4G will be HUGE), but the average consumer walking into their wireless carrier has no clue what version of Android any of the phones run or if they will ever be updated.

So next time your friend ask you what smartphone to buy, just point them towards one with the latest version of Android or tell them about the Nexus S instead.

Motorola announced the Droid would be receiving a new update (FRG22D) this week that would finally allow users to install Flash Player 10.1, but many phones have yet to receive the file. If you are tired of waiting and want to grab the update right now, then follow the simple steps below.

This update is intended for Droid owners who already received Android 2.2 (build FRG01B) and are waiting for the second update (FRG22D) to enable Flash Player 10.1. The firmware file comes directly from Google and it is the same version as what your phone would download over the air. I manually updated my Droid to make sure everything worked and the entire process takes about 10 minutes.

To manually install Android 2.2 FRG22D on the Verizon Droid, perform the following steps:

Download the official Android 2.2 firmware from Google: FRG22D-from-FRG01B

Copy the file to the root directory your microSD card and name it update.zip (newb warning: not update.zip.zip)

Power off your phone. Hold down the “X” button on the physical keyboard and power it back on to boot into recovery mode.

When you see the “/!\” symbol, press volume up and the camera button at the same time to display the recovery options.

Use the d-pad to navigate to “apply sdcard:update.zip” and select it.

When you see “Install from sdcard complete”, select “reboot system now”.

Open Android Market and search for “Flash Player 10.1″.

If you got a Droid, let us know how the update went and give us your impressions of the new Flash Player 10.1.

Verizon will deliver a new OTA update (build FRG22D) to the Motorola Droid starting tomorrow which will finally bring Flash Player 10.1 to the device, according to our friend Kellen over at Droid Life.

Unlike the recent HTC EVO update, Flash Player 10.1 will not be bundled with the 1.6 MB software update. Instead users will have to search the Android Market for “Flash Player 10.1″ and install it from there, similar to how the Nexus One received it.

If you absolutely can’t wait till tomorrow, there is a leaked version of the latest Flash 10.1 floating around that works with the Droid as long as you already have Android 2.2. It is the same version that’s available for the Nexus One (10.1.92.8) and those who installed it report it works, but I would suggest waiting another 24 hours and downloading it from the official Market.

Does anyone still need proof that the Android OS is becoming the most popular smartphone platform of choice? NPD’s latest report shows Android secured the number one spot in the U.S. for Q2 as the most popular smartphone OS purchased by consumers.

The Android OS accounted for 33% of the overall smartphone purchases in Q2 while Blackberry fell to 28% and Apple moved up a little to 22%. The fact that Android captured the number one stop is not surprising since the monthly numbers from AdMob have show that Android adoption has been outperforming the competition for over six months.

While Apple may be a little frustrated with NPD’s numbers, we’re pretty sure that RIM is simply dumbfounded. RIM and their Blackberry handsets have held the number one position in the smartphone category since late 2007. We’re pretty confident that Android will be staying at the top of NPD’s charts for quite some time.

Top selling Android phones in Q2

Motorola Droid

HTC Droid Incredible

HTC EVO 4G

HTC Hero

HTC Droid Eris

Show Press Release

The NPD Group: Motorola, HTC drive Android to Smartphone OS lead in the U.S.

Android now installed in one of every three smartphones sold at retail. BlackBerry OS share drops 9 points to 28 percent.

PORT WASHINGTON, NEW YORK, August 4, 2010 – Riding the wave of new handset introductions and wide carrier distribution in the second quarter (Q2), the Android smartphone operating system (OS) continued its upward climb in the U.S. consumer mobile phone market, according to The NPD Group, a leading market research company. For the first time since the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2007, RIM fell to second position, as Android took the lead among operating systems in handsets sold to U.S. consumers. NPD’s latest wireless market research reveals that Android accounted for 33 percent of all smartphones purchased in Q2, ahead of RIM (28 percent) and Apple (22 percent).

“For the second consecutive quarter, Android handsets have shown strong but slowing sell-through market share gains among U.S. consumers,” said Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD. “While the Google-developed OS took market share from RIM, Apple’s iOS saw a small gain this quarter on the strength of the iPhone 4 launch.”

Based on U.S. consumer purchases of mobile phones in Q2, the top 5 Android smartphones were as follows:

Motorola Droid
HTC Droid Incredible
HTC EVO 4G
HTC Hero
HTC Droid Eris

“Blackberry 6 will soon offer features that have been popular in recently launched Android handsets, such as support for capacitive touchscreens and a WebKit-based browser. However, the Blackberry Torch lacks the large screen allure that has characterized the best selling Android devices at its price point, including the Droid Incredible and EVO 4G,” Rubin said.

Model selection and promotions continue to play a role in the race for carrier dominance. According to NPD’s Mobile Phone Track, Verizon Wireless has maintained its lead among top carriers for the last three quarters comprising a third (33 percent) of the units sold in the U.S. mobile phone market in Q2, followed by AT&T (25 percent), Sprint (12 percent), and T-Mobile (11 percent). In Q2 Verizon Wireless continued their buy-one-get-one (BOGO) offers on all smartphones, including both RIM and Android models.

In spite of an overall decline in the number of mobile phones purchased year over year, the ongoing popularity of both messaging phones and smartphones, which are generally more costly than standard feature phones, resulted in slightly higher prices for all mobile phones in Q2. The average selling price for all mobile phones reached $90, which is a 3 percent increase since Q2 last year. Smartphone unit prices, by comparison, averaged $143 in Q2 2010, which is a 9 percent decrease over the previous year.

Data Note: The information in this press release is from Mobile Phone Track – NPD’s consumer tracking of U.S. consumers, aged 18 and older, who reported purchasing a mobile phone. NPD does not track corporate/enterprise mobile phone purchases.
